- Brunswick Community College's (BCC) Center for Aquaculture and Biotechnology (CAB) has implemented a Biofuels from Algae project as a joint effort between the departments of Aquaculture and Biotechnology. This included the design and construction of an 1800 gallon photobioreactor system during phase 1 of the project. Phase II focused on the downstream processing of oil extraction. BCC's CAB has a patent pending status on this process, which is purely mechanical, easily scalable and relatively cheap to implement. The final phase of the project (pending funding) will optimize and refine the oil extraction process, which will give us the opportunity to file a full patent, license the patent to industry or develop a trade secret with an industry partner, which will quickly move the process to commercialization. If the final phase is funded we will also obtain data on the yield of oil production, yield to biodiesel conversion, chemical composition of the extracted oil and determine the best species for use in the process developed at BCC.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I guess since it is still in it's infancy, they are using a lot of energy to make a small amount of oil. But the potential to do this on a much larger scale would probably be where the environmental pay off would come in.

Well they still have to use acidic substances such as Sodium Hydroxide to separate the Bio Diesel from the other liquids in the oil? Will the resulting product Gel in low temperatures like bio-Diesel made from Fats and fryer oils?
Could you tell us a little more detail about the 1 Micron filter system that you are using. Any details about it would be appreciated.
This is just like growing a tree, except the grow is controlled, and algae is very easy to process as a biomass. It seems like the algae can be separated from water by some means of evaporation.
Honestly after watching this video and many others it seems the best conclusion for getting the most viable oil out of algae would be if they teamed up with a thermal depolymerazation plant. its the way most oil in the earth is made anyway heat pressure and time just sped up really fast using one of those plants. but its hard for them to put 2+2 together.. we have the tech to do it

Ummm Basically most parts can be obtained from an aquarium supply store, but still, there is specific algae used (where to get) and you need to dry and compress (nothing special there) in a way that is protected from rain. By offering a "Kit" that already has all this, a school enterprise can obtain private funding by selling such things to people that just want to play.

Spirulina thrives at a pH around 8.5 and above and a temperature around 30 °C (86 °F). They are autotrophic, meaning that they are able to make their own food, and do not need a living energy or organic carbon source. A nutrient feed for growing it is:[6]
Baking soda 16 g/l (61 g/US gal)
Potassium nitrate 2 g/l (7.6 g/US gal)
Sea salt- 1 g/l (3.8 g/US gal)
Potassium phosphate 0.1 g/l (0.38 g/US gal)
Iron sulphate 0.0378 g/l (0.143 g/US gal)
@enticed2zeitgeist I honestly don't know how the whole patent process works. You might be right. Would you want to risk it though? I'm for any process that guarantees it's public availability.
how do you store people? People used to store horizontally until apartments were built. The same method should apply to making algae. Build a skyscraper and fill it full of algae tanks. Build 10 skyscrapers filled with algae tanks and you could fuel the world 3 times. Efficient space use.

@enticed2zeitgeist It depends on what they do with the patents. If they patent it then sit on the technology then I agree with you. If they patent it and make that patent publicly available then I'm all for it. Otherwise, without that patent, someone else could just patent it and sit on it like an oil company.

An interesting idea for you to use for fundraising would be hobby-home kits. It might be kinda fun to grow your own fuel in a small shed in the yard.
Or they could just sell oil animal feed fertilizer and power their school on methane gas fired generators from their project.
This algae discovery is amazing. Now tell me,How much algae is needed to produce the target fuel. Knowing all the things in the world that run on fuel,a large amount is needed in constant repetitive supply. Is it more efficient than biofuels like biogas and biodiesel. How does it perform in relation to other crude oil based fuels. I saw a video like this where they grew the algae in enclosed environments,they supplied CO2 and light through optic tubes,the algae would produce certain oils which they extracted and then separated to get the fuel desired. Here it seems that you are actually harvesting the algae not its secretions. This would mean that algae farming facilities would be needed,and MASSIVE ones at that depending on the algae volume relative to the fuel volume able to be extracted from it. We need ponds for fish,land for farming. I am hopeful but do not think that algae farms is the best option for producing globally satisfying portions of fuel. Compared to biogas and diesel which depend on things that are readily available on a massive scale(waste which humans are good at producing). Algae depends on you growing it,filtering it,living it. Can anyone share their views,I am no global expert,these are just my views.

Sunniest place on earth is my hometown of Yuma AZ. One time the pool didn't get clean for a month, was in the shallow end when draining pool. Slipped. Ridiculous slip and slide action! @enticed2zeitgeist Agreed. I do know that Tesla patented a lot of his inventions and made those patents publicly available. Not meaning to tout Tesla but you get my point. Protecting the publicly availability of the information should be crucial IMHO.

@Ahlywog I'm not 100% confident either. My understanding though is the information is released into the public domain before the knowledge is patented it is considered public property. Which means no one can really make copious amounts of money on it, which is good for the public which is what the world needs right now.

Hemp oil comes from the seeds the amount of oil you get from hemp seeds is minimal and only used for medicinal purposes.. believe me i grow hemp..

True is sounds good, but it seems to me it would be compatible only with engines designed to run on 100% ethanol. We need something renewable, affordable, and compatible with our oil engines.

I lean more to electric vehicles but hemp and algae derived biodiesel can go a long way to solving issues of climate change and pollution. Besides it keeps money out of the hands of regimes that fund terrorism. Internal combustion vehicles will be on the road for easily another ten years. By that time conventional easy to get inexpensive oil would have peaked.

Bio mass can create "gas" this is true... but has very little lipid component that is needed for "oil" that you claimed in your previous statement.. And hemp is not marijuana .... Nice try tho

Driving on the stuff, huh? See, I couldn't afford $25-$30 per gal. for fuel, don't have that kind of money to burn like you I guess ...You live in Europe? I live here on the north American continent, at Maricopa county, Arizona--USA;. $5 per gallon of gasoline, tops...so far. Maybe when gasoline here reaches that $25-$30 per gal., maybe it will be a viable alternative then. :/
