Older Japanese houses had a thin layer of cedar bark under the tiles. If rainwater did penetrate the tiles, they were made to dry easily and last for a long time. Yeah. Old roof technology was amazing, even if flawed. Do you know that layer of clay under the roof tiles is there cause it will harden if it get wet, improving its protective qualities. Still probably to a some degree
