Excellent ideas! Both of my local Walmarts have camping sections but I still shop in other departments for some items. Something else I invested in was a bunch of clothes made specifically for fishermen. I have several pairs of pants and several shirts and they are so easy to wash, never get wrinkles, and you can literally squish them into a ball in your backpack and they still look good when you pull them out. They are super lightweight and cool in the hoter months. I typically find them in the men's department but Walmart has them way cheaper than, say, Academy. They can be a bit of an investment but we do a lot of warm weather camping and they have served me well for years.

🤫! You're giving away my secrets 😅. You're so right about the "other" isles being a camper's goldmine! Even the Baby isles have some great items for camping. And those end isles near the pharmacy with all the miniature size items! I always head there. Good video!

Those ear plugs are invaluable if you camp in whip-r-will country. Those birds can run a night in the forest. Same thing goes for crows in the morning, if you're a late sleeper. Maybe avoid using them in bear country though.😊
Most Campgrounds DO allow the heat treated wood that is sold in those bundles. There will be a certification on the package somewhere. In all National Forests, that I'm aware of, the ONLY firewood that you can bring from home is the certified variety. There are a number of insects, like the Emerald Ash Borer that are transported in cut wood and will infect new forest growth. The kiln drying kills the bugs and their larvae. Expect to have your wood actually checked. They are very serious about this issue.
Those BBQ tongs are great to take camping, if you're going to have a campfire. They do a really good job of picking up and returning burning twigs and coals that tumble out of the fire and the Heavier made ones can actually manipulate decent sized logs. The longer the better and just avoid rubber tips and grips. Paint them white if you want to be able to spot them in the dark as the fire dies down. Depending on the construction, the grill burger flippers and be used as a shovel for ash management in your firepit. I don't have a problem using my grilling tools as firepit tools, but if you do, they are cheap enough that you can have a dedicated set for the firepit.
I don't think you mentioned plastic tarps in the hardware section. And on that same note, a lot can be protected from rain with contractor trash bags and shower curtain liners from the housewares aisle. Beach style umbrellas can be used to help protect your campfire from being extinguished from rain. Yoga mats from the exercise equipment section will make a decent sleep mat in a pinch. And if you forgot your sleeping bag a quilt or a few fleece blankets can save the day.

Great videos and ideas. If I can add a suggestion. I put the Vaseline and cotton balls in an medicine container. Helps in case the ziploc bag breaks. I also use the medicine bottles to lots of other small items, like safety pins, tweezers, small sewing kit etc.

Paracord for sure. But also masonry cord makes great guy lines. And waterskiing rope can be used to hang a hammock.
Also go to the fabric dept and look for odds and ends of nylon. It is very inexpensive, packs light and is durable. Sometimes you can even get the silicone impregnated kind that is used to make UL gear. You can sew it into little drawstring bags etc. but my fav is just to get a couple yards of it or even 2 pieces and put it to work...remember all the ways you can use a military poncho? Pretty much the same. Don't even need to seam seal it. Uses include walling off your tarp shelter on the side or end (beak) in bad weather. Pack cover, wrap around you like a poncho. Sit on it like a picnic blanket or play area for a child. Dump gear on it to organize without losing things in the grass. Pitch it as a tarp, awning and or sun shade. Lay on it (ground cover), can string it up as a hammock for gear, pet, or small child. Boost your temp rating or moisture proofing of your sleep gear. Load it with firewood and carry with it. String up a curtain for privacy around your shower\bathroom\dressing area. You can even lay all your stuff on it and parcel wrap it with p cord and fashion it into an over the shoulder pack. Literally thousands of uses...it's a wall, door, floor, ceiling, table, blanket, bag. In some cases is not meant to permanently replace a piece of gear but excellent to cover a host of emergencies and can be used all day for this and that.
You can also look in the school supplies area for a plastic pocket folder to use as a cutting board.
Fav camping game....Yahtzee, just need 5 dice and write out a score card on a little note pad.
Altoid cans for storing and organizing anything.

Great Video. The Lodge cast iron pizza pan is fantastic. I got it because my camper's gas oven would burn the pizza crust. The plastic cutlery is a fantastic deal. They don't hold up to heat very well, so have metal utensils for cooking. For storage, I use Bauer stackable tool boxes from Harbor Freight. Walmart does have a stackable tool system in the Hart line, I just happened to catch the Bauer on sale. The best camping item I think Walmart has is the Hart 5 gallon cordless sprayer. It takes Hart power tool batteries. I think it's only available online though.

Great vid with some thinking outside of the box ideas. One thing about the paracord though. Even though the label says 550 paracord, it's not true 550. It says on the label that it's only 110 pound test. So if you're using it for a hammock or something else that needs to support a lot of weight, you'll need to double up or even triple up on it.

    • @WhereWeWild
      @WhereWeWild  20 днів тому

Thanks man appreciate it! 👊🏽😃 And yeah that’s a great great point and good for people to know for sure. 550 is the static load, and it should hold pretty close to that in a fixed or “static” position, but the “working load” on 550 is usually like 110-150ish depending on quality, and a hammock is a great example of looking at that working load rating because it’s that sudden drop type movement when you get on a hammock that can cause it to snap at the working load, so for jobs like that you definitely want to get a stronger line or double up like you said. Great point. Thanks for pointing it out. 👊🏽😎🤙🏽

I've been basically disappointed in the camping gear at Walmart. A tent, the zipper was done in a weekend.. The tote bag for my poncho ripped the stitches. The duct tape, isn't sticking. Foam mattress was like sleeping on the ground.. The 1lb propane tanks don't last very long. The 20,000mah power bank doesn't fast charge, and barely can charge my phone turned off..

You may be able to buy tarps in hardware/automotive departments. Alternative bedding may be foam pads in the excersize/sports section with the balls and yoga gear. Also, check out the bicycle 🚲 section. Do you have a sports section? It may not be a "camping" ⛺ department per se, but there's also the fishing 🎣 department. If you only have groceries at your Walmart, there's always the $🌳. Cheap & junky, but sometimes that's all you need. A shower curtain may be used for: 1). A poncho 2). Dragging heavy items over snow or non-abrasive surface, like open field where there is mostly grass/weeds. 3.) An overnight shelter/lean-to, altho the holes may need to be reinforced.
4.) An under-bedding/sleeping bag vapor barrier to keep damp from soaking your bedding. 5.) An in-between the covers air barrier if it's especially windy & frigid weather. On & on I could go. And so many products have multiple uses.

  • @SaratogaontheAT

Just a note. The paracord they sell in the camping isle is "real" paracord. That is why it cost more. Real 550 paracord is rated for 550lbs. of strength. Real paracord has 7 inner nylon strands that are each rated at 50lbs. The outer sheath is rated at 200lbs. Therefore 7 strands X 50lbs. = 350lbs. + The outer sheath which is 200lbs. = a total of 550lbs. That is where 550 paracord got it's name from. Real paracord can have the 7 strands pulled apart for: sewing, fishing line, small game traps etc. The 550 paracord they sell in hardware looks like paracord from the outside but is rated at 80lbs and it is a solid core under the outer sheath. Does it make a difference for clothes line, tarp setup or general use? No but it's not real paracord and calling it 550 paracord is deceptive.

Yeah paracord is tricky. Actually believe it or not that stuff does have the 7 strands inside of it but if you look closely at the package it says 110lb max load. This is because the static load rating on paracord is different from the working load rating. So like if 550 is tied to something fixed and still or “static” it can hold 550lbs ish depending on quality, but if it’s yanked hard quickly like for repelling, or jumping on a hammock, or something like that it’s most likely going to snap at it’s working load. Which on 550 is usually around 100-150lbs depending on quality. So for any of those types of jobs you want to go with a thicker 1100 paracord say for example where the working load would be around 200-300lbs. Or you can double or triple up on your 550. 😊🤙🏽

Let's be realistic.... Cheaper yes but definitely not 1/2 the price.... I own a few things shown like the knife spoon and fork and the plastic dishes and bowls and while prices have gone up slightly they certainly weren't half the cost..... Actually the plates/ bowls are the same price they have always been

Can’t really think of one product in this video where I’d be worried about quality 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 Plastic bins, bottles and bowls, pool noodles, Fritos, rice, lighters, wood, charcoal, rope, duct tape, fire extinguishers, foil, garbage bags, board games??? Lol like what type of quality you looking for out of that kind of stuff? 😃 Haha and the bigger stuff like the Lodge cast irons and Aeropress are solid quality. 😎🤙🏽

All these big "box stores" and internet shopping have been the downfall of America's small businesses.
I've said for years that we chase cheapest prices (usually junk imo) and allow these big chains to corner the market.
They've pretty much got it done in our small towns.
Grocery stores, lumber yards and hardware stores are gone.
We're now stuck with foreign made junk, the prices go up every day and customer service is non-existent.
    We reap what we sow.

@@timarcher1524 Yeah it’s pretty crazy to think about. I remember as a kid growing up in a small town there were tons of little shops, one in particular was this awesome little sporting goods store that some family friends owned and they had to shut it down once they started opening the big sporting goods stores nearby like Sports Authority or Dick’s. Can’t even imagine how anyone manages to keeps a small store like that open today. Now, some of those BIG stores that replaced the small stores long ago are having to close because they are the ones who can’t compete now with sites like Amazon. Pretty nuts.
