I bought 2 90 HP, E-tech's for 200 dollars, Both still running strong... Oh yeh'' in salt water. Going on 5 years.
I own twin 2019 e-tec 150's the one thing I can say is I love how they run. They have been relatively reliable only had one issue using ethanol fuel and let it sit for 6 months one year due working out of state. Corrosion killed 2 injectors and the fuel pump. Prior to that I had twin 1996 Evinrude 150 Ocean pros great engines only issue I had was ethanol fuel hosed up the carbs.
I'm still running a 1996 Evinrude Intruder 150 on my bass boat. I put about $1,000 in fuel parts about 4 years ago: carb fuel chambers, new OMS fuel pump, carb rebuild kits, and went through all fuel hoses in the boat. I still use the oiling system and the engine smokes a bit when cold, but runs like a champ and get between 55-60MPH (GPS) on my 19' bass boat. Sure I'd love a new 4-stroke, if for nothing else the fuel efficiency, but it's hard to replace an engine that runs this well.
I've always been a 2 stroke fan. So when I spec'd my boat back in 2018 I went with an Evinrude G2. Reviews were good. A 10 year warranty. So I figured after 18 years they must have DI tech worked out. Right? Well, first powerhead failed at 25 hours. To their credit, Evinrude sent a fully dressed powerhead. Unfortunately, Second powerhead suffered various failures every 30 to 50 hours. (Mostly related to oil injection.) Again, BRP fixed it every time without question. Final straw was local service point told me they would no longer work on G2s. Sold it early 2023 to an Evinrude fan. Motor had 5 years remaining on the warranty and was OK with the engine report. My new Merc V8 just clicked over 150 trouble free hours. Sea Tow no longer gasses up his rig when he sees me launching.
Never had a jonno fail. 70 hp 45 years old, 120 hp 35 years old and now a 1999.175 ocean pro
All the carb Evinrude ran good for years. My dad has a 25hp Evinrude a 1994 model and it still runs great
Yes I feel the same way, so many were runn for years until the fuel injection motors. Do you have any maintenance secrets?
This is really really interesting. Here in California, at my local marinas anyway, the perception of the Evinrude's is the opposite. There is (or I guess I should say was) a huge demand for the Etec's specifically. It was THE motor to get. In fact take a trip to Catalina Island and to this day it's still about 40% etec's when you look at vessels moore'd out there, and people seem to absolutely love them. One of the big dealers in central Cali had a huge waiting list for them - a lot of bummed people when BRP announced Evinrude was bowing out. I wonder if it's an environmental thing or maybe a dealer network thing? What's funny is the dealer in Central Cali still says they're an "Evinrude dealer" and still swears by them. Maybe they're in denial lol.
Force and Chrysler - now that's one I think everyone can agree on lol. But hey if you have it, run it!
I agree, if you have it and it runs why not. I remember when the etec motors first came out, they were actually better with emissions than four stroke and I think many lakes only approved them for their environmental prowess. What motor are you running? Keith the OutboardDad
@@OutboardDad Ha, I guess my message was confusing. By 'environmental' I meant like, the environment the engines are ran in (Is there something about the weather on the West Coast that makes the eTecs more reliable?) Overall warmer - is that helping somehow?
As far as what I'm running - I'm currently running a new 115 Mercury ProSX on the back of an 80's Ranger we restored & repowered, and then on the family boat, we're still sterndrive. Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi. Then on the aluminum high-lake trout boat, just a little 18hp 2 stroke (yamaha clone).
@ Nice, I totally believe most motors here in the east are neglected. Either lack of knowledge or just not caring and expect them to run without proper maintenance. So the Yamaha can take the most abuse.
E-tec owner here... only thing I have to complain are those god forsaken injectors 🙄 I believe it has to do with the amount of oil being injected when no employing the XD100 oil setting, making the combustion chamber full of carbon deposits on the injectors as well on the spark plugs.
but in my area is an oil hard to come by and no to mention the astronomical price for a gallon. I wonder to hear the experience of someone running an e-tec engine with XD100 oil injection configuration but using any generic TC-W3 oil.
evinrudes have the most comedic and concerning failures that is sometimes hard to even explain to the customer. it's still wild to me that Evinrude E-tecs only need maintenance every 3 years cause there's a lot of things i'd say need to be regularly checked that a customer wouldn't ever think of
What do you feel that needs to be regularly checked to keep these motors running? Do you own one now?
When are they going to build a light weight 4 stroke 150hp? Suzuki 150 weight a whopping 522 lbs my 2-stroke is 100 lbs less. My scuppers will be under water
Merc 150hp is only just over 200kg. That's pretty light.
@@russianbotstein1422 Thats 455lbs for a 20 inch, a 25 inch would add maybe 25lbs, thats 480lbs. I need twins that's heavy!
