  • Do meal worms REALLY cause impaction in bearded dragons? Or do they make good feeder insects? Over the years, we have successfully raised healthy bearded dragons on diets that included meal worms. In this video, we will debunk false theories surrounding meal worms, and their effects on our beloved scaly pets. Thanks for watching!

I also fell victim to the mealworm story. But I always found it weird that supposedly they can't digest mealworms, but the exoskeletons of crickets and roaches are fine.

    This video is absolutely correct.
The outer shell of a meal worm is made of chitin (pronounced KITE AN), and it is indeed a probiotic fiber that will not cause impaction, but will actually aid in the digestion of food by loading the gut with probiotics and digestion enzymes. Once again, great video guys, I love that you use facts and not fear. Keep up the good work.

Issue I have with her is she will only eat collard greens. I make her a variety salad and she will literally pick out only the collard greens. I tried putting a blueberry straight in her mouth and she spit it out.

I bought my beardie a couple days ago, and mealworms seemed like the best best to start with since they are $5 for 100 compared to $10 for 100 crickets, and I've heard crickets are hard to keep alive especially compared to mealworms, I wasn't really expecting to buy one, but I was getting some stuff for my dogs and something pulled me towards the animal section, and this little guy started running up to the glass and looked like he was excited, I've wanted one for a while but never pulled the trigger so to speak, I spent about an hour talking to a few different people about the equipment I need and everything else I could think of, and after buying everything, I decided on $5 for food instead of $10, I plan on getting more stuff this weekend after payday, until I started looking more, I hoped the mealworms along with veggies from my garden I would be ok for a week, then I saw people saying don't feed mealworms to beardies, especially not young beardies, and it had me scared a bit, I have the carpet liner right now, but I guess I will be looking for tile or something else, because I've read in here that carpet isn't a great liner, but that's what the guy at the store recommended because I was thinking I should get sand, he seems pretty happy tho, I can hold him in my hands and go outside with him and he's nice and alert looking around, he doesn't like flatten out in my hand and close his eyes or anything, I wanna make sure he's getting plenty of vitamin D along with his UVB light, and he's pooped a couple times in the few days I've had him, so I figure he's doing ok in that department, but hearing online that mealworms could hurt my beardie got me kinda scared, he doesn't eat a lot at a time tho, like maybe 3 at a time, I've also got a couple prickly pear cactus for him as well, I've been seeing that is one of the best things for them along with collard greens, don't have them growing tho, but I also have all the berries growing and apples, so I'm set there, I have all the greens I need, good to know I'm safe at least for a week to feed my beardie mealworms with his salad, I don't actually know if it's a male, haven't sexed it yet as I'm trying to build a bond at the moment and don't want to go flipping him upside down and holding him by the base of the tail to shine a light thru the base of the tail, it's just easier to use he/him generically, I'll find out in a couple weeks when he's more comfortable with me so I don't mess up our bonding

I recommend putting a divider in the tank if you knwo the dragons size have the length of it be 3x their length and put the divide there and as they get bigger you can move it back (putting the beardie in the 75 gal. Right away would be bad because of the size differences so just put a divider in to make it a smaller area)

Finally an informative video about beardies. I've been feeding mealworms as a part of their diet for 5 different beardies for 16-17 years and I've never had any impaction issues. It's so weird how this has somehow become a truth among owners. There's so many first time owners that are unnecessarily super nervous and being constantly nervous takes away all the enjoyment that beardies give.

Hi, I had a question, my juvenile hasn’t pooped in three days is that normal? I’ve looked up all the signs of impaction and he seems to have no signs of it and his Viv has always been 90 to 95 degrees.

@@sixela_5482 The hot side of the tank should be over 100 degrees, ideally around 110 degrees it shouldn't exceed 120 though. They need those temperatures in order to properly digest food fast enough, sometimes when the temperatures aren't high enough they need a lot more time to digest and can get constipated. Bathing them also hydrates them, which can also help them pass whatever they need out.

I was one of those first time owners that was scared when I saw people say no mealworms especially for baby beardies, but I've had him for a week now and he eats mealworms and dubias and he's pretty regular, at least once a day sometimes twice, so I feel a lot more comfortable now, tho I've also done a bit of research into what the exoskeleton of mealworms is made of from a scientific standpoint, so I happily feed him some mealworms without apprehension now

Crickets don't last long, and it's an hour drive 1 way for live crickets. I live in Minnesota, and wintertime sucks. The whole impaction argument, not just food related but even substrate related, is really starting to shift. We’ve found out over the years the main cause of impaction is usually related to other husbandry issues. Such as heat and even sometimes humidity issues within the cage. Great video and great info!

    • @ColdBloodCreations

That is absolutely correct, which is why we recommend a good quality gauge for testing. Those ones in the "kits" that stick to the side of the cage are very often unreliable. We have several sitting side by side and none of them say the same thing. The brand that we use and recommend is here:

Start a DUBIA roach colony as they live over a year. Search for a video on UA-cam for this. I have grown roach colonies for years. They are tropical and unlike the common house roach they cannot climb up on plastic or glass containers, do not bite and do not run as fast as common roaches.

Definitely, I have a theory that the ones that say meal worms cause impaction, are the ones that feed them on dirt for tank substrate, but that is me, I could be wrong. I have been researching bearded dragons for a couple of years because I have been wanting a male and all of my research says no dirt for substrate unless you have a female to she can dig. Dirt and cloth carpet substrate can cause impaction. My future tank will be 40 gallons, have ceramic tile for easy cleaning along with extra tile when cleaning that tile so it can dry, heating lamp on one side 100 - 125, because I live in NC, and 10. repti sun lighting on the other side, good veggies for breakfast with a mixture of meal worms for dinner and other worms occasionally ( not fed in the tank) and no water bowl in the tank as well. Every other day take him outside to get sunshine in the summer evenings for 5-15 minutes as well as vitamins once a week and calcium powder dusted on veggies. I will put him in a shallow tub of water once a week. I hope all of this is correct. If so, I am ready to get one.

I’m learning as I’m going but my beardie has went from gut loaded crickets, meal worms to an addiction to super worms. I typically order the medium ones bcuz he’s right at 6/7 months old. I’ve tried him on collard, turnip, kale, carrot leaves, red cabbage, and now raddichio (sp). He’s usually pretty good about eating til he’s full and then stops. Sometimes that’s 15-20 superworms, sometimes it’s 5-10. I’ve cut back from feeding 3 times a day to twice a day. Greens and superworms....but as we speak, over the last 2/3 weeks, he’s slowed way down on greens. I’m assuming it’s only temporary. If not, I’ll seek advice from an exotic vet. But he seems healthy and has a great personality and loves to come out and mingle with the dogs and myself twice a day. And he loves to sit on my tailgate in the sun for 15 min and then go on a walk around the block on my shoulder for fresh air. As long as he stays happy and seems to be healthy, I’ll keep this up until he’s an adult

I feed mealworms and superworms for all me beardies and geckos and have been for years as the diet should be varied and there are not that many insects to grow for them so I utilize all I can 👌🔥
I buy crickets cuz they are noisy and smell bad but I everything else I breed myself, including wormies.
I also feed occationally some adult beetles to have as varied diet as possible.
Our main staple is dubias as they are the healtiest but worms are WONDERFUL for getting some weight on frowing babies, gravid females, underweight lizards (example after laying eggs) and all my lizards always want these even when they have less apetite for example in the breedi g season.
Moderation is the key but never have I had a problem with any of my reptiles with mealies for these almost 20 years of feeding them.
They should not be only insect ever, that is true!
Preferably no lizard should be fed only one insect.
Also my beardies get occasionally some rat pinkies and mouse pinkies every month or two.
Those are also good for gravid females and growing young dragons.
Also with vegetables variety is key to a healty dragon 💜✊🏼

My baby bearded dragon was 2 months when we got him, he is now 3 months, first petland gave us 1/2 live crickets, we ran out and my mom went to get more, this time around they gave her 3/4 live crickets saying it's fine for my 3 month beardie, most of them are alot bigger than the other ones I am use to and i fed him a few before I realized it probably isn't a good idea and am now feeding him the packaged dead ones I bought in case I ran out of live ones again. Would it be OK to feed him 3/4 crickets at 3 month age?

    • @ColdBloodCreations

3 months of age can have alot of size variations, so it's hard to tell. Food items should be no larger than the space between their eyes. BUT! You can remove the back legs of crickets and feed them if they are too large...

I personally love mealworms I've used them solely for the past 12 years breeding leopard geckos and never had 1 issue. Remember if all aspects of care are proper impaction will not happen

I found your awesome video after our adult bearded dragon ate "too many" mealworms according to a Google search. It said only let them eat 5-6. We found our girl along the side of a trail a few days ago where we ride bikes every evening with our kids and it was a total fluke that we even found her. We assume someone just let her go in the bushes, as there are no homes in the immediate area, just a small river. So we had no clue how long she had been out there, or when she last ate (we live outside of Austin TX). We took her home and thankfully were able to get a good enclosure and lighting/heat for her, but she wouldn't eat any greens or even cut up pear. We sat her in a bit of warm water in the bath last evening and we saw her drink thankfully... but she still hadn't eaten. Then this afternoon we finally saw her eat a bit of collard green, but not more than a bite or two. The meal worms we had ordered finally arrived this evening and we dumped a few in her terrarium and she went NUTS. We were so happy to see her finally eat that I never even bothered to look up how many she should eat until she had probably had 20+ 🙊 She's super happy and energetic right now, and we'll give her another little bath tonight just to make sure she gets some more water. Thanks for your info, I feel a bit more relieved that she's not going to die!
