- It's a rivalry that goes back many years, and it's still as spicy as ever. Arsene Wenger said that managers who say their team won't win the title have a "fear to fail", leading Mourinho to respond that Wenger is a "specialist in failure".

What fantastic psychological warfare by Mourinho and stupid people will think that he actually believes Wenger is a "specialist in failure". He has now put pressure on Arsenal by reminding them of their trophy doubt, especially since they haven't been performing well recently. They performed very well for the first half of the season any many believed it may be their year, but know it will be lingering in their minds that all that can go to waste in the next couple of weeks and it may become 9 years without a trophy. Wenger shouldn't have provoked Mourinho... he knows he's very good at the mind games.
I don't think Wenger's tried to provoke him, he's just given an honest answer to a question that wasn't even specifically directed at Mourinho. There are 4 points between 1st and 4th, nobody can't be 4 points or less off the top with 12 games to play and not be in the title race. To exclude oneself from it is to give oneself an excuse not to win it so that one can say "I told you so" if one is not successful in the title race and that was maybe a little too close to the truth for Mourinho which could be the reason he responded in such a manner.
Wenger said they are in it, they want to win it and if they don't then HE will take responsibility for it. Although he has not been 'successful' in the last 8 years the only pressure he will feel is the pressure he puts on himself and not the Arsenal fans, the press or even Mourinho can do anything to increase or influence that.

People take the easy way by attacking Mourinho. I know the man does say and do plenty of things, and the attention he attracts is planned.
However, this time, and more often than you think, Mourinho did nothing to be receive such a criticism. Wenger said Mourinho was afraid to fail, and Mourinho only replied by stating the truth - what did Wenger win in 8 years?
Not a single trophy was won by the Frenchman, and that is one thing that is not acceptable in the world that Mourinho lives in. If Wenger was at Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, or any other top European Team, he would have 1 years, maybe less to prove his potential.
He has been at Arsenal for many years, winning nothing in the last 8. Perhaps Wenger isn't afraid to fail, because he never has high expectations to win anyway.
Both great managers with different methods. I just think Mourinho has a point here, and didn't deserve all the comments.
Point to me where Wenger said mourinho was afraid to fail. From where I am sitting Wenger was replying to a question asking in general if clubs are afraid to declare they are in a title race because they are afraid to fail, he wasn't specifically attacking chelsea.
Wenger wasnt refering to only mou. He was talking about rodgers,pelle,moyes too. The media twisted everything and made it look as if he was refering to mou alone. None of the other managers responded but of course mouthrino will never be silent. When they asked him he should have just said everyone is entitled to their opinion. Simple case closed. No he went further to call him a specialist in failure. Why?That is not right. I couldnt careless anyway Arsenal has won the fa cup and hopefully they can retain it again. But at least it is clear that Arsenal will do well in the future even if its not with wenger in charge. They have a very good stadium. And even chelsea will like to move to a bigger one someday but they have no problem since they have an owner that can take them there. They have money to compete too as well. So its what i call short term pain for long term gain.

Jose Mourinho is absolutely correct, when was the last time Arsenal won a trophy??? Mourinho won trophies with Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Madrid. In total Mourinho has won 21 titles since 2003 whereas Wenger has won only 13 titles since 1988 (during his time at Monaco) plus wenger has never won the UEFA champions league, Mourinho has won it twice. Wenger is a failure and if I were him I would immediately resign as Arsenal manager!!!

Every summer transfer window for the past 3 or so years Gazidis has spoken about 'massive funds' being available. We've always had money available, the problem is that Wenger has chosen to spunk it away over the years on bumper contracts for shite like Bendtner, Denilson, Santos, Vela, Eduardo etc. instead of spending it on actual quality.

I'm sorry but Wenger said absolutely nothing offensive in his interview. In fact, he complimented Chelsea when he said they were the front-runners to win. And out of the blue, Mourinho calls Wenger a "specialist in failure". Mourinho is an complete dick whose success is purely built on buying talent produced by other clubs. Wenger on the other hand has had a slightly above average squad, for several years now, but he still manages to bring out the best in them. That's the sign of a great manager.

Mourinho merely defended himself by claiming that if anyone knows about failure, it's Wenger, and not him. Completely justified response. As an Arsenal fan I agree with Mourinho. Wenger has never won a trophy (of any form) in Europe. His desire to win the CL has been non-existent, even Liverpool have been in more semi-finals/finals during AW time at Arsenal. If you have a team prepared to go all the way in Europe, your team should be good enough for domestic football as well.
Arsenal have players playing out of position which upsets the balance of the team. Why buy players to play them out of their specialised area, not everyone is Henry. We have players like Giroud, Bendtner, Sanogo, Diaby, Jenkinson, and Ryo, who wouldn't make any top team in Europe.
The transfer policy at Arsenal is absolutely dire and we fans start bleeding in pain at the end of the transfer window because our manager refuses to buy. Kronke said the money is available but AW will only spend on players that he truly believes are worth the money (it seems like no one is worth it for him).
Wenger is more of a financial director than a manager. This is evident in his poor tactical displays and man management of players. It's clear that we need 3 world class players in different areas of the pitch to compete at all levels but AW refuses to rebuild and January was a perfect example.
I used to have respect for Mourinho, but these Comments are extremely disrespectful, Mourinho has spent vast amounts of money wherever he's gone and Wenger has won trophies when he has spent equivalent sums on players, but he's had to reign in his spending to keep the club on sure footing with a view to competing effectively and consistently with teams bought out by Oil barons in the future. I would love to see Mourinho perform similarly with such constraints, but the truth is he doesn't care enough about longevity clearly as evidenced by breaching the FFP regulations after about 6 months in charge this season.

Inter doesn't spend much now because they practically went bankrupt.... Look it up, the exodus of all of their star players just as Rafa Benitez took charge, as a result of overspending and excessive wages. Porto have always spent vastly when compared to the league they're in, Not to take anything away from his success at Porto obviously, but he has never proven himself to be able to work with budget constraints such as the ones at Arsenal or Valencia for example. I am by no means doubting his success, but he basically just dissed Wenger for building the foundations for a prosperous future without needing a sugardaddy.

Besides, before he came to FC Porto, he was in Leiria, a team with a budget of less than 1 million and he still came 4th in the League, taking the team to European Competitions for the first time in their history.
Money does matter in football, and even though Mourinho does have a lot to spend at the moment, his success was never built on it. He is by far, a better manager than Wenger.
The promise of a better, prosperous future for Arsenal has vanished in my opinion. Bringing Ozil in was a good move, but ineffective at the same time. Arsenal is once again on its way out of the Champions League, and the season will once again end with no titles.
Porto spent £17m more than both Boavista & Benfica during the 02/03 & the 03/04 seasons and large difference considering the small spending nature of clubs in that league. Like I said it was still a special achievement to win the Champions league with Porto, but you've neglected the relative spending comparatively.
As to your point about Leiria, they finished 7th under Jose, they finished 5th the season Jose left. despite spending more during Jose's time there than Boavista did in the 2 seasons of his spell at Porto.
I'm not debating he gets results, but your comment about his success not being built on it... Well, it kinda is, because we'll never know how he's able to deal with Budget constraints.

I dont want to be noisy, but I think you guys are all tending to forget the particular (not very affirmative) way Mourinho did win the CL with Porto. When discussing about budgets being small or big, you all neglect the fact that Mourinho and Porto in that year had a HUGE advantage on not having to play against a top "shark" club like Barça, Real M. or Bayern trough out all the competition. Porto and Mourinho qualifyed 2nd place in their group fase. Then they went on playing against only ONE big team : Man Utd ( where they scored the qualifying goal at 90+4 min stoppage time when United was managing a 1-0 lead to go to next stage, and trough a corner kick...) and then played against Lyon, Deportivo de la Coruña, and in the final Monaco. All of those teams are far from being real tough with massive budgets contenders to a CL race. are they not? I wouldnt say he only had luck but I wouldnt say he had a daunting task winning that title, whilst on a small budget. He wasnt really challenged was he?
Back then Monaco was a very good team. Even Celtic is a giant team in europe. Don't say they are not stronger team in the past because they not in presents. Don't read the season, watch it. Every game. Watch Barcelona that season, watch real Madrid. Don't make yourself look like a kid born in 2005.

As an Arsenal fan, and for the first time, I have to agree with Jose Mourinho on this one. He was simply stating the obvious! When will Arsenal board realises this and get rid of him. Had we gone in with £50M for Suarez, we might have gotten him today to compliment Ozil's abilities. Giroud is not a striker but a ballet dancer. I have simply given up & hope for the best!
Ok, so Wenger can publicly accuse Mourinho of being afraid of failure, and Mourinho has to shut up and not answer back. People can talk all they want about him, but the fact is that he has been successful throughout most of his career. With Porto he won the UEFA Cup and CL in two consecutive seasons, with Chelsea he won back 2 back Leagues after they hadn't won one in endless decades, with Inter he delivered their best ever season; winning the treble, including the CL, also after decades falling short, and with Real, arguably his least successful spell, he still managed to win a league breaking the 100 points barrier against one of the best ever teams in history. Trash talk all you want, but Mourinho is probably the best manager of the 21st century so far.

Mourinho has an easy job as a manager. Other than Porto (who are still a very wealthy club) he has under achieved at every other club he has been at. It may sound bitter (and probably is) but the champions league win for Inter was a fluke. Chelsea and Madrid are two of the wealthiest clubs in world football and failed to win the champions league. He is arrogant, egotistical and commands little respect from any team he has ever managed. His players are not so different from him either. They would leave to any team should they offer him more than Chelsea, champions league or not. Just my honest opinion.

Porto were the most successful club in Portugal for 2 decades before Mou took charge.
Don't get me started on the Porto CL win - biggest cup fluke in CL history - K/O stages they faced 3 clubs that finished 3rd in their leagues - and beat the ligue 1 champions - a notoriously weak league.
Wenger turned Arsenal from a moderately successful club into the 5th largest club in the world.
INTER and Mourinho SPENT ALOT on the squad. They are paying for it now.

Spent £120m in 2 years on 6 players in/entering their peak:
- Sneijder, Milito, Motta, Muntari, Mancini, Quaresma.

His lack of trophies at Monaco cannot be compared to Mourinho's fruitful time at Porto. Porto were the largest (& most successful) club in Portugal for 2 decades before Mourinho took charge. Monaco were a modest club, and had competition from the greatest side assembled in French history, Marseille 1988-94.
Wenger still managed to claw 2 trophies from Marseille's grips.
He is the best in modern football at what he does - and that is building football teams with hard earned money.
And now he has gone one further - by building a super-club, whose future is only going to get brighter.
Arsenal run a self-sustainable business model. We only spend money we make. And are increasingly able to do so with our new kit sponsors (Puma £30m per season).
Previously, we were restricted due to stadium debt & had to sell RVP etc.
Using our owners money would inflate transfer fees and wages, and shift power towards our owner.
Our trophy drought is not that odd considering the competition from 2 sugar daddy clubs and another willing to run itself into -£700m debt in order to stay competitive.

If wenger had chosen not to build the stadium he couldve won a two or three pl titles from the money that was loaned out to build it, but he did not, coz hes more concerned about what would happen to the club in the future, thats just how much he loves the club and its fans. Now that the debt has all been paid, arsenal now have the stability, a self sustaining club, that can have 100m or more to spend every transfer wndow. First, I want to make clear that I'm an Arsenal fan thru and thru. I feel very strongly about these comments. This is because Wenger is older and at 67yrs he should know better. What business of his is implying that "those ruling themselves out of the title are saying so due to the fear of failure"? When you live in an estate with glass buildings, the worst thing you could ever do is start throwing stones. By making that comment, Wenger has indirectly taken a swipe at Mourinho and even Brendan Rogers for ruling themselves out of the race. If Rogers insulted a Wenger based on his comments just like Mourinho did, I'd have no complaints at all. When you insult people, then he ready to receive a greater insult.

If at all, Wenger could have declined to comment about other people and just focus on his team. Could he have declined to take the bait from the media?
