It's rare to be aware of their presence and next to unheard of to be attacked, as they usually leave the area when a human is making noise. The only danger for humans from cougars is if we go near the den they have their cubs in, as mother mountain lions can be extremely protective. We are exponentially more a risk to them than they are to us.
