    When you consider Ridley Scott's career, it really is amazing. The guy is 86-years old and not only still making movies, but still making large-scale epics like Gladiator II and Napoleon. Furthermore, he is very prolific. There are no long gaps in his career where he disappeared and didn't make any movies. It's been steady output from 1977 to the present. And lastly, unlike some directors who had sharp declines later in their careers, he has continued to work at a high level all the way to the present day.

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah, Scott is what I consider a "working man's" director. Here's a guy that gets up every day, puts in the work, then comes back the next day to do it all over again. You never hear about drama or celebrity stuff with him: it's always what's he working on now, what's he working on next. I think that's also why he has a traditional up-and-down kind of career. He has years that are great and years that aren't but, no matter what, he's back at it with a new film the next year. He's remained remarkably consistent for the decades and, for his troubles, has several iconic works.

      @@Syntopikon That's a good summary of the situation. I wonder if he has any plans for retirement or if it's his intention to just have a heart attack one day while sitting in the director's chair. As it stands, if he lives long enough, he can enter Clint Eastwood territory as a director in his 90s who is not only still working but still making good films. (Speaking of Eastwood, if you haven't seen Juror #2, you should check it out when you get a chance.)

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  Місяць тому

      @@sorenpx I don't think he intends to retire just yet lol. He mentioned in a Financial Times article that he knows what his next 3 movies are going to be, and I think he's producing or executive producing like 20 different projects.
      Very good chance he goes the Eastwood route, like you mentioned, and just keeps going until he physically can't. You might enjoy this interview article with him, wherein he invokes Eastwood as his example: www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/ridley-scott-interview-gladiator-2-alien-blade-runner-1236049190/
      Juror No. 2 is definitely on the list to watch!

    Have you ever covered Soviet Films? Yesterday, I watched "War and Peace" (1968) and I was gobsmacked at how incredible it was. After watching it I read up it's Wiki Page and turns out the Soviets spent $60million and lent 2000 Soldiers to the Film's Production. That Battle Scenes are possibly even bigger than Waterloo's. The Film gives you more massive battle's than you'll ever see from a Hollywood Production. I'm 47 years old and never heard a single word about that masterpiece. Crazy thing is it's 100% free to watch in HD on the Soviet Film's "Mosfilm" channel. They uploaded every great Soviet Picture to this channel. I'm not a fan of communism but I am a huge fan of great pictures. Some of these Soviet Classic really need more attention.

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  Місяць тому +4

      I just subbed to Mosfilm on UA-cam a couple days ago, so it's something I want to catch up on. I know of the more traditional work, like Come & See, Andrei Tarkovsky's films, and 1966 War & Peace (which I recently picked up on Criterion), but it's something I definitely need to catch up and form more of thoughtful opinion on.
      I think one thing to know about these films is that, while they were under the Soviet regime, I think a lot of artists themselves were Anti-Soviet. Part of it is just being in the arts and artistic people raging against the machine, but also they just didn't have much choice so they made the best of what they could. There are a LOT of great movies to explore here, though.

    I saw The Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary re-release this year and I still love the film and the prequels. I know they have their detractors, but watching the Prequel and Original trilogies back to back shows a coherent story from beginning to end. Overall, it’s amazing just to see how many directors make a big comeback after having various films that don’t do well back to back to then being on top again or perhaps be in a situation like George Lucas where he took a long break from directing a film before he went back in the directors chair and made three ground breaking films on a technological level that further helped break more boundaries in film from visual effects to making films shot digitally. And while he did have a lot of input on Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi to the point where those films were done like a TV with the Executive Producer being in charge of the production, so while he may not have been listed as a director, he was on set of those films a lot and so his fingerprints are on those films just as much as the four Star Wars films he did direct. While he may not think much of himself as a director, I think he’s an excellent director, especially with the visuals all his films have. He’s one of the best visual storytellers that has ever lived and his films always have a unique look to them. Great video man, keep up the great work!

    Wow I'd never paid attention to just how hit or miss Ridley Scott's career had been. So much back and forth between heavy misses and heavy hits

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  Місяць тому +1

      I think that's part of what makes him an interesting director, though. He takes swings, which necessarily means he has a lot of misses. The guy doesn't play it safe, which I respect.

    I was hit with one of the hardest Deja vu's in the George Miller section. I realized that in a video you made around a month ago about expensive movie mistakes you said the almost same things word for word about George Miller and the Mad Max saga😂 But great video anyways :)

  • @GarfieldRex

    I knew George Miller first because of Babe and then Happy Feet. Then I discovered he made MadMax and was like o.O supreme director for handling such different film tones.

    6:26 when $354 million is considered a box office failure, the entire system is fu@%ed, not just the director.

      If you want something real wild - Rise of Skywalker, which made more than a billion, is considered a financial disappointment. Some budgets are so inflated, even a billion dollar box office isn't enough.

    Ridley Scott doesn’t write. That’s his big caveat. If he makes a bad film, it’s not always his fault. Sometimes the projects he picks just aren’t written well. Other times, they’re butchered in post. And sometimes it is his fault during filming. It’s just what happens when directing is your only job. Many people who only direct have this issue, it’s just that none have directed anything even close to Alien, Blade Runner, or Gladiator (which themselves all had major production issues mind you), let alone all three, so there’s less pressure on them to deliver.

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  Місяць тому +2

      Yeah, Scott's like the opposite of James Cameron or Quentin Tarantino in that they mostly write their own movies, too. Still, he's definitely got a vision. Most directors are lucky to get a few good films, while Scott has no fewer than 2, and one could argue 3, masterpieces, as well as many more enjoyable films.

    • @mg6945
      @mg6945 Місяць тому +1

      @ yeah his style may not be as big and bodacious as his brother’s was, but you definitely know when you’re watching a Ridley Scott film, especially with how his style and the bag of tricks he deploys has evolved over the years. A 2000s R Scott is very different from an 80s, but you still know it’s an R Scott.

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  Місяць тому +1

      @@mg6945 That's the mark of an auteur, I suppose. Agreed that his brother definitely had a more bodacious - and, I think, more easily identifiable style - than Ridley, but both definitely stamped their films as their own.

      Glad you enjoyed it! I think Burton remaining away from Disney is a good bet for now. I think he likes the freedom he'd get elsewhere. I like Disney more than most, but one of their biggest faults - and this has been the case for decades - is desiring way more control over a thing than they should have.

    Gladiator 2 just was released yesterday. I already made plans with my wife to see it tomorrow. I'm a little bit concerned though because it's IMDB Rating is just a 7.0 but It's my Wife's Birthday and she said she wanted to go see it so we're going. We both loved the first Gladiator and we both love Denzel Washington so I'm hoping that the picture was just hate raided by right wingers because they added a black man to the cast of a Roman Picture. Anyway thanks for another great video on great directors.

      I think you're going to have a great time. Looking at the audience score, it seems as though the audience score is 84%, so it seems like a lot of people have enjoyed watching it. I'm looking forward to seeing it sometime this upcoming week as well. As far as I'm concerned, all Denzel Washington movies are a must watch (and I'm reading that he gives one of the best performances of his career).
