This is good information, doing an aftermarket headunit I have the same issue with reception, trying to figure out how to hook it up to the factory powered antenna.
You the man! Fellow Islander here as well, finally a break from the steaming weather. I have the same issue so I suspect I need to do this rewire as well. My key fobs both stopped working as well just recently...always something with these damn ML's
I seem to have the same issue in my 2006 W251 R-Class, very weak signal. I have already switched the amp in the tailgate, no change. The tip of checking power supply to the amp and if necessary providing alternative power is very helpful, thank you!
Thanks for sharing! I have a W163 and I installed a new head unit and it picks up FM channels but not a single AM channel. I know which connector and pin in the factory radio harness is for the signal amplifier; however, I don't know if it needs ACC power or something like a remote signal to turn it on. I can't find that information anywhere. Hah! I should have waited until the end and you showed it needs constant power. Thanks!

I appreciate the comment. Yes, there always seems to be something with the ML!
