- Fans of classic semi-auto .22 LR pistols, this one's for you! Brownells Gun Techs and historic firearm geeks, Keith Ford and Steve Ostrem, are at Rock Island Auction Co. Today, they have a mint-condition, pre-WWII, Colt Match Target Woodsman pistol, fresh off the assembly line.... 80 years ago. This Woodsman's distinctive profile comes from its heavy target barrel with extra weight ahead of the chamber, old-fashioned adjustable target sights, and elegant yet practical "elephant ear" wraparound grips that provide a comfortable hold for any size hand. Fit and finish is nothing short of superb; these early Match Target Woodsman pistols are breathtakingly accurate, too. This was the Cadillac of high-end target autoloaders when "Cadillac" still meant the best! The Match Target was the Woodsman to get IF you had the money (if you didn't, High Standard made excellent, though not quite comparable, rimfire pistols). The Rock Island example comes complete with its original box, hang tag, factory test target, and manual, which really boost this gun's value.

In every generation there are the guys who recognize what will be future collectibles, and they take steps to make sure they have everything a collector would want in future years. Someone who bought a colt woodsman bullseye target first model and did nothing more than keep it clean and keep EVERYTHING that came in that box with the gun is the 1930s equivalent to the guy who bought Halographic Pokémon cards in the 90’s and left them in their original packaging.

So this is a first series match target. I am obsessed with the second series match target - both barrel lengths. But this one is just sweet with it's arrogant yet refined aesthetics - love it.
I’ve got a new in box Huntsman based on the same design. It’s not particularly valuable, but still a beautiful piece to behold. Wish I had the target model!

It would be so expensive if they made them with the same hand fitting. It would still be cheaper just to find an original one in excellent condition (even with the crazy prices).

I don't know exactly but I know that this is the holy grail of woodsmans and less desirable series match target woodsman's sell for well over $1,000 without the box and in used condition. I can't imagine what a like new 1st series woodsman in the box should sell for.
Would be good to see the action worked and removing the magazine, etc.
HAVOC the magazine has a heel release. The action is pretty typical
