Thank you, sir. I am scheduled for surgery in the morning, having already undergone chemo and radiation in Oct & Nov 2013 that my vocal cord tumor survived (barely). You have given me some encouragement! Tom Whitworth
Thank you Mr Grimsinger for sharing your story. I am scheduled for surgery in a couple of weeks. I have been terrified about how my life will change but your story makes me feel better.
The vocal folds are fully removed. There is a hole between the trachea (tube going down to your lungs) and the esophagus (tube going down to your stomach) with something called a voice prosthesis in the middle. The sound doesn't vibrate in the voice prosthesis itself or in the vocal folds - the voice prosthesis's job is to keep the esophagus and trachea separate when he's not speaking. But, when you are trying to speak, the air passes through the voice prosthesis, into the esophagus and vibrates at a closure at the top of your esophagus called the esophageal sphincter. It's the same tissue that vibrates and makes noise when you burp. - Graduate Speech Therapist student
Very good Advice Sir !!!!!Thank you Sir I just done my surgery last April 12 took my voice box out .I’m in the healing process.finished my radiation took me a month but I didn’t do chemo .I’m eating good normal food thru my mouth I’m using feeding tube 3 months .
Im telling you still in hospital day 86 ... but i didnt need inspiration from anybody if you want to live you go for it and there are always option to speak again ... im not speaking yet but before xmas im going to bend some ears again no doubt ,i keep you informed 😊😊
While this is partially true, the reconstructive process alters the anatomy of a total laryngectomy. As you continue your education, you’ll be able to expand your understanding but you have a nice grasp on surgical voice restoration! The vibrating segment (sound source) is actually the pharyngoesophageal segment of which the cricipharyngeus is a component although most have a myotomy to assist with swallowing and speaking. This also changes the tonicity of the segment and inherently, voice quality to an extent. Congratulations on your explanation though! Fabulous for a grad student!!
I m from Turkey and nobody informed us such devices on the neck. they sent people in turkey to home just with naked neck how can we find such devices. could you please inform ??? beacuse my father had total tracheotomy and the docter here did not inform us about such kind of devices. He just let us to home and said that my father should try to talk by closing the small hole. please help.

Interesting. I heard that after a laryngectomy you can breathe easier. Do you know if this is true?
Thank you Mr. Grimsinger for sharing your story!
Your video will surely provide a lot of inspiration to people.

God bless him :)
His voice isn't too bad I can understand him really well, just put a scarf on and you could pass off as not having the device.
how can he breathe with the hole covered?
Vanessa C His mouth and nose
I thought they breathed through the stoma. Isn't that the point of it?
Vanessa C I'm not too sure but I highly doubt it
ohhh ok. Thanks for replying :)
Vanessa C You're welcome :)
