  • In this activity, families will make two different kinds of sundials to help tell the time using only the sun; one using their bodies and the sun to track their shadows on the ground using chalk (a “human sundial”), and another with a paper plate and, straw, crayons, and patience! In both activities, families will use their observation, prediction, and communication skills as they track the shadow’s movement across the plate/ground.
    Step 1: Prepare Plate
Roll a ball of Play-Doh and place in the middle of the plate. Write the number “12” on the edge of the plate with a crayon.
    Step 2: Add the Shadow-Caster
Draw a line on your plate from the Play-Doh to the “12”. Then stick your straw in the Play-Doh and angle it so it is above the line. Make sure it stays put!
    Step 3: Go Outside!
Around noon, take your plate outside and carefully turn it so the shadow of the straw falls along the line to the number “12”. Weigh down your plate with a rock so it doesn’t blow away.
    Step 4: Check Shadow
Every 15 minutes go check on the location of your shadow. What happens?
Step 5: Make a Human Sundial
Make a sundial with your own shadow, too! Have a friend or family member draw your outline with chalk every 15 minutes. Make sure to stand on the same spot!
