    I did this on my 24lb watersnake yesterday, while i was at it i decided to open it up and add some lube to the bearings and vaseline to the o rings for better water resistance. When i took the first part of the nose off, there was a long black coarse hair left in there wrapped around the armature and crossing the o ring seals obviously left in there by the person who assembled it in the factory 😂
    Anyway after removing the hair and adding some lube, i reassembled it to the factory marks. Then tested and all is good. I then turned the motor on and rotated the middle housing and far out the motor sounded like it gained a heap more speed. I rotated it about 10mm around until it wouldnt turn further then locked it up there. Cant wait to test it on the water!

    I learned something today. I never knew you could tune a trolling motor. Thanks for the tip!

    So you're clocking the motor changing the motor timing. I used to do this with rc motors when I raced. Didn't think we could with these. Gotta try this now

      Cool! It’s made a difference on a number of occasions with me at least. 👍

    Awesome tip! I have an old Power Plus Motorguide 30 lb Thrust I plan to cut shaft for a Kayak side mount project so will check if this fine tune applies on it.

    I've read comments that if you mess around with the brushes like that your motor won't last !
    I don't know for sure but I'm just saying .... I'll have to talk with some electric motor specialist about it ! LoL !
    I'm going to tune mine up a tad , and see how she does !
    Thanks for the video man , much appreciated 👍

      Thanks! I haven’t seen any negatives so far about it, and hypothetically, creating less friction could make it last longer. I’m no expert either though! 😂😁

    I have a small tiny plastic boat. It’s actually a phantom two Sebass tracker phantom to the whole boat. Total length is 9 foot 2 1/2 inches long and it’s 42 inches wide is a two-man boat. What size trolling motor would I need to push that size of a boat.

    Thank you for showing me this I just a free boat and don’t have a motor yet it’s only 9 foot long I am looking for a trolling motor don’t know what kind yet

      Nice! If it’s small like that, a small stern mounted trolling motor is an inexpensive option too. 👍

    it's because you are moving the two bolts away from the magnets inside the middle section. if the bolts are touching the magnets it's going to degrade the magnetic field and reduce the efficiency of the motor.

    can you put a higher screw ratio prop on a smaller boat, trading pushing power for top speed, say a motor meant for a big pontoon, pushing a kayak or canoe to say 10mph, though i guess much of the low speed energy is going to the water sticking to the boat

    • @fishyaker
      @fishyaker  Рік тому +2

      I’ve played around with a few different pitch props, and most still max out around five to six mph. A 24 volt motor will up it a couple mph’s.

    Can this be done to all minkota trolling motors? I have a turbo 35 it's a 27lb thrust. It's very old and slow.

    • @fishyaker
      @fishyaker  Рік тому +2

      I think it will on that one. See if there are two bolts under the prop.

    The way to tune a brushed DC motor is to advance or retard the motor brushes in relation to the housing magnets. You have to turn the main body or the brush housing. Basically the easiest thing to do to tune a trolling motor is to turn the main body of the motor not the end plate.

    If you take apart the bottom unit, you will see that those are the bolt that hold the bottom three units housing pieces together, and that's it. There is no mechanism that makes it go slower or faster. This is snake oil talk and that is it.

    • @fishyaker
      @fishyaker  Рік тому +2

      Negative. You can manipulate the friction.

    • @johnderrickrowland9683

      It's got nothing to due with friction. What's happening is your moving the brushes, in comparison to the magnetic field of the permanent magnets, in other words your advancing the push/pull of the magnetic field it may speed up a little bit but it's gonna draw more amps under load in order rotate like it should.

    Iv never had a pin shear it always just takes the prop out 😂 thinking it’s probably a drive pin. Either way GOOD WORK!!

    am looking at elec outboard as back up .. but was wondering could you use an aluminium prop

    • @fishyaker
      @fishyaker  Рік тому +2

      At least on most trolling motor models, all the props are made out of plastic. I’m not familiar with many aftermarket metal prop options.

    • @smulle96
      @smulle96 Рік тому +1

      my best bet is, 1. the motor is too weak to rotate a metal prop and give you thrust, 2. metalprop would snap the driveshaft without a doubt if youd hit something. 3 a trolling motor simply does not give the speed, to where a metal prop would benefit. its just a crawler action, and for crawling, and possibly hitting bottom, buying a new prop for 12 bucks is kinda where the trolling motor has its big win. you dont need to be careful as with your expensive outboard equipment

    Hello Mr. John! I have a question for you! I bought a 12.6 Newport vessel inflatable boat, and I am looking to buy a out motor for it! and I do not care what brand it is,,, as I listen to you on (Tune Your Trolling Motor) on your channel,,, and you mention that you have so many trolling motors back of your Store Place!! That I am wondering if you have some outboard motors too, that are in a very good conditions that you might want to sell?? so far i have looked so many small motors: that they very expensive for my wallet!! what I am looking is a short shaft engine, to take me to the ocean about a 1/4 mile away from the beach, and able to return back to safety.. I would like to thank you so much for your information and thanks for the instruction's on how to keep up with your trolley maintenance. have a good day, Sincerely Max.

      What he’s doing actually does not do anything. It’s not moving the magnets or the brushes. By moving the end cap is only making the noise change because it’s lose.

    I've seen several of these "tuning" videos. All of them are tuned by ear under no load. Faster no-load speed does not translate to more torque or thrust in the water & the declared "success" seems premature. I'd like to see a "before" measurement of speed under load and amperage. Then make the adjustment and measure both speed and amps again under same conditions. Plenty of guys burn up their chainsaws tuning the carb at max speed under no-load. They inadvertently make the fuel mixture too lean which overheats the engine when under load. The only way to tune a chainsaw is at full speed while cutting wood.
