It took us all day and 200 miles to find this place | Best roads to ride

- We tend to wing a lot when we try to find the best roads to ride while motorcycle camping and don’t put as much planning into things like we should. That quickly becomes evident when, in our wanderings, we try to find things locals have suggested to us - and at times become lost and confused. But what it really comes down to is we’re riding motorcycles in very beautiful, scenic areas, so even when we’re lost it’s still an awesome ride and adventure.
In this episode we stumble upon the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Clingmans Dome, the train wreck from the movie The Fugitive and did you know that there really is a road called “The Road To Nowhere”? What a great day for riding!

Relive feature at the end was great
Mt Mitchell is the highest point in NC maybe in the eastern US. Clingman may be highest in the Smokey Mountains Park.
I'm sad that I didn't get to see Clingman's Dome. I went there in 82 and was awestruck by the beautiful, tall blue spruce fir trees. I went back a few years later and was shocked by the devastation that the pine bark beetle had destroyed the entire forest. One can still see remnants of the destroyed forest, but I'm happy to see that it is coming back.
that triumph tiger is awesome looking. 😁
Love the Relive and the video!! Outstanding 🇺🇲
Frank over on FnA just reminded me of something that happened to my wife and I back in 2013... It was a good laugh... now... I think you can relate to it after pulling Ruby so many miles...
Ha ha ha... Frank... Just reminded me of something that happened to me on the way to Sturgis back in 2013. Ha ha ha...
We were riding my Harley, (`04 Ultra Classic), pulling our KwikKamp camper trailer. The sun was beating down on us and was making me so sleepy that I couldn't control it and I kept falling asleep... while riding a very loaded bike with camper trailer. As I was falling asleep, we were slightly swerving across the centerline... My wife, who is from Romania, would "nudge" me to wake me up. We only had a few more miles on Hwy 212 to Belle Fourche, South Dakota. So, each time I'd fall asleep and start easing out of our lane... my wife would wake me up and I'd straighten up in our lane. We finally got to the truckstop in Belle Fourche. After, we got back home from Sturgis, my wife declared she was NEVER getting on another bike in her life.
Thanks!
soooooooooooo glad to see ya riding Ms. Alice again.
VERY GOOD, VERY INTERESTING - THE ROAD TO NOWHERE
From top of the tower on Clingmans dome, you can see into South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.
Love, love, love the ending map and yellow routes taken! VERY, very cool!
Very nice. Just an FYI. Mt. Mitchell is the highest point in N.C. Paved road up there turns off the Blue Ridge Parkway. David R. below said he thought the GSMNP is the most visited National Park in the U.S. and his recollection is right. And very nice job with the shed hasp and padlock. Is that a Harley option? Happy Trails!
Old School…Awesome!
Another great adventure, this time near my home turf. I love that you included the Relive App footage at the end and I hope you use it more often.
I found the road to nowhere last year. kinda neat. looks like they replaced the pole barriers. when i was there someone had cut one of the poles down to ground level so that you could get your motorcycle through. someone who will rename nameless rode their motorcycle through the tunnel. at 13:40 if you look over that bridge along the bank if i remember correctly there are some old cars placed there to help keep the erosion down.
Mt. Mitchell is the highest peak in the Applachian mountains at 6683. Clingsmans Dome is second at 6644. Both are in North Carolina.
I had friends in Knoxville and I visited the dragon for almost 15 years back in the 80's and early 90's. I had to replace my saddle bag rails every so often because I wore them off in some of the curves. Then my friends moved to Colorado Springs and I haven't been back since. I have a hankerin' now though. P.S., I loved the map at the end. That was great!
Highest point on the Appalachian Trail is clingmans dome. Hiked over it this spring and didn’t stop on our motorcycle ride end of July due to rain and clouds
Lovely couple, keep cool.
Thank you! 😃
Love the Forest Gump cameo appearance.. I laughed so hard! 😆
Wow, great video and pics. Enjoyed it! Thanks. Looks like you had a great day of riding. No rain is good.
Good ride. Very cool views
Glad you enjoyed it
That whole area of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee is absolutely full of incredible motorcycling roads. Your video brought back so many great memories. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! I had no idea that train wreck was real. It's crazy that it was just left there like that🤔
great video and a very interesting history lesson thanks for sharing take care and be safe
Just got notified ... better late than never the map animation is pretty cool
Mount Mitchell is the Highest mountain east of the Mississippi and it's on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and not too far from my stomping grounds.
Hey guys, klingerman Stone was in Tennessee. It is the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. The highest mountain east of the Mississippi is Mount Mitchell State Park Mount Mitchell is in North Carolina. It's 6687 I believe
Yeah and you're later video you should have stopped there as you went up from Asheville on the BRP
My best friend and I rode down from Ohio. We stayed in Townsend Tennessee. We rode across the parkway to 129. We rode the Tail of the dragon then around the South side to Cherokee back across the Newfound Gap which is right next to Clingmans Dome. My wife and I honeymooned there and have been back many times. Only on four wheels not two! Enjoy
North Carolina is a beautiful state. i was stationed in Goldsboro, NC. back in the 70's. mostly went to the beaches. did go see that big mansion in western Carolina once. but being young and dumb, wanted to party all the time not sight see. you definitley grow wiser as you age. i love the little towns all around the Carolina's neat video. love the train wreck
Thats some high tech maps ! Cool stuff 😎
hi guys this was a very good video ,the scenery your sharing of all the stops nice WOW! thank you
Love the route summary ending bit...really cool 👍
Wow! I have so thoroughly enjoyed the Great Smoky Nat'l Park. I've been through it three or four times, and I'm so ready to go again. Thanks for the vicarious experience.
Hi! My friend
Wow! There are so many best fun things to me
It's a healing bike camping video
The camping site is so beautiful
Have a lucky day
👍👍👍
I 💜 the Smoky's! My home away from home.
Clingsman Done highest point in TN.
Really enjoyed this video. There is nothing comparable to ridding in the Smokies..... So wish I was there!!!!!
This is a ride we have taken many, many times! Great Smokey Mtns. Blue Ridge Parkway. Two of our favorites. Living in North Carolina definitely has its perks ❤️
Love watching your videos
Wife & I were there in May. Stayed in Bryson City for a little over a week. Rode ALL over and many of the same as y'all. We also rode The Rode to Nowhere. Very cool ride and beautiful. Fontana Dam is also a scene from The Fugitive. And i had no idea the train/bus wreck was there!! Dang it!! We were literally 1/2 mile from it at a Best Western on day. Enjoy the ride y'all cause we enjoy the videos.
My first vacation with Garmin ZumoXT last week. Don't know about all the features but somehow got there and got home.
Enjoyed your video. We're leaving Illinois tomorrow, headed for the great smokey mtn, np! The "relive the roads" was pretty cool.
I have been to clingmans dome and road to nowhere a few times amazing riding
I love seeing y’all near me riding and enjoying the Smokies. I look forward to your videos every week.
Been through the Smokies many times but missed all the tiny roads because of time constraints. Your ride was really cool. I've missed a lot. Thanks for the ride a long. 👍👍🏍🏍🏍🙋♂️
I am reliving a lot of wonderful memories. Dianne and I have traveled all the same routes as you have and experienced a lot of the same things
Great episode today
GPS can and will send you down a one way street directly into 35 MPH traffic during rush hour, it happened to me and a friend in Lacey WA.
Always enjoy the ride and your comments. That music gets me goin....LOL. Did not know about the road to nowhere. Enjoyed the video.
Was up by Sylvia this weekend. Never knew about the traiin wreck. Looks like I'm going back for that, and to ride the Blue Ridge for a while.
Highest point North Carolina is Mount Mitchell off of the parkway
Hey Chris, Thanks for the history on the road to nowhere. Prayers Flying for safe travels.
For bear country camping would you consider a portable electric fence? The lightest out there is 2.4 lbs for a good night’s sleep.
Did the same 3 spots last year except I walked down to the train and rode into the tunnel.
Love your route summary at the end. Thanks for sharing your travels.
Great video 👍I love it when ya’ll visit places I’ve been. I watch the video and say, look I know where that is. I really enjoy Chris when she tells us the history around the places you visit. Adventures and memories, got to love it. Please Stay Safe ❤
Great video. I was just down there April of 22’. Your video brought back my memories. Can’t wait to ride down there again from NJ. Sylvia has great pizza spot that I like
Good video❤️
That relive was pretty cool. Looks like a great day for you two.
Thank you! Been partially in the area, Fontana Dam, Cherokee, after I left Deals Gap! Beautiful area…✌🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Oh man you are so close to the Fugitive Dam, hope its in one of your next video's, mayby when you do the Dragon..
Rok Straps are the BEST. I use them alllll the time. If you don't have any, get em! Most versatile tie downs around!
Totally agree.
I like the padlock on Alice😂
love NC ! bought property in Franklin so I can ride all over the area !!
Y’all are so entertaining. Great video.
Awesome. I love that area...well, I haven't been to the road to nowhere, though. Thanks.
Need to ride the Blue Ridge p'way in NC for some awesome views and road
Love you both and love your adventures with all the information and history of your exploring.
You guys would absolutely love Rt. 100 in VT
That train wreck site was cool! I’ve been to that area many times but I never heard about the Fugitive train wreck site. Hope you took time to do the short hike to the lookout on top of Klingman’s Dome!
Awesome job on the production of this video.
I’m disappointed you did not go to the dome, it’s been 30 years and I still remember being in awe of the view.
This is great. I need to go see this site next time I'm out that way. You guys need to see the Fugitive Dam the he jumped from. It's not far from where you guys are/were. A very spooky dam built in 1933 on U S 129, North Carolina side.
Always love your videos! Chris what kind of ½ finger gloves are those?
Best part of riding is finding stuff like that train wreck . One of ours was finding the house in California that was the Brady bunch house.😂👍
Love the graphics at the end. I will be in NC in two weeks riding around
Actually Mt. Mitchell is the highest point in NC and is the highest mountain east of the Rockies. Just an FYI
Hi Rich and Chris. Are you guys heading up here to PA? JimThorpe is great with awesome riding.
Miss your episodes
I've been riding in that area a dozen times, didn't know about the train. I guess I need to go back. I did know about the dam that Harrison Ford jumped off of..
Cllingman's Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, not in all of NC.
Mt. Mitchell is the highest point in NC and it is worth riding out the parkway to get to it if you have time.
Another very enjoyable film, stunning scenery, thanks so much for filming it. Btw what happened to the BMW Richard used to ride? Did I miss something??
back a few episodes we sold it
Good choice. Those BMWs are way too practical (boring) - in my humble opinion, that is. Cheers
Also the highest point on the Appalachian trail.
Love watching your adventures.
I've been going to that area for 25 years and have yet to ride all the roads I want to ride. Fontana Dam is a great stop. Cell signal is hard to find, so bring a GPS.
Go over to the "Bobarosa " just east of you. Biker bar& grill.
Lots of nice riding in the area
Awesome.
Yall are at the most beautiful place in the world.
Thanks You we do love sharing with you
You did this video in my home area.
Awesome!!
There was supposed to be another train wreck that you can hike to. Old train back in the 1800’s. I heard a story that the railroad company built workers homes next to the tracks and if a man were killed while working they paid the home off for the family. So that’s where the old saying “ He bought the farm “ came from!
Check out a place called look out mountain in Georgia, your supposed to be able to look across 7 states
Hi and thanks for some very nice videos. You have a lot of good sound recording, how are you doing this with the GoPro/Sena? Intercom recording and all your comments on the way?
Hey guys.. Mount Mitchell is the highest point in North Carolina
I took my Tom Tom off the bike and hiked up to top of dome to check the altitude. I had a 15 foot difference of the posted.
Bryson City native here and a member of one of those thousand families. The Road to Nowhere is one of my favorite places, and the area around the tunnel is supposedly one of the most haunted places in the world. According to Cherokee mythology the witch Spearfinger haunts the place. She enjoys removing children's livers with her sharp stone finger and eating them. I've been there a hundred times and I've never seen her.
Couldn't they at least built a path to the cemetery? Strange.his bike is miss alice, does yours have a name? And who was alice? Thanks love your adventures!
Was there in September of 2021 ")
Bryson city is awesome
Love the area.
My wife and I spend a couple weeks there ever year but we're usually too busy trying to ride as many roads as we can. Might have to slow down one year and do some site seeing.
I've enjoyed following this channel for a couple of years now. It's always interesting and very well done. Can someone fill in a gap for me? I watched when you upgraded from a tent to a motorcycle trailer. I remember when Chris's original BMW had to be replaced with the GS. You had a nice video explaining what happened and why it was replaced. You did a nice episode on your decision to go with the truck and camper. Somewhere along the way I must have missed something. The truck and camper are gone and Rich is back on the HD and you're back to tent camping. Just curious what prompted the decision. I enjoy your videos just as much either way. Thanks!
It was really briefly mentioned but if I'm not mistaken, they sold the truck (???) I think but still have the camper and they're basically using the camper as their house or home base. They then will do various trips on just their motorcycles with a tent for anywhere from a week to several weeks at a time. After each trip, then they head back to home base and regroup before leaving for the next trip. This way they're not dragging the big camper everywhere they go. Someone please correct me if I missed anything or am wrong but that's what I've gathered thus so far. Like you said, I also really enjoy their content and have been following for about a year or two at this point - actually when I started watching, they had just recently sold their house and had started drifting and living on the road maybe a month or two prior. So it's been a cool journey to see them evolve over time as well! Thanks for sharing and ride safe! 😀
Thanks for the update. I felt like I missed an episode or two of a favorite show.
(from Bolivia)
Hey guys thanks for sharing your aventures with us !
You’re welcome Bill. 👍👍
