    If I recall correctly, Sadistic Desire was written by the main guitarist, hide. He had a very successful solo career and released three great albums. I would recommend those as well, he had a very versatile style of song writing and on his solo stuff he goes into so many different genres while remaining coherent its crazy. And he played most of the instruments himself as well I think. Great talent.
    Shame about Blue Blood, its my favourite album by them. Maybe Jealousy would be ok to react to?
    Anyway, thanks for the reaction.

      Hide sang, played the guitar and bass (only on Psyence and part of Ja,Zoo) but he had a pretty amazing bunch of people supporting him live and in the studio. He was talented nonetheless ;). There are also a couple of cover songs on his albums. "Hide your Face" is amazing. "Ja, Zoo" was released after hides death and he had only finished one third of the albums songs during the time...sadly you can feel how the crew wanted to release the album as soon as possible after his death. It still has some of his greatest hits though (Pink Spider, Rocket Dive, Ever Free etc).

    Thank you! This was released on Yoshiki's independent label, so it's totally understandable, Yoshiki did all the production with a very small budget. Something impressive, this was the first indie album of any music genre to chart in the main japanese top 20.
    A shame about, Blue Blood, it has the superior version of Kurenai in japanese, the finished version of Unfinished and the bombastic 12 minutes of Rose of Pain, maybe next month you can listen off camera and review it :)
    Since you mentioned the black album, when X Japan was recording Jealousy and Art of Life in 1990-1991 they were using the same studio as Metallica but Yoshiki got fed up, so he bought the studio and kicked out Metallica LOL

    X Japan the god fathers of visual kei and jrock. You should watch We are X documentary. Got the dvd as a gift. It was so emotional to see and understand their story, in how far they've come as a band. Love listening to the album with you.

    14:35 Yoshiki (who leads the band) wanted the X Japan to eventually reach the U.S. market; that's always been his dream so he had Toshi sing lyrics in Japanese and English. Yoshiki went through several hours of learning English every week.

    THE DRUMS. Also, they re-recorded Kurenai in Japanese and with a much more symphonic feel on their next album, Blue Blood. They also finished "Unfinished" as the final track on it, in a finished form, although they kept the title "Unfinished", and it was the last song they played over the PA after the encore at their final show (before getting back together without hide in 2007), because it fit Yoshiki's feeling perfectly, that they were unfinished (their breakup is a nightmare of a story).

    • @Baldmann
      @Baldmann  6 років тому +10

      I wish I could have done Blue Blood. But I think it would get taken down. I enjoyed how unfinished ended. I will have to read up on the break up of the band, or pick up a copy of We Are X.

    Just finally got round to learning Sadistic Desire and it is such a fun song to play if you love chuggy palm muted 80s stuff. I have been living in Japan for about 10 years now and most Japanese people seem to know Kurenai but nobody but X fans seem to know much else.

    I really like the rough sound of this album. It's really sad that you couldn't react to Blue Blood due to copyright issues. Please listen to it in your own time, or in bits and pieces of live versions here on the channel. It's a fantastic record.
    I saw some people suggesting Gauze from Dir en grey. If you're interested in the beginnings you shouldn't miss MISSA! It was their first record as Dir en grey and you can actually hear the transition from La:Sadies to Dir en grey (La:Sadies was their former, indie band. It was the same line up except for Toshiya who joined the band when their bassist Kisaki left because he didn't want to go major. They released MISSA as Dir en grey in 1997. Two years later Yoshiki produced their first singles and the rest, as they say, is history ^^). That being said, they don't have a bad album and they all sound different from each other (hell, I remember the transition from Macabre to Kisou...they sounded SO different. I have strong emotions about both records. Macabre might be one of their darkest albums, Kisou is certainly the most fun ^^). I don't listen to The Marrow of the Bone that often, but I like the songs separately and it has my favourite Live DVD "The Rose Trims Again".
    I'm exited about what you'll pick^^
    Have a great day and thanks so much again for the march madness!

    I loved your comments about modern record production because I’m in the same boat as you. I like when I can hear the human element in a recording, all the natural dynamics and tempo shifts you would expect from just pure, raw playing without any studio gimmicks. I think albums like Dir en grey’s Dum Spiro Spero and Arche, and Metallica’s Hardwired suffer from the modern recording practices. These albums sound like a bunch of guys that came in and recorded their parts separately, then those parts were lined up perfectly in post. They don’t sound organic at all, and that doesn’t take away from the songwriting or the performances, but you just get sort of a cold feeling from them.

    • @Baldmann
      @Baldmann  6 років тому +2

      I agree with you. Hardwired sounded dead, and uninspired. Though I have felt that way about every Metallica record since Saint Anger. Billy Sheehan posted up the isolated vocals of Eric from Mr Big's "To Be With you." It's inspiring to hear a vocal performance like that on tape, knowing he had to nail it, as it was still analog. Studio tricks are great,and their are still great records coming out these days, but I do feel like some just sound phoned in.

      Most of the songs are on UA-cam. There just isnt a playlist or full album upload. Also the album was released on Gan-Shin Records in Europe, same as for most Dir En Grey releases. The Japanese label was a small indie label. I dont think there will be any copyright issues, but its your time and channel. Gonna respect your choice.

    Fun facts;1. The piano in the beginning of Alive is a modification of Moonlight Sonata
    2. Un-finished was added on at the last minute because Yoshiki felt that the album didn't have the right song to end it with. Ergo, he made Un-finished so it's literally unfinished until their second album Blue Blood.
