- Dehing Patkai National Park is a rainforest in Assam, India that's known for its rich biodiversity:
Location
The park is in the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Assam, and is part of the Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve. It's also close to the oldest refinery in Asia, Digboi, and Lido, an open cast coal mining site.
Size
The park covers 231.65 square kilometers (89.44 square miles) of rainforest.
Wildlife
The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including:
48 mammals, including eight species of wild cats, such as tigers, leopards, and clouded leopards
50 species of snakes
13 species of lizards
Rare and threatened turtles
Over 350 species of butterflies
293 species of birds, including 13 endangered species
History
The area was identified as a potential wildlife sanctuary in the late 1980s, and was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2004. In 2020, the Government of Assam upgraded it to a national park.
Best time to visit
November to mid-May is a good time to visit for bird watching. March to May is the breeding season for birds, and vegetation is at its lowest point.
