9:30 the texture here is so different to the orchestral version with the string legato almost verging on glissando, the orch version has a much more 'slithering' quality that is hard to describe. The orchestral third movement is spectacular though.
Hoyeon Jung, Squid Game star, reveals in a recent interview to Vogue Korea that lately she’s been obsessed with "L'Ascension for Organ" by the French composer Olivier Messiaen. I just think it’s something the world needs right now, whenever I play it my mood changes for the better"
Why is the third movement here different than the third movement in the orchestral version? Anyway, it is amazing to hear a performance by Messiaen himself!
I've adored this recording for years! Especially the last movement which is transcendence itself! A pity that Ducretet Thomson didn't make a better job of the original quality, but still amazing and definitive. Thanks so much for uploading it with the score.
That's cool. But to appreciate it one has to understand the venue. This isn't American small-town carpeted mainline church music. It is meant to pierce dark massive reverberant cathedrals with brilliant chromatic chords. Think of Perotin combined with early Stravinsky. The architecture is the instrument. Not the keyboard.

7:30 the flute-ish pitch here is really bright, adds depth that I didn’t normally hear
It's not a flute, it's called cornet. Those are always so bright and clear.

The orchestral third movement was not suited to the organ so Messiaen wrote a Toccata in it's place...
Beautiful.

Honestly speaking: this is not my music. Too dissonant.😢
