Hey guys! Today I'm diving into a territory of animation that genuinely scares me because of how bad it is. Goodtimes Home Video is a now defunct company that made several direct to video films that were blatant rip offs of classic disney films.
I've wanted to cover their movies (and I use that term loosely) for a while now and I decided to start with their version of Beauty and the Beast because it's my favorite fairy tale and disney movie and I chose chaos today. '
I hope you guys like this video and have a good day. Thanks for watching and stay safe! Bye!
My friend's girlfriend grew up in a Christian sect that's basically a cult, and because of that, she wasn't allowed to watch normal stuff like Disney but she did watch these kinds of knock-off movies. She only realized a few years ago how warped her sense of pop culture is because she was having a movie night with friends and was all excited to watch The Little Mermaid, only to be like, wait what the hell is this movie? She had no idea she was even missing out on the real thing.
Oh that's so sad! I was raised in the church but even I got Disney movies 😂
And people wonder why I'm consistently down on mainstream denominations.
If you’re interested, Phelan Porteous reviews tons of Good Times movies on his channel and uses Beauty’s dad as a recurring comic character 😂
That's amazing! I will have to check out his channel! 😂
“HEEEEEEEEEEEE”
I was gonna tell her that honestly. But mentioning of Phelous, he also covered the Britannica version of "Beauty and the Beast" that featured Pat Morita of "The Karate Kid". Since I grew up with two of it's episodes, maybe you can check those out as well.
“And look at my daughters, they got caught in the rain. They’re completely useless now”
Omg I thought of Phelous too
“They’re completely useless now”
*tosses self in trash pile”
Phelous calls him "Old Man".
14:26 We fans of Phelous call him... "Old Man".
😂😂😂😂
“He’s completely useless now!”
HeEeeeeeeeEEEEEEE
I knew someone was going to mention him... which means it looks like, he was expected! HEEEEEEEEEE
Beauty's family names reminded me of my favourite gag format:
"These are my children; Alexander, Caesar, Bouddica, and Erwin."
"These are my children; Devastation, Terror, Agony, and Jessica."
Beauty's family is functionally the inverse of "These are my children; Wit, Thrift, Kindness, Strength, and Margaret."
TV tropes calls this trope odd name out
The ones in the middle are probably Baron Harkonnen’s kids
Wow, I never thought I'd see a version of this story where Beauty's dad has an "old man yells at cloud" moment, but here we are! Also, I know the Beast turns into a generic Disney prince knockoff, but he looks specifically like the love child between Gaston and Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid... and I kinda dig it.
Admittedly, I've never watched this movie, but these clips have a similar vibe to the Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics anime - which also had a Beauty and the Beast episode (though the English dub seemed to have some more comedic moments in the series) - and the Grimm's Fairy Tales Storybook series I watched on VHS a lot growing up, so I feel instantly fond of it purely because of my nostalgia. XD
I have that anime on my list to check out so hopefully I can get to that soon. 🙂
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff That one's actually based on one of the Grimm versions, "The Summer and Winter Garden." I was a little shocked that Beauty/Maria's father actually DIED during the course of it, then I read the Grimm version and saw where they got it from.
Goodtimes had some good stuff, they released a lot of old 1950s/60s tv shows on video and Little House on the Prairie episodes. But, I avoided all their animated films that seemed like they were made just to confuse grandparents into buying them and ended up disappointing their grandchildren.
Yeah, they were quite a company. I'm glad to know they put out some decent things.
Yeah, that company is what introduced me to The Lucy Show, Ozzie and Harriet, Jack Benny, and George Burns and Gracie Allen, so I can’t hate them. Though, I’m sure their animated mockbusters caused many kids to hate them with a passion!
@@JarrettBEdwards yeah if this was my version of beauty and the beast as a kid I would have cried 😂
Wait... her name is actually Beauty? The writers really said "Eff it" 😆
Yeah their give a damn was gone...😂
They could have named her Susan and I'd be okay with it
@@daniellel230 I know right? Also Susan is my mom's name so it's a top tier name lol
@@tayyrific947 That actually was her name in the original fairy tale so I can forgive it a little bit. However, it is still really weird and sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the others.
@@shelbymckinney8888 Really? Belle means beauty in french so they just literally translated it I guess lol
I'm happy you made a goodtimes movie. Phelous capitalized off goodtimes. The vhs cover of this film got goodtimes sued by Disney.
Thanks for watching! That's actually really interesting.
“We’re poor-“ *cuts to an ad break*
😅😅 I didn't plan for that but there you go
I love rip offs and knock offs (To a point I have limits) There always so bad but so strange and sometimes so far off from the original it's kind of entertaining to see where they will go. Another great review keep them coming ✨
Thank you! Yeah this was a weird one for sure. 😂
Yet ironically, they end up closer to the original stories that Disney in turn "ripped off", in order to avoid lawsuit with them. For Pete's sake, the DINGO PICTURES one of all the knock offs was one of the few that actually kept Frollo as a member of the church like he was in the original Hunchback of Notre Dame novel.
1:46 Its crazy how THIS really was the version i watched, When i mention to my friends that i havent watched some of the classic Disney movies growing up they were shocked. (Little Mermaid, Lion King, Fantasia, etc.) I grew up with sweet Christian parents but they weren't extreme or anything so my childhood movies consisted of Strawberry Shortcake (I still have my original movies and YES they STILL smell like strawberries), Angelina Ballerina, Barbie classics, and Ruby and Max. Not much disney stuff but i still cherish my childhood. I randomly remembered i grew up on this film because of that ONE SONG that plays. I still remembered the melody because of how many times i watched it. Great Video Essay! Subscribed! :)
awww, I loved angelina ballerina! Thanks for subscribing and welcome to the channel. :)
also why do fairy tales hate step sisters so much there's a conspiracy here
It is a very strange trend they have going on...
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff dont forgot stepmoms
Divorcing/ re-marrying way back when was a big no-no. So evil Stepsisters and Stepmothers are like secretly "witches" or a sociopath.
In the original story by Madan De Villeneuve, the wealthy merchant of rich port city has six sons and six daughters, of which the youngest daughter is the most beautiful and all the other siblings are spoiled and selfish, but not mean and evil. Unfortunately, they lose their property in a fire and their wealth when their merchant ships sink in a storm, so they flee the city in shame to a mansion in the countryside. There the youngest daughter falls in love with simple rural life because it changed her siblings into better persons and returning to the city starts to worry her, especially when their merchant father receives a message that one of the ships managed to escape the storm and is now waiting in the harbor to be registered. Unfortunately, the ship and its cargo are seized because the merchant has had a bankruptcy and on the way back, the merchant gets lost in a winter snowstorm and ends up in an abandoned castle in the middle of the forest surrounded by a green and lush orange garden. And from the castle garden, the merchant picks a rose for his youngest daughter, which the beast doesn't like because he really loves his roses which were the only hope in the beast's life.
That was definitely his version of "at least it can't get any worse" 🤣 no one else had ever wondered 50ft off the path and discovered the magical forest castle
Right?? It's a pretty hard to miss structure 🤣
I remember watching that version of beauty and the beast as a kid and I absolutely despise it as a kid and I still do even at 17
Yeah, it's certainly rough. and it's a shame because I love beauty and the beast. 😭
Me too
I used to love this movie when I was younger 😭

As someone who grew up watching this movie on cd, I appreciate this video so much
Aw, I'm so glad!! Thank you for watching!!
Sweet Jeebus, it took me a long time to realise that the Beast in this cartoon isn't wearing pants. Did they ever show him below the waist after he transformed into a normal dude?

Golden Films did this too. When I was a kid waiting for Don Bluth's _Anastasia_ to hit video, I watched their sh!tty knockoff with my baby brother. He really enjoyed the talking birds.

I know, they kept this one close to the original but it's super rough all around. 😅

Beauty’s father is such a meme
in the original French tale she had two brothers and two sisters, and her father, the brothers and sisters were selfish and lied beauty to help them and salve all their problems. look at the non Disney musical telling from canon video
Oh yeah this version is actually much closer to the original I will give it that.
You ought to review the one that features the voices of Claire Bloom and Michael York. That one's based on a picture-book version by Mercer and Marianna Mayer, though the animation doesn't really resemble Mercer Mayer's artwork for the book. It was featured on one of those after-school special anthologies that promoted reading--there'd be a live-action frame story that would feature three or four animated adaptations of kid-lit. This one was about "Misunderstood Monsters."
Interesting, I'll give it a look. 🙂
This video gives me so much comfort, I love your commentary and interpretation of the knock off version, I never saw the knock off version, I didn't even realise they did one till you made this video but I love beauty and the best, the Knock off is a bit megh but I always like to see different versions of things for comparison 😊

Technically, the Disney version is the knock off. This, while the animation is old fashioned, is the original story...
Agreed, I know this one is more accurate I just mean it's a knock off of the Disney one specifically since it came out just a year after and clearly wants to capitalize on that. Disney took liberties but it isn't a knockoff, just an adaptation.
I mean, at least it's pushing back against Disney's monopoly and their copyright practices...
though, I agree that I'm gettin' some r/niceguy vibes from this version of Beast
Also, you should cover the "mockbusters" by The Asylum. so, Transmorphers, Avengers Grimm
Oooh, that's a great idea! I'll definitely have to do that at some point!
Funny thing about Disney's copyright practices. Apparently when Goodtimes Home Video released there version of Aladdin, Disney whipped a lawsuit on the company claiming that Goodtimes vhs packaging for the film deliberately imitated the style of the images used by Disney by to promote there version released in 1992, thereby deceiving consumers into thinking they were buying the Disney film(which had not come out on home video yet). The court dismissed the suite on the grounds that Aladdin was a public domain work and the GoodTimes packaging was distinct enough from Disney's images. Look it up and you will see what I'm talking about.

Great cup!!!
Goodtimes loves using copyright-friendly classical music that doesn't even fit the situation! Because why not be lazy, and obvious?
The narrative of this movie is confusing, for one they want us to believe beauty is a nice girl whose unselfish like her sisters, but only after does she receive some material things does she start to love or like the beast and this is after being “poor”
Part of me wonders if beauty was doing all this charity work to flex on the lower classes or for some kind of reward in the end. Which she gets.
Maybe everyone thinks of her as nice is because of her beauty, and for all we know beauty is a nickname she kept insisting everyone call her that.
And let’s not forget she wanted a rose in winter, something very expensive.
Of course she could of requested it because she doesn’t think her farther will find it but their dialogue after makes me think she’s either an idiot or a very selfish person.
Also the whole “beast is kind and gentle?” but makes me laugh, because the beast straight up tried to kill or threatened to kill her father and her that seems the opposite of nice or maybe she was mad her father sold her out.
Also part of me wonders if beauty father is doing some shady stuff, not only does he claim to know the “thieves” at the beginning while insisting their not but he also breaks into someone house eats their food and steals their expensive roses and basically sort of guilt trips his daughter into dying in his place. And he also insists he won’t cheat anyone, which as you stated sounds like his is planning too.
I’m starting think beauty father hired these “thieves” to wreck his cargo for some kind of insurance scam or something.
Yeah beauty and the beast is a beautiful story and my favorite fairy tale when told correctly but man did they miss the mark with this one. It goes to show that tiny changes when made without purpose can damage the final product. Like for example, in many versions of the story it's actually autumn not winter which makes beauty's request very reasonable. And the beast being mad that her father trespassed period makes it way easier to sympathize with him than when he's mad about one single rose. Plus in some versions he only throws him in the dungeon when killing him for his crimes was common in that period so it makes him seem more like someone trying to go easy on her dad (who doesn't want beauty to take his place) rather than complete vindictive.
30:53
