    LOL! When you took off in that dinghy I was thinking, "Damn, I hope he's got a paddle!"

    Hahaha, you have some big balls my friend. A "test spin", at night, no back up motor or chase boat all with no oars! Once again, strong work dude!

    When I first started watching I was thinking to myself how lucky can he get to find a used outboard exactly like the one he already had. I then watched you pull that starter cord 400 times and it reminded me of all of the 2 cycle lawn equipment that I've owned in my life that I've thrown as far as I could after trying to start them.
    I enjoy your videos and I hope you get OB starting and running good.

      yeah I am not sure anyone is "Lucky" to have a two stroke outboard, haha. I try to think of it as "nautical crossfit"

    Hey, great video. You need to get some "Sea Foam'" It's a fuel additive, great for marine applications. It'll clean up that little Suzuki and keep your diesel motor running fine. It works like magic. I always have a can or two on hand. It will also keep your fuel fresh. It's great for motors that don't get used often. Nice seeing the dogs tail and the girlfriends foot.

    Very nice video. Cool switch out of the parts. Can't beat that motor for 80 bucks. Oh glassing. We replaced our mast step and I had my first experience with that. Fun times.

      yeah I am about to glass in an anchor locker shelf and retaining wall for the rode, should be an adventure in that cramped space.

      That sounds like a ton of fun. I am a bigger guy and some of these working spaces can be quite challenging. I am a do it yourself type of person like you. I try to just learn as I go. I am an auto mechanic by trade so that helps.

      that does help! every car or motorcycle I have repairing in recent years was done with the help of a youtube video... the first time I set my valve clearances on my Dodge Dart's Slat 6 WHILE it was running was only possible for me because I watched a youtube video and saw someone do it, it seemed crazy but once I got use to it I could do it no problem !

    • @LifeatSixKnots
      @LifeatSixKnots 7 років тому +1

      That is crazy! I have never adjusted valves that way. Then again most of the stuff I worked on was 96 or newer. UA-cam is awesome for almost everything.

    a couple other small items an anchor(small) a whistle or horn,and a small flashlight along with a pdf for each person, now your ready for night .Oars wouldn't hurt either

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  7 років тому

      we had all the items you listed expect a small anchor, and the oars came in very handy in Catalina!

    A lucky pair of finds. Thought you might have had some oars for the maiden voyage, lol. Am I the only one who moved their head as you restarted the motor on the shore, ha, ha.

    Sailor James, I got one of those Suzuki engines (an older model) and the water gallery was coked up with salt etc. I had to take the head off to do a proper clean but it is very reliable now. The fuel lever needs to be down to let fuel run down out of the tank. I turn the fuel on (and release the fuel vacuum) and wait a minute or two for the fuel to fill the carb. Then turn the choke fully counter-clockwise and half throttle to start. Good luck.

    while your in there check the reed valve behind the carborator plate,the water pump impeller by the prop, and the points under the flywheel, all this info can be found on line in a pdf file , nice buy keep the inline filter clean and make sure you mix 50 to 1 and it will last a very long time. I have 2 of them myself also for the dingy

      yeah I got oil for it and Meital owns / knows a lot about two stroke moped's so she gave me the low down.

    Nice video, once got a Yamaha outboard that was advertised on gumtree as spares or repair for £20 was the same model I had so went and seen it and was in good condition. Guy bought it of someone for a small fishing boat, was real angry caused he was told it worked fine. Once I got it home realised the kill cord that goes round your wrist and holds the button out was missing! Used the one from my own outboard and it started on the third pull. Could believe my luck don't think the guy who sold it knew what he was doing, had it for 4 years then sold it on. Noticed you didn't have any oars in the boat! Always a good idea especially if you are trying out a new outboard.

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  7 років тому

      Oh man that is a hilarious story, such a bummer for that dude but great luck for you! I have oars I just didn't have them that night because I was just going to the end of the slip and back and tons of my boat neighbors were around and I could have always just paddled with my hands or swam, but they sure came in handy on Catalina Island (in the next video)! Thanks for Watching!

    Nice gear improvement, the hard dinghi together with an outboard You can literally get on and off it with one hand.
    The outboard's supposed to start up a bit easier again when it was running just now, though, isn't it?
    Might be a beginning issue with the magnetizing of the ignitior, given the overall shape it was in when it found You, and its tendency to stall with low revs mainly, as far as I saw.
    Old school car electricians or lawnmower-mechanics could have a device to re-magnetize it. Got a bunch of astonishingly good results remagnetizing ignitors for magnet-ignited Japanese and Italian two-stroke motorcycle engines, in terms of easily starting up.
    Thanks for sharing!

    I couldn't see if there was a tell tale of water coming out. The Suzuki isn't air cooled is it?
    I went through three crappy and frustrating used outboards trying to get one to work as well as yours. I finally "broke down" and decided to buy a new, non current Yamaha 2.5 for my dingy three years ago. Its so nice to have an outboard that starts on the first pull, every time. With proper care it should last my lifetime.

    Carburetor clean up and a new spark plug mabye?
    A good motor when it runs ;-)
    No disregard, I just hate outboards I have to wind-up ;-)
    Hope it gets easier on you....

    I was concerned that I didn’t see any signs of coolant discharge when the engine was running, assuming it not to be ‘air cooled’ system. Did you check this aspect out?

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  7 років тому

      yeah some water came out but not enough for sure, it overheated several times in Catalina the following weekend and I ended up rowing a lot. I need to buy some descaler to clean it out.

    Dog has the right attitude to outboards. Great job again, but try not to expose yourself to the same things we all hear in the pub after they've pulled another tragedy out of the water, you know "yeah, the guy walked down the pontoon in the dark carrying a dinghy, clamps an untried motor on the stern, get's it started and off he went. His woman even filmed the dinghy spinning round in circles clobbering him over the head 'coz there's no kill cord, you couldn't make it up, no oars, no lifejacket an all that...". There's also a very curious thing which I've only ever seen on yachts from the States. They clamp the outboard on the back of the dinghy and then tow it behind, trusting the clamps. Every other person has a strongpoint in the dinghy that a line is attached to and the outboard is tied on as well, then when the clamps have vibrated loose and you make a sharp turn or the passage is rough on the tow, if the outboard jumps off you haven't lost it altogether.True, it's a cheap outboard, but they don't grow on trees :-). another great video though, I'm probably looking forward to seeing your trip to the islands more than you are!

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  7 років тому

      Nah, that shit was fine, and besides several of my boat neighbors were on the dock and on there boats so it wasn't like I was testing it out in the middle of the pacific. I do agree with you though about the towing of dinghies, its a very strange thing. I haul mine on deck to sail but I see it all the time where people are towing them behind as they return from Catalina, these are generally the same people that leave their mainsail cover on and have no intention of sailing.

    Nothing much comes of a used 2 stroke outboard for long that I've seen. There is a 4 stroke in your future. I'd keep a can of starter fluid on the dink because the inevitable will happen. You should install oar locks and get a pair of oars for that thing. Too bad the dink doesn't have it's sailing gear. The 2 stroke doesn't seem to be running all out. Clean the carb.

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  7 років тому

      finally bought some sea foam this weekend and will try and get it running more consistent but I agree with you about 2 strokes. I do have oar locks and oars and have put the oars to good use thats for sure. I don't mind rowing ashore but it would be nice to have an outboard when I am far away from shore or want to explore further down the coast.
