Chenda Melam is a traditional percussion performance in Kerala, India that uses the chenda, a cylindrical wooden drum. The chenda is a significant part of Kerala's cultural heritage and has been used for over 300 years in festivals, art forms, and event management
Festivals: Chenda Melam is an essential part of Kerala festivals, such as Onam
Art forms: The chenda is used in many Kerala art forms, including Kathakali, Kodiyattam, and Theyyam. The chenda's high-pitched sound is often associated with demonic traits, but it can also produce low tones for softer songs
Event management: Chenda Melam is often used to create a festive atmosphere for weddings, religious events, and other special occasions
The chenda is about two feet long and one foot in diameter, and is suspended from the drummer's neck so it hangs vertically. Both ends of the drum are covered with animal skin, usually a cow's hide, and are called the "Chenda vattam". The body of the chenda is made from the soft wood of the jackfruit tree, and the thickness is reduced at certain points to create a resonating sound. When the sound quality declines, the wooden rings with the skin are replaced
