"It's unfair to have to spend $250 on a pair of shoes if someone else can't even afford a shoe" FFS who are we kidding? Let's double it: How much does a $500 shoe represent on the journey to a championship? 1 minor injury will set you back $500 in medical and physiotherapy costs. The ban was marketing ploy by shoe manufacturers not wanting to be shown up in an Olympic cycle. Simple as that.
I have yet to be asked a brilliant question about my researched topic: _synchronistic mathematics._ I would agree with your premise. In reality, people ignore topics not promoted by leading corporate sponsors, or theories acceptable to established schools of thought.
I believe as we continue to push technology, it's going to continue to be more of a philosophical argument as to what the limits should be. When does the return of tech take away the physical prowess of competition. This all started with Bowerman dumping rubber into a waffle iron, and look where we are now. Crazy. Love this discussion.
the tracks in general have also changed.. lets not forget that.. unless people are running on the streets.. then you compare.. did the people in the past run on dirt/gravel roads then?..
This reminds me of the clap skates for speed skating, or the hydrophobic suits swimmers used to shatter records.. There is always an edge, or competitive edge that the best use to push past the previous status quo.. "The Blade Runner" also comes to mind .
True, but things like those speed suits were ultimately banned, and it levelled the playing field. Not sure why this shoe thing is being allowed to go unchecked if it represents such an unfair, uneven advantage. It will be very straightforward to ban carbon plates and similar, limit the foam height (which they've already done to 40mm), and even check the elasticity of the foam. Everything from F1 to triathlon puts restrictions on technology. Competitive running shouldn't be any different.
Guys look into barefoot shoes and into the book "born to run". Modern shoe design is horrendous for the feet and the whole body. Back pain? Knee pain? Deformed feet? Weak arches? It's all because of these nonsense narrow toe, raised heel, extreme padding, arch "support" and stiff shoe crap. Yes even podiatrists that actually know their shit and research more than the basics taught in school agree. Look it up please. For your sake.
I developed hip/lower back pain while running in my arch support shoes. Switched to neutral/barefoot mix and it solved the problem. Tried going back to the old arch support and the problem returned immediately, literally 5 mins into the run. You should retrain to run in these though but it's well worth it and it's how we evolved to run naturally anyway.
I have been using the Bedrock's, Lem's Primal and Altra Lone Peaks. After my Doctors telling me I need corrective foot surgery and to try not to run or walk too much, my feet are "correcting" from wearing these shoes without surgery. My distance has increased radically while foot, knee and hip pain are all but gone. These are zero drop "foot shaped" shoes with minimal to no padding
If you do the math, the Nike shoe returns about 7 joules of energy. Coincidentally that is about the same as the Iliotibial band. So someone running with that shoe is effectively running with an extra pair of iliotibial bands or alternatively an Achille's tendon that is about 14% more efficient (the Achille's tendon returns about 50 joules of energy). You pick the comparison.
The arguments against the shoe sounds like ppl saying tennis rackets shouldnt be made with carbon fibers because it gives an unfair advantage against the wooden rackets.
EPO is the most useful and gives around a 3% advantage. Basically their hard work + training + genetics makes it impossible for 99.9% of the population to match them, even if people take whatever PED's they like, so it's kind of a topic not worth discussing.
I had a dream once where I was wearing rollerblades with small jet rockets attached to the sides of them and I remote control them but they where too fast and when I reach an extremely high uncontrollable speed I woke up.
Carbon plated shoes should be illegal. The advantage and the immediate speed gains you acquire is similar to PEDs. If you have ever run in a carbon plated shoe let alone the Alpha fly you would understand how significant of a difference there is between the elite shoe and a average running shoe.
It's just a thin layer of another kind of foam. Far from rocket shoes. Go running in these new shoes tho like ultraboosts or zoomx sneakers and just the comfort factor will convert you
Alternate theory of the reason for patent protection (my speciality in law school). Perhaps there would've been no benefit to innovate and spend as much in R&D that Nike has, without such protection for 20 years (from filing). Some see it as a barrier, but in cases where Nike seems to be developing outside of what others are capable of, I believe it's pushing innovation.
Patents are always a barrier, that's the point - but the reality is that, like always happens, the competition has already developed their own versions of this technology
I think this shoe advantage is a lie. Here's why. Great runners don't bounce up and down. They touch and pull. It is inefficient to be bouncing. So if you are touching your foot down and pulling forward, where are you getting your bounce back. There is no bounceback.
Then you would have trouble explaining why we evolved an Achille's tendon which is NOT used during walking but is utilized during running. They recycle energy (about 50 joules) making us more efficient as we run. Those shoes do the same thing (but only about 7 joules).

All shoes are terrible for our feet. The Tarahumara Indians run 100 miles in one day. They run barefoot or with sandals. They run on the balls of their feet and NOT heel to toe which is terrible for your spine and does not disperse the shock properly. Society is a farce.

Lmfao no Indian runs 100 miles a day. Wherever you get your info, burn it. Ultra Marathon Runners can barely get 100 miles run in under 32 hours. It takes most about 48 hours to run 100 miles non stop. No one is regularly running 100 miles in a day my man lmfao. Are you high? Do you know fast your average mile would need to be?
