The more I consume of King's work, the more I am fascinated to find the little inklings that formed the "I Have a Dream" speech.

Love, has always been-and continues to be-the answer. This Brother was truly a Leader.

Violence and force are never the answer. You never convince someone with force but only make them submit out of fear, which is never a good foundation to build a world together going forward on. When convinced using love, kindness and understanding, people will cooperate and work together. Martin Luther King knew this, he knew more than most people because his answer was love and understanding; the true answer. The whole world would do well to learn the great lessons that this wonderful person was teaching us when he was sharing his wisdom through his speeches. What an inspiring hero and role model.

I remember listening to a biography written by his wife, Sister Coretta. She talked about the challenges of addressing the heartbreaking tribulations suffered by many with whom he was speaking without stirring the pain & anger up into violence. That sometimes he got so concerned about it, he could no longer find the right words. She said when that happened, he took it to the Lord in prayer. Ask God to simply use him as a mouthpiece for what needed to be said.
Fwiw & hope after all these years I haven't mangled her message.

This has never been more relevant. In the words of MLK III, “There is no celebration of MLK without voting rights legislation”.

The Supreme court decision he speaks of: May 17, 1954 - Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas.

Dr. King embodied Jesus of Nazareth's Sermon on the Mount; he committed everything--Coretta Scott King, too--to subverting hate and violence with agape love and non-retaliatory action. The quotes he used re: Caesar on the throne and Christ on a Roman cross bring up, for me, images of the Iowa primaries in 2024. His encouragement not to lose heart, as someone noted below, is just as timely.

We will stand on God's word, which is right. Jesus Christ is God Almighty and He is the only way to heaven. Put your faith in Jesus Christ alone.

I mean, none of this happened so was this a wasted speech? Where have we gotten? What have we gotten? We DID NOT place the right people in place, but maybe that's because the right people didn't run, I don't know, I just know NOTHING HAS CHANGED...

Change is slow, painful, and arduous. It does seem like things have gotten worse in some ways. However, I’m a white man and a former police officer. I am also a recovering addict. During Narcotics Anonymous meetings, I have talked about Dr. King and how some of his sermons, specifically “The Drum Major Instinct” and “Love Your Enemies” applied to my own life and recovery. I shared his message as it had helped me and I hoped it would help others. I was sharing truth…..and in truth. It is said one may find God. An assassin’s bullet couldn’t stop Dr. King’s message being carried by me 60 years later. I hear your frustration. I’m glad that like me, you are here appreciating Dr. King. Strangely, my daughter was born on the same day Dr. King was murdered. In this speech, Dr. King did tell his followers…..who had all suffered greatly, “we must love” and “never give up”. His speech is about courage, hope, love, and God. My own life has improved as I have been applying Dr. King’s teachings to my own life. He is part of my recovery story and he helped to open my own heart. I am a semblance of the change he hoped for. Deus vult.

Most of us have the right to vote. We don't face the level of violence from folks who look different from us that they did in the 50's. Things have changed, and some have become a different type of oppression. We are much more powerful than we think. Some folks are afraid we'll realize that.
