no problem because it´s only the rythm behind who arrives to those +10db ,try to record a band with guitar and voice and than see if there´s any distortion or rock bands,it´s only to record till+1 in chrome or metal but i do the same as you, not having calibration is the main problem but it does have a higher equalization ,it records and plays perfect, when mike oldfield was a great musician, i saw a concert once from this tour in London i was amazed by the sound played in the stage, every sound was there

the same as me but bought it in 89 after having the DRM-700a, i bought it very cheap from a friend hi-fi store, i wanted to see the diference between sendust, ferrite or amourphous heads, both are incredible good not having calibration ,the series before had calibration but the highest model was already like this, but only notice a more detailed sound if the recording had the +1 level that is what comes in the instructions manual ,but it records much higher without any noticeable distortion ,it depends on the type of music

both are good but the technics of this range or highest model does make very good recordings and it as calibration, the scale on decks might be diferent so one goes till +6 but in other the same level might be +3, i think it´s available for download every type of scale and the diferencies between brands, i do have a colection of cassette decks, never sold one since i bought my first one a CT-F4141 from pioneer before i only had a akai reel deck from 1970 which only records ferric tapes but sounds above most of the decks at high speed, about sounding better than a cd with a much lower reference deck one notices a improvement on the dynamics, i was always recording type one tapes ,if good they do record perfect and after 37 years i re-recorded a already recorded several times UR from the mid 80´s and the sound is incredible good ,today i still have a box of UR´s from late 80´s they are very good tapes as others from diferent brands
