  • Three of six seal rescues from 12 May 2020 for our NGO Ocean Conservation Namibia!
The first seal (the one from the thumbnail) had a looped white para cord wrapped around her chest, it had caused a deep cut on her left shoulder. The animal was weak and thin when Naude and Antoine came for her rescue. She was probably not able to hunt. After the seal rescue, she was able to run a lot better. This little piece of string had caused a lot of animal cruelty.
The second seal was a small pup with a thin piece of fishing line around his neck. The line was quickly cut off, the damage was very visible. He was very sweet and did not want to run away like most seals. He stuck around for a while and was very curious and sweet to Naude.
Antoine found the third seal while Naude Dreyer was busy with the previous one. This pup had a piece of steal cable wrapped tightly around his front left flipper, causing major damage. They cut it of with a Leatherman tool and let the seal baby go. She would have been a case for seal rehab. Unfortunately we do not have seal rehab facilities. Yet.
We are happy with the progress of our seal rescue campaign #100SealsForTime. We have now caught 35 seals since 01 May! 🦭

They often relax when they feel the entanglements being cut, when Antoine sweet talks them, or when they are given a gentle pet on the midst of being freed. Like #5 here sometimes they linger as if they know they were helped and want to thank those who helped them. I think they do know and appreciate it, especially the ones who were in a lot of pain or who had begun to weaken due to the entanglement.

I never wish for you guys to get bitten, you are the good guys. But I do respect the bitey ones because they are fighting to live with this entanglement that is often strangling them, causing them a lot of pain, making them weak and threatening their life. They have no way of untangling themselves and I'm sure they are desperate. Even the bitey ones often calm when they feel you cutting away the thing that's hurting them. I think they appreciate the help even if they are a bit grouchy.

The truth is, individual acts like this are huge, but not everyone has the opportunity to do something like this. And not every way of helping looks this virtuous and satisfying. We need systemic change because what often goes down due to giant corporations simply cannot be fixed by people working 9-5 jobs. Change is happening in the US though, and what started out as a boiling point after an unjust death could become so much more if we don't allow the protests to be stoped out.

Happens with a lot of them. Happened to me after deep massage. When you have an injury, you adapt to moving with it. When the entanglement is gone, suddenly your motions are way off. Like when you try to pick up a full container of milk, but it's empty so you lift it way up in the air. Quickly they will adapt to their new situation, though, and be better off.

I live in a small city in the Netherlands and we currently have a sudden 'wave' of people going outside.
But the trash-cleaning-companies are still not working properly.
We have a mayor that doesn't give two shits about the environment. And super-tiny garbage-cans.
The result is currently, our streets being absolutely filled with trash. We're not wading through it yet, but not far from it either.
Normally I'd clean it up and pick up all the litter, because it gets blown into the rivers, by the wind.
But for this one time, I decided to leave it and instead, take pictures and ask the city-council to do it. I might start cleaning again in a few days.
Don't suggest it's about poor countries. There are plenty of careless litterbugs in rich countries to fuck up the environment.

He has said in many other comments that currently there isn't a rehab center nor a vet in Namibia yet, but they are trying to fund as much money as they can to be able to open one! If you want that pups like that one and many others that require extra veterinary attention afterward then be sure to spread these videos around as well as donate to their campaign mentioned in every video's description!

I always say thank you because those two words have real weight when said sincerely however I’m not sure how to express myself when seeing that last seal with the flipper almost cut through with steel wire. The help you provide is enormous however the relief you provide these seals is staggering when looking at some of these shameful and preventable injuries. It’s so sad to think that this help is only reaching seals in Namibia where you live as surely all colonies must face the same challenges. Thank you.🐨🦘🌊☀️

    • @OceanConservationNamibia
      @OceanConservationNamibia  4 роки тому +13

That's true. Luckily we are starting to be part of the world wide networks, there are a lot of other places around the world who deal with this kind of injury. Our seal population is massive, but there are others as well. It would be great to be able to help somewhere else as well. But right now, we have our hands more than full with just Namibia. It is incredible.
When we started our #100SealsForTime campaign, we were worried if we would find enough seals for reach our target. Now we see that there are just so many more seals in dire need.
