I was there! Because the match ended after midnight, it was Federer’s birthday by the time it was over; they brought a cake out for him and we all sang happy birthday, shivering on a surprisingly cold August night.

God I miss his brand of tennis so much. I still love the sport and keep up to date with results but the guy just created magic on a court. I hope he is able to come back at some point this season.

Indeed. Tennis incarnated itself in the Fed. A never-before-never-again phenomenon. I'm waiting for his return too. And if he's able to get back to his 2019 fitness level...well, I give him a slam even. Just because the tennis gods owe him that for taking away so many oh-so-close ones where he was indisputably the better player.

@@jdawesome8485 Care to offer up some names? I'm open to that. I said what I did because, the way I see it, the Fed basically both _created and revealed_ a new (kin)aesthetics for tennis. (His tennis is repeatedly called graceful and elegant not because this person or that person likes it but because there is a broad understanding among human beings about what constitutes kinetic attractiveness of the human form...which is something the Fed was just gifted with.) And as if that wasn't enough, from about 2003-2009, he was _simultaneously_ the game's most prolific winner, its greatest aesthetic exponent, and its most wonderful shotmaker. I don't believe there's been a single other sportsperson in _any_ individual sport - leave alone a sport as physically and athletically demanding as tennis - who has been even two of these simultaneously, let alone all three. A singular achievement by a never-before-never-again phenomenon.

Not the young ones in the era 2003-2007. Only Federer gave in 2017/2018 some competition as grandfather (36/37 years). Special the last five years are weak when only a few thirties are dominant. Okay, I just finished watching this one...and I believe we now need a new category.
    These already exist.
    (1) Matches won by Fed after saving MPs: 24 (?)
    (2) Matches lost by Fed after having MPs: 24 (?)
    New addition:
    (3) Matches won by Fed one or more sets after squandering MPs:
And I shudder to think of the numbers of (2) if we replaced MPs with set points. I'd wager it was about 50 in GSs alone...with 40 of them resulting from Fed's incorrigible "passive safety" on important points like these. His AO match against Tsitsipas comes to mind. Could have won the match in straight sets...instead lost it in 4.
Is there *_anything_* the Fed has left undone during his "long and beautiful run"? If he has, I'm sure we'll see him set it to rights when he returns. :D

I didn't forget this match...cuz Roger then lost the final to Tonga and lost to Cilic in the US Open SF after his 5-setter with Monfils. Not that I'm still bitter about that blown US Open golden opportunity with both Djokovic and Nadal already out of the tournament and Nishikori already in the final. Roger was spent after that Monfils match but credit to Cilic for stepping up. He's a guy I always thought would win multiple slams - and like DelPo just never got the job done.

Im afraid Djokovic did an unrepaired damage to tennis ... Im afraid that from now on tennis will be dominated by the ball pushers and the players who play not to loose and that even though Tsitsipas is around there will never be another RF in the sense of the complete all around attacking player who creates magic in order to win ... instead we will endure 40 strokes a point and endless hits from 5-7 metres behind the base line until an error occurs, the after Djokovic era will be very ugly to even watch

Cilic, 2014. One year from his ban for nikethamide, a PED. Was he playing clean in this match? Is he playing clean now? It's become nearly impossible to catch PED users if the drug maker is so good in staying one step ahead of detection. Bonds, Clemons, Sousa, Armstrong, never tested positive but was ratted on. And according to a former top WADA official, Nadal is always on the top of the list of tennis players for his extraordinary physique for a tennis player (or amateur body builder disguised as tennis player). Rich professional sports players who can afford the top chemistry to disguise themselves, rarely get caught. Unfortunately, we won't know until somebody snitches.
