As someone who attended these events and as an SCV member this was especially emotional.
All America honored those who died in the Hunley. The ladies in black brought our unit to tears.
Why now are these Americans disgraced?
I adore Charleston and the respect given at this occasion.
I also attended the funeral for this Hunley crew, it was American history and respect at it's finest.
God bless the south and all the crews of the Hunley!
Thanks so much for sharing this video!

I am proud to say I was in the Hunley funeral procession with my son and the 19TN, along with thousands of other reenactors both Blue and Gray..black and white. These were brave men that gave the last full measure, and because of their bravery, ushered in a whole new way of defending our Country, They deserve respect, and got it April 04...and continue to get it from the thousands that visit their graves each year.

Only in America can the brave veterans of the CSA Hunley be treated with the honors they so richly deserve. They served their country well and should always be remembered for the contributions they have made . God bless the men of the CSA Hunley . Although I was not born in the south I am trying to get there as fast as I can .

It is good to see these men got the burial that they deserved. Even if it was a century or so late. Brave is a word that doesn't do justice to what these men were. Wonderful pictures of the procession. I had goose bumps the entire time.

I was there and marched with other submarine veterans. Sure it was touted as the last Confederate funeral. We viewed it as last farewell to those who went down in submarines. Same for those of us who travelled to Russia to attend the Kursk crew funeral. The Sioux had the best description : Honored enemy

It is so nice that they found these soldiers and gave them a proper military burial. These men changed the course of warfare "forever" and were incredibly brave to sign up for this type of duty.

I enjoyed the book and film.
This funeral is fitting and shows great respect to fallen heroes who were still treated today in the manner they would have been familiar with from their own time. RIP
    Thanks for posting........................

Marched in the procession with the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc). We were right behind the Masons in the formation.
Due to the massive length of the formations, we didn't start marching until at least 30 minutes before the lead groups started.
Interesting item is that US flags are not allowed within the Confederate section of the cemetary.
We did not march because they were Confederates. We marched to honor fellow submarine veterans.

Your great plus grandfather was a Union sailor on the Congress prior until after the Battle of Hampton Roads, right? Someone needs to write a biography of him. One of the most fascinating stories ever. He was originally a native of NC, and I always wondered where.

Chance put my family from Massachusetts, on the steps of a building opposite the old slave market in Charleston on the morning of the procession to intern the remains of the Huntley crew.
The shock of seeing massed confederate flags and reenacters was initially hard to take, my first thought was
    “The Union Forever”
Then I remembered when the British raised the Rose warship of Tudor times the memorial service was in the old Latin of the RC church.
When we reburied the Russian sailors recovered from the pacific the service was that of The USSR.
In death you honor them as they lived. That said I believe the only legitimate display of an “Honered Enemy”
flag is in the presence of their remains, during internment or within cemetery grounds.
Anything else dishonors those who died in defense of the Constitution.

Both pro North and pro South advocates need to take a moment, step back and remember that all who fought in The Civil War were human...and just as important...all AMERICANS. Each Union and Confederate soldier is a war hero and should be treated as such.

States' Rights is not a codeword for anything!
It is a term still in use today about the 10th Amendment to the Constitution that clearly states that all powers not designated to the federal government by the first nine amendments to the Bill of Rights are regulated totally to the individual State governments!

  • @darthroden

I absolutely agree with you Dauntless07....venomtrumpet is just a person with a big chip on his shoulder who has no clue what he's talking about.
I was there at the Hunley funeral in April 2005, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't.
There were many defenders of Southern heritage there, and many local Charleston people, both white and black. There was no hatred that day, and nobody had a bad thing to say over the sight of those Stainless banner-draped coffins taking those 8 men to their final rest.

Soldiers & Sailors of that war DESERVE to be buried under the flag they fought under
regardless of contemporary feelings about the symbols of the country they fought for even if the war was over the creation of that country...
I am a northerner and I not only understand and accept that but I will fight for the
honor they deserve against anyone who believes otherwise.
How many people want to argue over an issue they already won against
the dead who cannot argue back?
    Let them have their flag

You are right. You are absolutely right. It was not all about slavery. It was 98.5% about slavery. The other part had to do with the white southern belles fear of losing that mandingo love from the help.

Hmmmm , all the people complainin about the Hunley crew, how about the hootin and hollerin about the brave men of the monitor. That was in the press in a big way. In fact the USS Monitor is being set up as a monument in Newport News, the very town it blockaded. Now is that honor or insult?
PS I don't hold the crew of the Monitor responsible fer where they are being show cased to further the Reconstruction of Southern States.

lets set the record straight, west africa didnt kick us out, we were pow's in an ongoing war ,many of our fellow tribe men are still there and in every village there is a storyteller who recites the village history weekly naming every slave that was taken away so we are remembered but speaking of being kicked out, Europe kicked u out.for yrs they denied u freedom of speech, religion, assembly, bear arms etc. so u hopped on the boat like homeless and rejected children with no where to go.reject

You are rude and ignorant. My people were on both sides of the war, and most of them came from the North originally. Many of us came out of the serfdom of Europe, and no one took care of the serfs! The laborer in the North and South had to fend for himself, and life was tough.

I didn't like that they put on some damn show dressed in that period clothing, its 2014 not 1864 and they were solders show some respect it should have been full military burial.

It was 2004 not 2014. But yes, some people back then used it as an excuse to dress up in period costumes.

    • @rabidspace6951

In the documentary about the CSS Hunley they said they wanted to do the funeral in the period clothing because that's how the first two crews of the Hunley were buried. But I agree show respect to the soldiers and give them a proper military burial.

I am a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy(UDC)and was at that funeral.Myself as well as my friend worked many days sewing our authentic black Confederate dresses made out of special fabric that was ordered along with bloomers, hoop petticote, bonnet with black netting and black gloves that we had trouble finding. The soldiers that marched those near 5 miles were outfitted in Conferderate gray uniforms made out of the wool blend that was common during the War Between the States carrying weapons that would have been used during that time.It was 86 degrees that hot April day;there were first aid stations set up along the route rendering help to those who were not used to the muggy heat of Charleston. The soldiers was buried with full military honors next to the other 2 crews in Magnolia Cemetary beside a small body of water underneath magnificent magnolias draped in Spanish moss. When the bagpiper played Amazing Grace,Taps blown on the trumpet, and the 21 gun salute from Confederate muskets;you could have almost heard a pin drop and men as well as women were wiping tears from their eyes.I have been to many funerals before, this is one I will never forget and I was honored to have taken part in such a special historical event.

this video is a shame, its amazing how whites tell blacks not to dwell on the past of slavery but they go to the extreme of raising $15million to pull a piece of civil war relic out of the abys or should I say "the past" slavery is linked to this and whenever its brought up I will mention it. I prefer by gones to be by gones but many whites refuse to let go of all the pain and hate, they choose to dwell on the past...and even pay their money to do it, Gen.Sherman, where are you??

y do you say i am trying to get revenge? maybe its because you feel so guilty till you feel you ought to be punished? revenge isnt what I want, I only want you and others to stop glorifying the deeds of the southern soldiers and admit that they were misguided blind followers who were wrong, they were on a mission to continue the dispicable act of slavery, if they had won slavery wouldnt have ended till 1945 or 1960 because they were planning on taking it out west before the civil war
