#Askhomesteady : You mentioned in a video before that camels are browsers like goats. How are the camels worm tolerance? What are common ailments to watch out for on a camel? You guys are awesome for going the extra mile for your families health btw!
Oh my goodness!! I made a dream board and on it I added a picture of a camel. I NEVER thought about it actually being possible. I don't have a homestead yes, but You have made my excitement even greater now!!
I LOVE your camels! So fascinating! Looking forward to more videos! The baby playing at the beginning was precious❤️. Love the shout out! Way to go Cathleen!!
WOW....you all are amazing! I am from michigan and I ask you about camels living in the cold and didn’t even know you got your camels from michigan....YAY for my home state❤ I’m happy for everything your family does in this wonderful journey to help with healing needs and I will be praying for your success. Love watching your videos and plan on joining your camel train in a couple of weeks❤
In the desert of the Arabian Peninsula, the summer is very hot, but the winter is very cold, but this is the natural environment and the camels bear the air. It is the miracle of the Lord.
It's a common misconception that the temperatures plummet at night in a desert. 50C at day time and 42C at night. They do target cold in winter if course. In Turkey, Mongolia they have very cold winters with plenty of snow. Camels dont mind cold - what they dont like is wet weather.
Rode camels very often while going to Jr. High in Cairo in 60's. Dad was working in American Embassy so being a teen at the time rode Arabian horses and camels every week for 3 years. They are gentle & living once bonded to their human...we drank camel's milk as we did not have a commissary to purchase groceries. They run very fast which surprises most!
#askhomesteady How old is Millie? How long do camels live? Has Milly had other offspring? How long do they milk before they need to be re-bred? How much does a milking camel milk? and will it be enough for your family or Kay and baby or??? When/ how are you going to re-breed her? If you wait for Solomon to grow up... it seems like that will be years to wait. Have you found a Camel friendly/ knowledgeable veterinarian yet? Glad to see they have learned how to use your new drinkers!
Being in PA the camel is actually back in its indenginous habitat. He was wrong in what he said in the video. Camels are actually indenginous to north America and are originally meant for cold temperatures and snow not just hot desserts. There's a Ted talk on it
The family that had a camel crossing sin on their driveway finally moved moved from Western Washington where the inters are wet to Eastern Washington where the winters a cold but dry.
Of course they can live in the cold....Saudi Arabia actually gets very cold...also, they are incredible for nomadic people because they can go along time with out water.....it’s so amazing that you guys are on this journey!! Congratulations
They will be very warm out of Michigan..Winters here can be brutal!! In Mid Michigan it's not bad, but in the Upper Peninsula wind chill of 20° below zero are very common.
Yes. Camels can live fine in the cold if there is shelter for them. I live in Idaho where there are months of continued-32 degrees. There are camels up the road that do just fine.
Haven't watched this video yet but about 15 years ago I was traveling from Indiana to Florida in December during a snowstorm. As I passed through southern indiana, in the distance, through the snowflakes I spied a camel in a pasture. Needless to say, I nearly wrecked my vehicle as I had never seen a camel in real life before, much less one in a pasture, in Indiana, in the snow. So, I'm figuring they will be fine!😁
#askhomesteady Please can you give a dog update on all the dogs you have. And my question is do both of your German shepherds work together to protect and patrol your livestock, land and family?
#AskHomesteady I am considering buying a camel and have the option of getting one sourced from feral populations of inland Australia (as I'm in Aus) or one from a breeder. I figured that a captive bred camel would have better records in terms of health and milk, but the sellers of the rehabilitated feral camels are very experienced and have been helpful mentors. What are your thoughts on this? Love your podcast and channel, keep up the great work.
I have a some questions. As far as your cows vs camels, If I wanted to cross a desert which would be better the Jersey cows or your camels? I hear if you put sun glasses on them they start selling cigarettes is that true? And do they store water in their humps or is that a myth? Do they consume more water than a cow or go longer without water?
#AskHomesteady Are you guys going to get a camel saddle so the kids can ride? I just suggested camels to my hubster as a possible livestock option, since we're in process of setting up our homestead in the high mountain desert area of CO...are you nuts??? LOL I guess I may be.
#askhomesteady Hi guys. I’m planning to move to Pennsylvania ( Lycoming County) Any tips on living on farmstead in PA? You guys are such a wonderful inspiration for me and my family. Regards
#askhomesteady OK you are not drinking (bovine) cows milk. What happens to the mini jerseys now? Are you going to sell the raw jersey milk? Are you going to get the kids who are fine with cow's milk learn to milk the jerseys?
I am so excited for you and your Camels! I just started reading the book Camel Crazy and wish I had easier access to Camel milk. I don't have health issues but it's good for you anyway. In another note how are you adorable puppies? Are you keeping the white one. Can we get an update?
#askhomesteady Hey there, I know this is a camel based video, but I am from Jersey (small Channel Island between England and France), the original place of the Jersey cow. I know you have "miniature" Jersey cows, just wondering if you knew if they were the same thing as a normal Jersey cows or is it a selectively bred sub species? Cheers and keep up the good work, starting up our own homestead in the French Alps and loving the information!
Camels originated in the Americas and from there they spread all around the world. During the last ice age they became extinct in their origin continents (same for the horses).
#askhomesteady So camels just like donkeys and goats (also desert animals) lack the water repellant component in their coat that cows, sheep and horses have to keep them dry? Meaning they get soaked to the skin and get cold/sick (phneumonia)?
#askhomesteady can you use camelmilk like kowmilk? In cooking baking an such? What is the nutricions in the camelmilk that is better than kowmilk? Wishing your little cutie is feeling better soon. Its pure hell when the kids is sick. My little mini-me is born with hard stomac so she couldnt poop without ”help” in 4 years. she became 5 last tuesday and her belly is finally OK. I was breastfeeding her till 3,5 years. Love to follow youre adventures and day to day. We have only quails here tho. hugs from Marika Lantz in sweden
Greetings fellow Pennsylvanian ! A few years ago, out here in eastern PA, we had Einstein... the 309 Camel. m.ua-cam.com/video/LP1kcFlmMcA/v-deo.html Keep up the great work guys !
im affraid i couldnt join or afford your camel train i live off 638.00 a month thats all i get and im disabled! i am even looking for people to take my gunea pigs four of them cause i cannnot afford them too expensive! i love watching you and your family though and i enjoy those camels
wrong. camels are native to Pennsylvania. The first fossils of earliest camel relative is from south dakota. So yes. They are from this area. Poebrotherium and camels lived all across USA before hunted to extinction.
What do you do with the male camels? I know with cattle, sheep and other animals the males are fixed and butchered. Obviously you can't milk the male camels.
You can have Mongolian Camels, instead... If you can get them... Please check Bactrian Camel(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bactrian_camel).. Check the life history which specifies it tolerance to extreme cold and extreme heat...They only give 5 litres of milk a day(downside)... Conservation Status as per wiki is Domesticated and not critical(given for endangered species)... Endangered species are wild bactrian and not domesticated one... Mongolians has been using these camels for centuries... I think you brought dromedary Camel(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dromedary).. In wiki, it is said that they are sensitive to cold(under history). They give 20 litres per day....
I was wondering how you will do your breeding of your camel. Will it be artificial insemination or do you plan on getting a bull (yes I looked it up lol) & keep a breeding pair?
TerriBeth Reed They answered this in the first camel video. Solomon is an adopted calf who is not related to Millie. So when he grows up he will be their bull and breed with Millie.
#AskHomesteady I would love if you linked the actual studies that you say has all these claims for camel milk. From what I have looked up about this topic after you posted these videos there are only very very small studies (like only 8-60 participants) that honestly make very lofty conclusions from such a small sample size (I work in clinical research on human breast milk). Seems to me much more anecdotal. Not saying there are not benefits, but it seems like to claim it as some kind of miracle milk also isn't great or accurate. Just because there is a research study listed doesn't mean it is a good study. From what I have seen the websites that are claiming it to be a cure for everything are also promoting other claims not based on actual science or good research studies. Don't mean to be a party pooper haha, I just find that there are so many inaccurate "health cures" being promoted on the internet that are at best ineffective and money wasting and at worst dangerous. Hope that isn't the case here
Clovis, as you know I love to do research, and if I can find a good study all the better. Unfortunately when it comes to the gut, and how it really works, we’re in new territory. Our Gastrointestinal Specialist told me strait to my face “we have no idea why this happens”. Sometimes science hasn’t found a good answer yet. So when that is the case we look to find, NOT A MIRACLE, that is not what we are expecting or claiming, but rather something that passes the common sense test for us. Hard science shows camel milk lacks the properties that cow milk has that cause allergies. Hard science has shown it is mineral rich, and those minerals are more easily digestible to us then in other forms. Is it a miracle cure? No, defiantly not. Is it the 11th food item K has been able to add back to her diet without it negatively effecting the baby? Yes. That’s why we did it, the science and common sense test showed us that for our life it would be a good thing, and even if it had not worked for K, it is still an easier to digest milk and you know we love us some milk animals. Your not being a pooper, I love the discussion.
Camels used to be all over Pennsylvania back in the day. Way back in the day.
Gobi Desert in Mongolia has tons of camels and it is very cold in the winter with no where to hide from the wind. -25 to -30f no issue!!
Those are a different type of camel the 2 hump ones.
Those are bactrian camels, an entirely different, and unfortunately very critically endangered species.
Those are bactrian camels which have two humps. The ones in the video are dromedary which have one and live in north africa/middle east.
@@byronliu680 I have seen camels in Turkey and Bulgaria which are in Europe.
The look on the cows faces is priceless. It like "whata weird looking cow!"
Never woulda guessed camels! But we are so excited for y’all in this new endeavor. Praying all the babies gut issues are solved and healed!
The baby was jumping around it’s so cute.

I LOVE your camels! So fascinating! Looking forward to more videos! The baby playing at the beginning was precious❤️. Love the shout out! Way to go Cathleen!!

Those cows checking out Millie were like what the heck is that drinking our water. LOL
Thank you so much for this video
One day you can name your ranch Homesteady's Dromedaries!
Ha, love it! #askhomesteady
The cows are very interested. Love how they are so calm near cows.

Wow, that must've been so cool, lucky! How did the milk taste, did it take getting used to or was it delicious?
Havent been on the channel for a few weeks, Come back and there are camels.

Homesteady got a Camel so I got a Camel lol I wish! That lanky creature in the snow is the best thing.
Stop it. You had me a jumping baby camel.
I never knew how a cooler worked until I saw this video.
Being in PA the camel is actually back in its indenginous habitat. He was wrong in what he said in the video. Camels are actually indenginous to north America and are originally meant for cold temperatures and snow not just hot desserts. There's a Ted talk on it
I’ve heard that deserts get very cold it’s fascinating how they can tolerate cold and heat😮
You are all set for a manager scene
Yeah! They use the waterers!
I work with domestic Bactrian camels and they can be out until -50°C, and they’re perfectly fine!
#askhomesteady
I was wondering if your camels are vaccinated against brucellosis and MERS CoV which are both common in dromedary camels.
I knew camels 🐪 were cool, but I had no idea they were so adaptable!
Very interesting to watch your camel journey! God bless you as you continue learning all things camel. 😊
#homesteady what do camels have on the bottom of their feet. It's not a hoof. Is it pads like a dog?
They will be very warm out of Michigan..Winters here can be brutal!! In Mid Michigan it's not bad, but in the Upper Peninsula wind chill of 20° below zero are very common.
#ask Homesteady Will local vets know how to treat them?
#askhomesteady
That's a good question!
My friends had camels in WNY and they did great!
Do they poop like goats in pellets? Or like cows in patties?
#askhomesteady
Where did you get them?!!? I want some for our farm!
Yes. Camels can live fine in the cold if there is shelter for them. I live in Idaho where there are months of continued-32 degrees. There are camels up the road that do just fine.

the desert reach below zero degree celcius at night, so yes camel can survive in the cold climate.

The cold wouldn't be the problem more like the wet & cold
Camels originated in the Americas and from there they spread all around the world. During the last ice age they became extinct in their origin continents (same for the horses).
👍
#askhomesteady. Will the male camel’s behaviour become aggressive with maturity?
Cover these camels with horses blankets they are not meant for cold climates or install gas heater or infra red
#askhomesteady So camels just like donkeys and goats (also desert animals) lack the water repellant component in their coat that cows, sheep and horses have to keep them dry? Meaning they get soaked to the skin and get cold/sick (phneumonia)?
Fun Fact: The earliest known camel, called Protylopus, lived in North America 40 to 50 million years ago (during the Eocene)
Wow! Never seen camels on a farm before lol. What's the purpose of getting camels?
#askhomesteady can you use camelmilk like kowmilk? In cooking baking an such? What is the nutricions in the camelmilk that is better than kowmilk? Wishing your little cutie is feeling better soon.
