As far as I understand it (my dad was a firearms instructor). The difference between a shell\cartridge and a bullet
ound comes down to the casing that holds the different parts and what they are fired from. They generally (and very basic terms) have the round (metal bit) the charge (explosive bit) and the detonator (the bit the gun hits at the bottom). Shells have the round and explosive all contained in the plastic tube. Bullets only have the charge contained in the metal tube with the bullet exposed at the tip of the round.
Because shells are a sealed unit they can contain different types of shot for different uses. One big ball makes a big hole good for bit game hunting or large targets. Lots of little balls spreads out further and good for lots of damage with less need for precision aiming. There are also shrapnel rounds with shards of metal rather than balls. These are good for shredding things or taking out door hinges.
However this can all change when it gets to their big brother Artillery 😂
