I find it funny how people complain about the more cautious gameplay in the second game, since that’s EXACTLY how I played the first game. Granted, that’s because of my overly cautious ass having the risk taking skills of a scared puppy combined with the one hit deaths, but it’s still funny to me. However, things like the enemies randomly entering rooms does make this a pain at times depending on the level, so I can see why people don’t like it.

it’s a nice contrast to the first game, and contrary to the uploader’s thoughts; you definitely can wing the game (some certain levels like some of beards), but if you have enough mechanical skill it’s very possible to complete the whole game in jacket mode (mindlessly mowing down whatever you see, the second you see it)
The level design does reward planning though, it just isn’t required.

Pretty good video. I will say a few gripes
As far as the analysis of what the characters represent. I dislike when a game forces you to do something and then tells you that your a terrible person for doing that. The game never gives you an option to not kill the enemies to progress. Also the idea of enjoying the combat in this game makes you a bad person or in some way lesser is laughable.
As another note we never learned about the Russians in the first game because the game never gave us any idea as to who they were. If they game itself does not humanize the characters then is the player expected to?

i 100% agree with you on dead ahead; as much as i love this game and defend this game from ppl who've played 1, and don't like 2. but yeah, there's no reason why a level as hard and long as dead ahead should be in the game at like the middle of the game, it should be way later in the game like release or take over. it's easy for me, but that's just because ive played this game a thousand times :P

Love your editing and video style, but as someone with a near encyclopedic knowledge of this game some parts of this video hurt my soul such as you saying Manny Pardo has no ability or quirks when he has the fastest fire rate with shotguns, a quicker 180 turn with its own animation, and has extremely fast executions with the Mendoza and shotgun. I would also say the levels aren’t that hard, but I then remember how many times I rage quit on Dead Ahead and realize I just spent an extreme amount of time on this game. Also, if I’m correct Tony not participating in the execution of the Henchmen is intentional as he is the only Fan not killed by the son.

One of the things that really sours me about Hotline Miami 2, is that the devs literally made the game to give the finger to the fanbase, made it frustrating on purpose, and just were specifically doing things that inconvenienced people to fuck with them. Hell, the reason bugs didn't really get patched out, is more than likely because the devs didn't want to touch the game after it was finally finished.
These devs didn't truly love the creation they made, they hated it, and made the sequel less because they wanted to, but because they felt they needed to and decided to give everyone the finger at the same time while doing it. The game is supposed to be this completely unnecessary statement AGAINST us, and I hate it.
I still prefer the second game to the first, but knowing how much they decided to make HM2 specifically to shit on the people who enjoyed the first game because they couldn't handle pressure on their own, just bugs the shit out of me.
I will always love this game, but I can't not have something against the devs for the mentality they had with this leading to the game overall being neglected and possibly being worse than what could of been had they laid those feelings aside.
I can love this game, I can see the little bits of actual care they had and joy they had for certain parts, but I'm not blind enough to let that stop me from calling them out, as others should be. They made the game to fuck with us, and that's the primary objective. To insult us, to judge us. That is not something I can just rollover with them.
I will say this though, that I actually get it where some of that fucking pain comes from. From my own creations having some similar issues to what they experienced, and some of my own unique, non-similar experiences. But that doesn't excuse neglecting and harming your piece. You have Steele yourself and get through it, it's the right thing to do. At least, that's what I feel, and in the end, they did. But god, I hate this distaste towards the people who brought them up in the damn first place.

I also believe richard is more of a meta-narrator that tries to express the nihilistic viewpoint of the devs, I believe hotline miami not only tries to create a discussion around violence but also about how death should be treated like, always humanizing the person behind the dead body but staying with the comfort that dying is not a big deal.

Because there are countless more video essays about how HM2 is somehow underrated despite the series being beloved by many. 2 changed the balance towards gunfighting and larger spaces and left out a lot of the arcadey design flow the original had with more it expects from the player which makes it rightfully criticized by those who love 1's melee combo focus. The only people who misunderstand Hotline Miami are those who overanalyze it, playing the games, mastering them is understanding them.

    • @coldturnipgreens
      @coldturnipgreens 12 днів тому

Believe it or not, Hotline Miami is not misunderstood. Its developers wanted violence to be seen as bad but ironically ended up creating one of the best and satisfying hyperviolent series in gaming based on Drive 2011 and other cool things. I consider it a rightful less horror driven successor to Rockstar's Manhunt 1 in terms of how violence is portrayed in a way that speaks for itself.

I actually completely forgot about Corey's roll during gameplay. IMO the game is indeed quite hard. Even then the game was tons of fun. I actually think both games lacked difficulty and content to reallly explore gameplay. I plan on replaying both but I dont feel like its worth repeating all content. Honestly I cant see why specifics of each character's "stats" and details are so game breaking, all options seemem fun to me from beginning to end. IE the second swan, i see him as simply an extra option to make things faster, while the chainsaw is really the only important part of the characters gameplay wise. I see Wrong Number as a step up in every way, I really did feel a more "John Wick-y" style with the second game. The story is indeed a huge part of why i played it. I actually tried playing HM2 before 1, I bought it for the content in Payday 2, and later bought the first game. Something else ive never used in either game is targeting. Ive ignored at least a few options and mechanics while playing the series, which made things tougher than necessary, but i honestly think the difficulty was perfectly satisfying, these games are the Dark Souls of top-down GTA. I'm sorry to completely disagree with opinions presented on the video, yet i still enjoyed it. I still believe a post-apocalyptic HM3 would be awesome, even without the original characters, it doesnt need the name Hotline Miami 3, it doesnt have to give the same message, I just think there's too much left on the table to be shared only by the community, although that's a very nice problem to have. I still think HM3 could be awesome, there's a thousand possibilities for these devs, they made something truly remarkable.

Maybe it’s just the way I think (I’m someone who often wants to make me want to have the same fate as the son in HM2)., but I honestly played the game the wqy Dennaton supposedly wanted the player to play, and was completely confused when people complained about this playstyle until I saw other gameplay, so I honestly don’t see how HM1s gameplay isn’t fitting to HM2s levels.

Both of these games are really good but incredibly frustrating

The only type of pain I like.
