To the guy that asked the question maybe you have burnt yourself out and you should take a break. You shouldn't force yourself to train if you aren't enjoying it. Take a few months off and see if BJJ pulls you back in. You could take some time of and find you want to try something new instead.

I've had rough times. What helps for me is to go to training but only stay for maybe half the class.
Also, shop around gyms. Find a gym that feels good for you and where you are now, mentally.
Yes, it's taboo to gym-hop. But you gotta do what's good for you, not your coach or teacher.

Question for you, Chewy: there's a fellow white belt in my gym and I always get hurt when I roll with him. A little while ago, he kneed me in the face and gave me a nosebleed when trying to do an armbar and most recently, he tried to do a bicep slicer and he did it wrong and it jacked up my wrist. Both times were accidents, but with my wrist, I had to miss competition camp and I'm just getting tired of it. How do I handle this? Bicep slicers are illegal til purple belt, which is part of why I'm upset, and also, this kind of thing never happens with other guys at my gym, so I don't know if he's reckless or just stupid. He's got seniority on the team, so I don't think talking to my professor will do much, so my only solution right now is to just try and avoid rolling with him. I know that injury is part of the sport, but this is really bugging me. please help lol

Nani W. I totally agree with you. Chew please answer some questions "When higher belts are being hard on lower belt." I been doing bjj for 7 months now. But I remember my second month a purple belt did a knee bar on me. At first I didn't know what he was doing so I obviously didn't tap till it was to late. Then after the round was over I stood up and my knee hurt so much I had to take a 10 minute break to stretch it. After the adrenaline is gone and the next day it still hurt. Chew as a lower belt, how do we even talk or confront higher belt what they did didnt seem ok? It was hard at that time because I don't know what is legal and not legal. Now I avoid this guy every open mat because the fear that I might really get injured.

I believe most of that is created in his own head. Bjj training should be relaxing and fun too. Even if he's the most talented guy in the gym no instructor there is expecting him to be perfect every day or to be born ready, he's there to learn and improve. That's how it goes with all martial arts. One day you do great, next day you take a beating. This is absolutely normal. That "pressure" is probably due to a lack of a certain maturity. Control your ego, keep improving, enjoy the process. That's it.

Hi Chewy - really enjoy the podcasts. I train at a gym where I was up until a few weeks ago the only female and also on average 10-20 years older than everyone else (in my 50's). I received my purple belt a few months ago. If I roll with a guy who is younger and stronger than I am and he out muscles me for the tap I am not as bothered as I am if I roll with a female who is a lower belt level and she gets the tap even if she is younger than me. My Coach wants me to 'help' the new females who have recently started but I just keep thinking that once they have some BJJ skills and knowledge they will be submitting me all the time. I don't worry about the new guys submitting me. I miss being the only female. Is that really messed up?

Hey chewy, a few questions for you. 1. I Just started teaching at my school were I train, but now I’m on the teaching side of things(both for Muay Thai and Jiu jitsu) plus I do part of the business aspect of the school as well, how do you keep up your personal training even though you have to teach more and take less classes.
    2. There is a student in jiu jitsu at our school that has high functioning mentally issue. He has been training with us for awhile but lately it feels like he is going backwards in his training( get stuck or confused with simple moves that I know he can do and execute well) and I want to help him improve but I’m not sure how to improve my teaching to help advance him along any advice?

I have the opposite. I have moved gyms many times due to the military. 4-5 years in and I've never received a belt or stripe. I have never been able to stay at 1 gym for more that maybe a year+
I am very frustrated at this point because I tap blues and get tapped by purples occasionally but it doesn't matter to coaches/professors. I also feel like it's immoral for me to compete anymore because I'm unintentionally sandbagging and outperform whites easily. The most recent gyms Ive train at also tend to treat me like an outsider for some reason.

Imo, Burnout is ultimately just caused by too much prolonged stress. Sometimes we're so stressed out we can't even process what all is actually stressing us out and maybe what we thought was stressing us out is actually just the tip of the iceberg. That's when it's time to take a break to process the stress.

for anyone willing to read it , i trained with a trainer for 3 years, i gave my best and did my best with him, he pushed me into sports i changed schools and did a lot of things because he wanted, he told me a lot of times that with him i would be a world champion, and lots of other goods things, but then after the first year he started to hit me, BARK orders at my face (he was an old school guy from anti terrorist special forces in Romania) but he hitted me, barked stuff at my face, and used to scream at his 10 year old son in front of everyone (who was a black belt also) i was his second in charge a blue belt that would be giving training and telling everyone what to do if he wasnt there, but then after these 3 years i went to his house asked to talk to him outside because i wanted to stop training with him, because i kinda found out he wasnt a good person at all and he was one of that guys who get control of emotionally weak people (so was i, emotionally weak after moving to Belgium an having no friends nor family and not a THING to do) and found a lot of bad stuff about him, and decided i would stop training with him, so i asked to talk to him and he agreed not knowing what i would say to him, and i told him ´´ hey /name/ i want to stop training, thank you for your time`` he asked me why and i didnt wanted to say: because you are a psycho motherfucker who brainwashes people into thinking you are some kind of kung fu panda who knows everything, so i just said i dont want to say the reason, im just stopping, as soon as i said that he told me, so youre done you will be nobody in the world of martial arts, did i do the right thing?

I was reaching this point in my judo classes. I have trained for three years, with injuries life events that change my schedule and a generally timid attitude have kept me from progressing. I've never had any belt promotions and wasnt sure if I wanted to keep it up. I wanted to train but its discouraging when you never really feel like you're progressing like everyone else. Or starting over every time you come back from recovering injury. When I got a promotion at work I couldn't go. It wasn't a choice. I had one class that was open while I was off work but the weeks of being healthy and not going in was eating at me quite a bit. I found a gracie academy near my work that had a better schedule and signed up there to take the morning classes. I now hold both gym memberships. Still a white belt in both classes but having the ability to train and not the schedule pushed me to realise that my self doubt and worry about being promoted was all in my head and not that important and that i just had to figure it out and just find something.

Maybe your friend needs to find a school where there are more advanced students. Some place where he isnt at the top of the pyramid, so to speak.
Or shift his focus to really just training lesser ranks for awhile. Sounds like he is plenty good enoigh that he could offer private lessons to beginners. Thats a way of staying active that could alleviate the kind of pressure hes talkinng about.
Or just back off of jiujitsu altogether for a little while. If youre not happy with your circumstances it is OK to do something different!
