Gordon Lightfoot is the greatest singer / songwriter ever... that's it. You can say Paul Simon, Neil Young, Joni, Paul and John, Bob Dylan, Joan, Ian... whomever you want to discuss... but, NOBODY can capture the emotion, the feelings of LIFE, LOVE and the beautiful mysteries, the human condition and the spirit of just being a person in this world the way Gordon Lightfoot has... the entire world owes him a debt of gratitude, and those who don't know his music have never seen the sunrise.
I recall the original version, but this one, with the emotion in his voice, is just brilliant. I never understood why he wasn't more widely revered. Well, he is revered by me.
This song is gut wrenching for those who have lived it but so beautifully done you can’t stop listening. Thankfully my neighbours at the cottage like Lightfoot too, they hear him often.
We saw him in St. Paul MN many years ago. Even then you could tell he was not healthy. His voice was still amazing. I am listening to him now and have a small crush on someone who is no longer with us! The emotion gets to me every time!
I lived this song for 12 years. The singer could be me. He finds the words that describe utter despair and somehow, it makes one feel better. What an outlet for emotion.
Lea Tzembelicos you touched the core of his singing.. velvet, but the counterpoint of his thin higher pitch is unique. That velvet quality usually only found in the likes of Ian Tyson (Four Strong Winds) & other baritones. & such reach in grab you lyrics... .
The Lightfoot arrangements are under appreciated. Brilliant to have no drums on the verses, and then the solid, simple beat on the choruses. Bass player walking down the F maj 7 to D m, and doing just enough throughout. It all gives the right space for Gordon's brilliant, clear vocals to tell the story. Great song, great performance.
You depicted the essence of Gordon Lightfoot’s appeal so perfectly… I have been enchanted by his musical gems since I was a teenager. In college, I sang several of his heart-wrenching ballads during our Winter Carnival Hootenanny (“Bon’Homme”)at Concordia University, Montreal…for each of 4 years. Lightfoot remains incomparable, unmatched…you relive his precisely poignant points of view in every line…we miss him & will always remember Gordon Lightfoot with love, admiration, respect & gratitude. 👌❤️🥰🎼🎤🎸🙏🏻
There will only ever be one Gordon Lightfoot. I have loved his music since I was a young girl. Nothing has changed over the years. So much in one small man!
This song was on the Endless Wire album. When it was being played on the radio, I was single and seeing a married woman so it still hits home for me. That one ended when I left Mn to go back to Alaska. Daylight Katy or Katie, was another great song from that album. Happy and peaceful birthday today, Gordon.
I've followed Gordon Lightfoot from 1970,and love his songs and the great vocals, and unusually sweet sounds of the strings that make a song sound sad ,or cold or even eerie, and the love songs more passionate. These days I'd like to see Gordon put on a few lbs. It's concern only, and I'm sure several people have thought it but won't say anything.
Hook laden Soft Rock from the impeccable Gordon Lightfoot. A notable US AC hit in 1978. Would have been perfect for England Dan and John Ford. They could easily have made this gem a smash hit in the late 70s!
I've seen him in concert since 1978, when "Circle is Small" was a new hit single, and I miss hearing it live in recent decades. Thanks for finding this great version. Sounds like some band members provided capable backup vocal duties. Pee Wee Charles on steel was a great member of the Lightfoot Band in the 1970s-80s. He returned for a few tracks on the 1997 Warners album, 'A Painter Passing Through.'
There was a round shaped apartment building in Toronto where he and many of his friends and their wives/girlfriends lived during the summers of love. Thus, the title. What a fantastic song!
The legend among legends..aman who has dedicated over 50 years of his life to pleasing his fans with his music..Gord, you are loved and deserve to be as you have touched so many hearts and lives in so many ways that the number is endless...
Two best songs from Endless wire this one song on breaking up with a cheater The other is Children had wings that song still tears me up 45 years later
@@terrichouinard3873 I’m sorry. I just went on Netflix to find it and it wasn’t listed any longer. I know it was 8 months ago but you would think it would still be on. It was a current interview with Gordon. I’m a great fan of his from way back.
Brilliant song full of heartache. Anyone who has ever felt the pain of a woman cheating on you can understand the gut wrenching pain in the pit of your stomach.
It's on BACK HERE ON EARTH - a different sounding version than the later one. It's also on ENDLESS WIRE (2nd studio recording), SONGBOOK (4 disc set) and Complete Greatest Hits.
It really blows me away how he can't be in the Hall. Just tells you how the hall is towards Canadian musicians as Rush finally got in. They should've been their 15 years ago.
michpackfan ...this is recorded live near the time of the newer version.....long time after original album version....hence PeeWee Charles on pedal steel on this version
@@111Watersongthe Pee Wee Charles days were good!! Many great concerts. The United Artist version, very early, is much faster. The was probably the version I heard at the concert. He didn't play it that often for being his last hit. Oh and I love the pedal steel!
Gotta go with dylan as he's a more diverse writer, but all else you've posted I agree with. Should be in the HOF for sure. He can reach in and rip the heart out of a person. Love this man.
Dec.12, 1977, at New York's Avery Fisher Hall. At that time, it would have been Terry and Rick with him, I think, but I don't know for sure who is doing background vocals. It was just before "Endless Wire" was released.
I have a studio version of Gordon L doing this song, which is on a "compilation" album of some sort. Also on there was a studio version of "Beautiful". The album is long lost, perhaps in storage, but I'm amazed that I can't find either of these studio versions online!! Can anyone help me find these two? My favorites by him of ALL time! David
I like this version from Endless Wire; as opposed to the original released through the united Artists Collection. His voice matured and so did the song.
This was the FIRST song that played in my head when I heard of Mr. Gordon Lightfoot s death. Rest in Peace and thank you for all the wonderful music.
Funny this was also the first song that came to mjnd when I heard he had passed away. RIP and thanks for all of the great music.
Me too!

nylawyer55 Gordon's equal to Phil Ochs!
love this song it keeps me young! 😂
nylawyer55 I agree with you. I once dated him in 1985 briefly and he is nothing like his songs at all. But his soul is pure gold!
The greatest. No other has ever moved me to the depths that has Gordon Lightfoot. Have been in love with him for 46 years since first hearing him.
Very well said.
@@sylviaknappe8323 What was the difference between the iconic songwriter and singer and Gordon the man (and lover)..?
A brilliant poet. An authentic singer. Rest in peace.
Incredibly emotional song; brings a flood of tears to any human.
The greatest songwriter. I've not been cheated on but this song gives me all the feels...mournfully sad, frustrated, empty. Brilliant.
You're very lucky, it's a very sad, empty feeling.
It's an absolutely devastating feeling and he nails it in these lyrics.
One of the greatest writer / storyteller ever. I only wished we could have enjoyed a concert with him . RIP
I recall the original version, but this one, with the emotion in his voice, is just brilliant. I never understood why he wasn't more widely revered. Well, he is revered by me.
Me, too. And the older I get, the more I appreciate his music.
He had to endure heart ache to write classics like this! The poets have to pay the price too! Thank you Gordon!
This is such a good song. One of his best. It hits you like a love song, but it's actually saying goodbye to an unfaithful lover.
Exactly right!👌💔
Right!? I was over here jamming to it and then it’s like……what lol
I like the last verse, “it’s all right to leave; it’s not all right to lie”
I agree with those who say this is their favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. Amazing!
This song just makes me melt. I love the lyrics and everything about it.
This song is gut wrenching for those who have lived it but so beautifully done you can’t stop listening. Thankfully my neighbours at the cottage like Lightfoot too, they hear him often.
Gut wrenching

I cry every time I listen to this song, especially now that he's no longer with us😢
My favourite Lightfoot song!
I've always enjoyed this song it's my favorite by Gordon Lightfoot. But then when I actually lived out the lyrics it wasn't quite so much fun.
Gordon Lightfoot is one of the best ever. Period.
My childhood was wonderful, thanks to my mom and dad and the lickdale gang, thanks for the memories ❤️❤️
I lived this song for 12 years. The singer could be me. He finds the words that describe utter despair and somehow, it makes one feel better. What an outlet for emotion.

@@BeachBadger78His vibrato helps with the intense emotionality of the song. A tour de force of vocal control and skill.
Love this song and Gordon. The best and so missed ❤
Gordon Lightfoot helps me recapture youthful moments and to kindle the spirit that helps me to strive for what I am able with the time that remains.

I never caught that
In the early years, there was no drummer

What song he did in 1980

Daylight Katy or Katie, was another great song from that album.

You got it right.
I was a fat, lonely teenager,in spite of e everything,Gordon was always there. RIP Friend

I am so glad to have heard him in concert twice. I have never heard anyone not like his music. This was a great memory hole for me, thanks.
I saw him in Waukeegan, IL at Genesee Theatre, March 2008... It was really cold that day...;-)
At least ten times here
Best version and good quality sound

Pee Wee was great! Mike Heffernan never could replace him on keyboards. I was at the 78 concerts, great! This, in my opinion was his last great album
There was a round shaped apartment building in Toronto where he and many of his friends and their wives/girlfriends lived during the summers of love. Thus, the title. What a fantastic song!
My favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. Thanks for posting!
dntamuu76 Gordon is equal to his friend Phil ochs too!
Mine too. Love the whole album
This is my favourite Gordon Lightfoot song.
Don't forget the Summer Side of Life!!!
Awful that he just passed. This is my favorite of his. It was his last Top 40 hit here in the US from 1977/78. Terrible news, upsetting.
This is a great song, by far my favourite.
Unquestionably the greatest most human break up song written.
The legend among legends..aman who has dedicated over 50 years of his life to pleasing his fans with his music..Gord, you are loved and deserve to be as you have touched so many hearts and lives in so many ways that the number is endless...
RIP Gordon Lightfoot!
Love this version as his voice is not hidden under those of the session singers. One his best.
dntamuu76 The version from 1968 features his voice more prominently that the 1978 recording.
The "session singers" were Gordon Lightfoot's own voice multi tracked. He did the same thing on the chorus of Daylight Katy.

I really like this version. :) It sounds like a nice mixture between the '68 version and the '78 version.
This song just breaks your heart in two
May his soul rest in the peace of Christ✝
Probably my second favorite Lightfoot song - right after "Now and Then."
I like this live version with its spare orchestration and no choral backing.
I don't know why but I like this song
The lyrics are about adultery
