That's wonderful footage! Wouldn't those folks be shocked, dismayed & possibly disappointed in the growth & changes in their beloved Smokies! Thank you for the walk down memory lane.
I met Mike Maples just before he passed away. I have a couple of his books. He gave me a lot of good information about my family history. My Grandmother and family lived in the Sugarlands and i have relatives buried there in and around Gatlinburg.
Awww this awsome. This nice of Mr Kevin let u share it. This stuff I like looking at. I use to see all Mike Maples footages and photos. He was a nice m person. Only got to follow pages and asked him questions He gave us info nicely. .
Kevin and the late Mr. Maples, in my opinion are pillars of the community here. I wish I would have had the chance to correspond with Mike. What he captured on camera is really special. Thanks so much for watching!
My grand dad worked the CCC jobs during that area. He ended up marrying a girl from Cosby. He went on the own several business from Johnson City to Parrotsville. I heard the stories passed down to me but unfortunately didn't get to keep up with that early family members.
We loved seeing the old footage..so interesting to see how things were..thank you for sharing. Just an idea..would love seeing old footage of other places like Townsend,Sevierville,Pigeon Forge, and more of Gatlinburg and the GSMNP. I love the history..
Hi Joy this came across my feed but I still love looking at the history wow this is so exciting. I wish we would all learn about history instead of turning from it Thank you for sharing God bless
Oh what PRICELESS historical footage! So many things you can pick apart from this imagery that just tugs at the heart of our beautiful Gatlinburgs roots and the mountain people who sacrificed so much to give their glorious mountain to the country! My husbands family was from Tellico Plains and Maryville in the foothills of the Smokies and going to Gatlinburg was at least an annual event! We spent our honeymoon there, it snowed in April 45 years ago. To see the old streets the buildings the streams and mountains so much unchanged then to what they are now its crazy. I loved the footage of the horse stable and later the trail ride scene (around 6:50-6:59) the lead horse is obviously gaited by his headset, strong surefooted gait so most likely a TN Walker or Ky Mountain Horse. Those old trail bosses knew they needed good surefooted comfortable deep chested horses to climb those steep trails! That was our fav part.
Love this. I started going to the Smokies when I was so little. A lot of the vintage photos look very familiar to me. Not sure if you knew it or not, but Wiley Oakley was Becca Jordan's (Michael Jordan's wife) great grandfather. And Mike Maples is a true legend. He was so full of historical information. He was known as the Mountain Jedi. There is a waterfall off trail named after him. Watch all his videos. You will learn so much! We all miss him. He is buried in a cemetery near Greenbrier.
I absolutely love history and especially history from around the mountains. My wife and I were born and raised in the mountains of NC. We are raising our two boys in the county we grew up in. These mountains are our home and always will be I reckon. God bless y'all 💙🙏
I remember a lot of this. I have some vintage photos of Gatlinburg that I have framed. One of my close friends there is a Maples. In a way I wish it still was the way it was back then ❤
I wish so too. My parents honeymooned in Gatlinburg. Our yearly family vacations were spent there. I still take an annual vacation there. It's changed so much, but the Smoky Mountains remain God's country.
So fricking awesome. Wish we could go back to that at the Smokies. Probably on of your best videos. We love the Maples family. Great people. Thanks you guys.
Wow! Great footage.. enjoyed seeing how it used to be..a time long gone. My mom was born and raised in the hills of West Virginia in the 30s -60s when she joined the service. That is my tie to the GSMNP. Love those mountains
I absolutely love seeing old videos and pictures of places I go. It's hard to believe how much changes(people, stores , culture) and doesn't change (the beauty of the mountains)over the years. Thank you for putting up this video. Given the original person the credit is great, but you deserve credit to for thinking of during the video on your channel so people know how the smokey used to be. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
SO amazing to see this! Years ago I read "Christie" by Catherine Marshall, about a young gal who spent a year teaching the school children of the Smokies (before it was dedicated as a national park) and the culture of those people was so poignant and haunting (and delightful, at times). It is a gift to see what the area may have looked like in the time of that story. And WOW, can you IMAGINE how pristine that are was!?
Thank you for sharing this I have always loved the mountains my family and I come to Gatlinburg every year but this year due to health issues . Love watching y'all
This is awesome! I also recently saw the comment you guy’s left on my page about using some of my handpan music in your videos! I’ll be recording some new content/music by Mid-Feb when I receive my new handpan and I’ll get in contact with you! (:
I loved it the way it was before it became what it is today. People say " progress " and I say, enough is enough. I feel the same way about Pigeon Forge. All for money and greed. So many of Gods wildlife have lost so much habitat on this planet. It's a shame.
That's wonderful footage! Wouldn't those folks be shocked, dismayed & possibly disappointed in the growth & changes in their beloved Smokies! Thank you for the walk down memory lane.
I believe they would be absoloutly disappointed. Watching this makes me almost… ever these times, even though this was a rough time for early America.
💯 agree, it's sad and humble 🙁 but progress always win😔 Thanks for sharing 🤗
That they would Kathy
I met Mike Maples back in 2015 a few years before he passed. Lovely man!

I WISH IT STILL LOOKED THAT WAY

It looks so jarring to have all that fairground type stuff in the area now. You can't see much of the mountains from down in the valley.
Very informative ty and congratulations on over 14k 💕
Aww thank you

Great stuff Eric, Did you ad the music to this footage? Keep it up.
He did, thanks for watching
The link to Mike Maples page is broken? I click on it and it goes to my UA-cam homepage. But this video was awesome too!
Sorry about that. I think it's fixed now. Thanks so much for watching!
The people in this footage rally enjoyed and appreciated the mountains. Now you have greed and Yankees destroying it.
