It helps to be one of those locals and be able to take advantage of those park closures in the spring. A lot nicer when you're sharing the full road with just other cyclists. Beartooth Highway or Going to the Sun road in Glacier. Try those if you make it back this way. And yes, we call them buffalo as well as bison.
November would be a comparatively slow time for Yellowstone too. The conflict between preservation of National Parks and the overcrowding it brings is a weird irony that I think is lost on no one. It seems like a bus system at Yellowstone could help out with that a lot since most people are driving one of the loops and stopping in the same places. It helped a ton at Zion. But I assume Yellowstone has some unique problems. I think they used to have a bus system many decades ago.
They're definitely called Buffalo in Wyoming and Montana. They open the park for bikes only at the beginning and maybe the end of the season for a week-ish. That's a pretty amazing time to ride there.
I rode through Yellowstone and Glacier on a tour earlier this year. Neither is great for biking, but Yellowstone is actively hostile to bikers. The RVs, narrow roads, and insane traffic made it tough to enjoy the insane natural beauty. 100% agree: go see it but leave the bikes at home. Maybe some day they'll build a bike route through the parks.
Funny you mentioned fly fishing. I was just watching a doc on Yellowstone and they were talking about the salmon larvae which live under water until they don't, and then they climb onto a log and transform into a salmon fly, and I mean by the tens of thousands. Then they showed a woman who had made some artificial salmon flies to fish with and she was killing it. Anyway, heading to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone in a few days and was trying to figure out the best places to ride. Thanks for the videos. Looks like we'll stay mostly in and around Grand Tetons on the bikes.

It felt a lot less touristy and had some great wildlife along the way.
Another good park to ride Shenandoah park in Virginia. Skyline drive is nice. I have to drive it , do not have the fitness to bike it. Doing the leaf peeping this year saw a few bicycles out there.
I just rode from Luray to Big Meadows a few weeks ago. That is a beautiful ride. Road is narrow, twisty and obviously hilly. I was very impressed with the car/drivers. No issues at all and it was super foggy. Sometimes cars and bicycle can play nice.
If you get off your bike and walk (aka hike), you can get away from all those cars. If you get more than a mile from the road you wont see any people either.
Haul, Double Haul and Roll Cast, You flyfish too!!! Take a fly rod with you on the gravel bike and let us watch you flyfish with your cookie jersey on, epic.
Great video Phil! I disagree about bringing bike to Yellowstone...I was there in June and rode from Madison down to Old Faithful and back...great ride and beautiful views!
Lassen National Park is outstanding for bikes, great switchbacks, incredible scenery, and virtually no cars if you go during the week. Glacier Point in Yosemite is amazing but there are a lot of cars, either go on bikes only weekend in the Spring or sunrise on a weekday but not in 2022, it's being entirely repaved.
Just as an FYI Phil, both Teton and Yellowstone have cycling only times in spring and fall. I try to go as much as I can. Especially Yellowstone is awesome without cars.
Twice I road the Cycle Greater Yellowstone ride, to benefit the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. We did not go in the park, but areas surrounding it, that they are trying to protect for wildlife. (Sadly, I think COVID killed the event for good.) There is some incredible and diverse cycling in the area.
The last comment about the video is over, take a deep breath... and then clapping... killed it! Nailed the comedy especially that joke about the snooty carbon fiber roadie character earlier on...
They open the main roads through Yellowstone to cyclists a couple of weeks before they are open to cars if you don't want to share the roads with cars. Reportedly, there is even more wildlife when cars aren't going up and down the roads (surprise, surprise).
Not to be contrarian but those shoulders and those views looked pretty nice for a bike ride in a famous park. Sure, maybe it is not the gravel road inside Denali in Alaska, but I'd rather go for a ride in Yellowstone than not. And hey, it ain't Everesting, so that's good. :)
Compare to Teton which was full of separated bike paths and sits right next to Yellowstone, though! If you only have time for one and you want to do it by bike, no contest
@@worstretirementever Fair point, Phil, and you know I'm not really arguing, way too mellow to get all huffy and puffy about any of it. And it is all just that, for me at age 62, I have really known nothing but streets and trails--some bike paths and lanes, to be sure, but basically it has usually been me on the streets with the cars and trucks and all of that, so I live for shoulders and call 'em my bike lane and do get cranked when a motorist encroaches by driving with wheels to the right of that line and sending those bad vibrations. And the lack of a shoulder on a two-lane road is often it for me, especially when there is no shoulder plus trees and vegetation pushing you into the lane, like the two-lane road south to Seward in Alaska at the junction a handful of miles south of Girdwood. Plenty of shoulder and then, turn south and no shoulder and lots of vegetation and 18-wheelers bouncing on rutted asphalt with no room to spare and who knows how long that was deal but no deal for me, I turned around and that was fine with me, the risk was not worth it when it is supposed to be about sporty and scenic.

National Parks are experiencing higher than normal crowds this year. Was in Zion and Bryce a few weeks ago…very very busy.
