I’ve read elsewhere that this was the brainchild of Clive Davies head of Arista records at the time, Aretha hadn’t chatted for years, George was wanting to break away from Wham! and the sugar coated pop material associated with them and this was the result, Aretha’s 1st UK No.1 record (I think it did pretty well in the US too) and rejuvenated Aretha and it certainly raised George’s stock and brought him some new respectability from the music press, he was unfairly underrated as part of Wham!, he wrote pretty much all of their and then later his solo songs. Talk about a win, win for George and Aretha 😊
George a couple of collaborations ,he sung with Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder,Smokie Robinson,Elton John more than once,Mary J Blige, Whitney Houston,Ray Charles, Pavarotti, etc etc
This gave Aretha her first no 1 here in the UK for 17yrs she was also his favourite singer, can you imagine how ho George felt singing with her, fantastic song with 2 icons
Aretha had terrific hits and a great impact during the '80s. I know she is of way back, but she sustained that, and I am grateful for that in my life. She is the first, a legend, and George is another legend: respectful,.even and sincere, as well as purely talented
It’s quite interesting bro that after George Michael’s album Faith which was a mammoth top seller worldwide he recorded a follow up album which he claimed his record company (Sony I think it was) did very little to back it and promote it, I think he had a beef with them about some of the contractual arrangements with them too if I remember correctly. Subsequently I think he brought a lawsuit against them and while this was ongoing they told him he couldn’t record or release any records of his own under his own name even. And that is where the genius of Elton John and Queen come in. So he recorded Don’t Let The Son Go Down Me live with Elton and I think it was marketed as Elton John feat. George Michael and the same goes for Queen who he recorded Somebody To Love with, with both as a ‘featured’ or ‘guest artist’ he could still record and make a living while in despite with Sony! If I recall correctly I think he mighta lost the lawsuit 😕
When this came out it was on constant repeat. More George Michael would be great. Aretha is incredible too.
The rabbit hole of George Michael's songs is a journey to greatness ❤❤🔥
