"GPs Need To Work Full Weeks!" | Julia Hartley-Brewer Reforming The NHS

  • Talk's Julia Hartley-Brewer gives her take on how the NHS should be reformed, as a major report on the health service is published.
The NHS must reform or die, Sir Keir Starmer will say, as a major report on the health service is published.
The Prime Minister will set out his plans for tackling long waiting lists, improving the nation’s health and shifting the focus towards community services after a damning report from Lord Darzi found the NHS is “in serious trouble”.
Julia says: "If you want to be a GP you need to work a full week. If you want a part-time job, you need to go into another career!”

The NHS needs to be run like a business not a department of state. The number of managers, including diversity and clinical managers, are huge and there are so many non-jobs, employing people doing work that offers no benefit to either the NHS or the patients using the services. That is where the reform needs to start

The NHS needs dismantling. It wasn't fit for purpose 40 years ago and it's certainly not now with double the population. Working practices from 40 years ago also need to go down the pan. 43rd in the queue yesterday and still didn't get to see a GP - too busy with 'paperwork.' In other words, at home in his pants writing sicknotes for £25 a pop.

The NHS which was oddly the centerpiece of an Olympics opening is s perfect example of another government failure. Why do people look to government for answers?

Because they take our taxes to pay for it. While they can rarely find answers, ultimately spending is their responsibility. If not dissolve parliament give us our money back and let us get on with it.

Julia. My GP was sitting on my X-rays for 2-3 weeks. I was sent to the hospital for a check-up of my chest. They told me the GP would get in touch with me about the result. Never happened. I was having my blood checked as I am diabetic. I asked a receptionist. They said the P dealing with my case was only working 2 days a week. I demanded that at GP tell me what had been found. A different GP phoned me at home and sent me for an
urgent CT Scan for a lung cancer check. Now waiting for the hospital. What a state of affairs we are in.

yes GPs tend to work in more than surgery within a single practice. my GP works 10 hours for 2 days in my local surgery and 10 hours for 2 days in two other surgerys. JHB here wants to cut that time down to just 40 hours for a full week, what would you do then?

We should stop doing cosmetic procedures on the NHS. Every year the NHS are doing gastric bands, breast augmentation etc. They wont do cosmetic work in NHS dentists why do it in hospitals. You can lose weight through diet and excercise. It would be much cheaper to give those people a meal plan and a free gym membership. The problem is we dont see that health is the answer to a lot of the medical issues in society. In medicine we are just supressing symptoms instead of dealing with the root causes same as the prisons and everything else.

For my sins I lived in Harringay when poll tax came out and was paying £570 a year (the highest in the country) whereas in Westminster they were paying £40 per year. Clearly incredibly unfair. If they made everyone in the country pay £100 a year that would have been fair. Just how Denmark does it in fact. They don't have a tax paid directly to the local government, they pay it to the national government. Then the national government gives each region a payment for local services per head of population in that region.
