- When it comes to resiliency, my brothers Jim and Gary were the Daily Double. My brother Gary not only overcame challenges, but he also supported and encouraged me more than anyone in my life.
This blog continues my story, Cancer Cured, Chapter III, the 7th and final excerpt from this chapter. It focuses again on resiliency, this time, my brother Gary.
Gary was born a year and 9 months before me.
Because we were so close in age, we naturally did a lot together. He inspired my love of sports and history.
Gary wasn’t blessed with the height the creator had provided me, yet it didn’t prevent him from playing with passion and determination. He inspired my competitive nature, both by physically challenging me, and later by encouraging my development by sharing insights from others that helped me be encouraged, and not get a big head.
In his last years of life, when his health robbed him of his dignity and independence, he showed not only resilience, but humility, and acceptance. Despite his pain and suffering the nurses and doctors at the University of Wisconsin hospital paid tribute to him at his funeral.
A good friend of Gary’s, Tom Gross, delivered an eloquent tribute to Gary’s vision, and care for the town he grew up in, Princeton, Wisconsin. Like George Bailey, in It’s a Wonderful Life, my brother Gary was dedicated to the history and heritage of his community.
“It’s a Wonderful Life” is one of my favorite Christmas movies probably because it reminds me of my brother Gary’s resilience, dedication, and passion for life!
