Modern life has a way of bringing you down, and making you feel like you aren't enough....
“Any Day Now” was written to inspire all people to go through life pursuing their goals to the fullest. Not only with great determination, but great patience as well.
Our intention was to make the lyrics, beats, and sounds, picturesque and touching; but with an edge.
We hope that this song gives you the inner feeling of a wall coming down, or a new wave coming into your life to destroy your previous limitations (self imposed or otherwise).

Calvin is Cal Schenkel, the designer of the cover of a number of Zappa albums since 1967; including this one. The title of the song refers to an episode where Cal, driving to work, picked up a couple of Hitchhikers. The couple were arguing most of the way. Cal arrived at his office, parked the car, but the hitchhikers were still arguing with each other about where to eat. Cal just left them, went to his office and occasionally checked through his window if they were still there in his car. Apparently the gal went to buy some sandwiches, the couple ate in his car and at some point Cal checked again and they were gone. Cal told this weird story to Frank and he used it as lyrics and title for this written piece. That's what I know about it. Maybe someone else might have more details to offer.
That's it. You got it.
😂that’s some story. Thanks for sharing it with us😂
@@SightAfterDark Many Zappa songs have a story behind them, some are true like this one and some are made up by other people, like Willie the Pimp. A part of the 200 Motels movie was Zappa spying on the band members and using their stories and actions to create songs that he forced the band to play. It's largely true as he had band members hide tape recorders to record other band members
Nice, thanks! I knew that from somewhere but not in such details. FZ was known for his devastating honesty in his life... and in his music. As Steve Vai also mentioned, one should be careful what secret they share with Frank because it would no longer be a secret :) One more reason to like him, resp. his music
In order of what albums I listen to most of the Zappa catalog 1- Hot Rats - 2 - This album, The Grand Wazoo - 3 - Bongo Fury. I own most of his stuff, but nowadays get most of my Zappa needs fulfilled right here at SAD. Honorable mention goes to Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar. Happy Veterans Day to all my fellow vets out there!
We love that we’re part of the list Chaz! Happy Veterans Day to you and thank you for your service 🇺🇸 ❤️!
Hope you had a Happy Veterans' Day Chaz! Thank you for your service. Appreciate you bro.
Happy Veterans Day Chaz!
I'm not a vet, but my dad was an AF pilot in WWII and Korea (he was stationed at Tachikawa AFB, and I was born in Japan). He was grounded permanently after coming down with cancer, in spite of a successful operation, and then assigned to the Titan Missile Silos in Tucson. He did not agree with our involvement in Vietnam, and continually encouraged me to go to college and enroll in ROTC so I wouldn't become cannon fodder. College was always in my plans, and ROTC became moot as my first year of eligibility coincided with the last year of the draft, and my number was in the 220s. While I didn't feel the military was right for me, I still respect the hell out of those that choose to serve.
@HisboiLRoi Thanks Elroy! Very nice comment, my man.
During the improvisational part (which also includes a Greggery Peccary quote) the recognisable soloists are Don Preston, Bruce Fowler and percussionist Bob Zimmiti.
The two times it was performed live, it was instrumental (except for someone - Marquez? - singing two lines during the improv section).
Bruce Fowler does appear on The Grand Wazoo. There are three trombone players listed on this track: Billy Byers, Ken Shroyer & Ernie Tack. Also, there are two percussionists: Bob Zimmitti & Alan Estes.
i didn't really get into the Frankster until maybe 10-15 years ago, way past when I had first heard about him, but, to be honest, there was not much of his music out there, unless it was the more radio friendly songs, like those you'd find on Over-Nite Sensation or Apostrophe. Also, Frank was an oddity. He was a musician, he did form bands, but bottom line the guy was a composer and very, if I may, a serious musician, at least he took his composing and playing, getting it right, seriously. As I went over his catalogue time and again, it became evident to me that this was the most innovative, prolific, diverse, and important composer we've ever had. RIP, big guy.
What an album! Music AND artwork (Cal(vin) Schenkel is the artist)! (Drummer: Aynsley Dunbar) I love the chaotic parts, since you always know there's something climactic coming.
I was so lucky ,my oldest brother brought every zappa album home ,starting from we're only in it for the money, his 3rd
Hace tiempo que no los visitaba, excuse me. Este tema es una genialidad. Abrazos desde Chile (south América).
Gracias a ti por tu comentario! Abrazos❤️!
Fav album cover? Well, I absolutely adore the style on Them or Us.
my friend's parents played on this album. her name is stephanie mcnabb and she plays flute for the san francisco opera. when she disclosed this info to me i wouldn't fucking leave her alone for weeks asking her for any zappa info i could glean. we often ate in the dark.
You may watch or react to Barcelona Live from 1988 you can watch his guitar playing at close up
The story goes that Cal Schenkel, who did a lot of Zappa's covers, was driving from Frank's house to the studio, in a 1959 Jaguar he borrowed from Frank, who got it from Captain Beefheart, and while at a red light, a couple of hippies got into the car uninvited. They never spoke, and remained in the car while Cal went into the studio. An hour or two later, the hitch hikers went into a supper market, returned and made sandwiches which they ate in the back seat before leaving.l
So Frank created a tune.
Dumb All Over would be the most appropriate Zappa song at the moment, taking into account the state of the world generally and the current conditions in America specifically. Guess the causal relationship between the two. But this song IS appropriate in a beautifully depressing way.
Facts
Weird scenario....Cal Schenkel arrives with two young hitch hikers he picked up on the way over to the band...They must have seen the unsightly band and disappeared...Maybe if P.diddy was there they would have been distilled into a little bottle with a ''.CgHgNO3'' label on the bottle
I want to know where the hitchhiker's went !
this album and the previous, Waka/Jawaka marked Frank's return to adulthood after 2 dreadful "lost years". Not my favourite track but like both albums, very jazz orientated.
Good pick Wayne.
Good reaction.
Thanks Paul!
