    What made a difference for me on my Blues Deluxe was switching out the V1 and V3 12AX7 preamp tubes for the 12AU7 and 12AT7, respectively. What placed the icing on the cake was adding the Keeley Compressor Plus.

    Thanks for this! One of the best demo/walk throughs on this amp I’ve found, and I’ve watched a ton. I just bought this amp and have been searching for sample EQ settings and tips and this vid hit the spot. I toyed with the idea of putting in the Cannibus Rex but think I’ll end up going with the Swamp Thang at some point. The stock speaker is ok but not great. I also swapped out 2 tubes for an AY7 and an AT7 for additional head room on the clean channel and to make it more bedroom friendly. Anyway, thanks for the vid!

    Great video for tips. I have a Blues Deluxe and I love it! But I also have a Brownface VibroVerb too. I did switch out my speaker in the Blues Deluxe to a cannabis rex. I have a Texas heat I thought about putting in but the Rex is nice and warm. Thanks for the tips. I’m glad to know I’m not the only turning the treble. I keep my treble at 2 and my presence varies from 4.5 - 7.

I play Dobro into a fishman Aura spectrum in to a fishman Tonedeq and it sings... but it sounds good when i play my tele thru it as well.. however not as well as my 70 silverface fender vibrolux.. but it never leaves home...sad but true... Hi Jack, this is my first time commenting on your channel. Let me start out by saying, your channel is one of my favorites. I would like to ask you a question about something on this particular amp. I have a 1994 Fender Blues Deluxe (first year, maybe?) and I also have one of the Blonde Fender Blues Deluxe from 1995. I believe Fender may have only made this amp for 3 months or so in early 1995. If I remember correctly, I may have had some caps changed out to smooth out the shrieking highs, which worked out well, but what I want to ask you about is this. I purchased two volume controls one for each amp that plugs into the in and out send and return on these amps. its a small box will 2 - 1/4" jacks and a volume knob that allows you to plug into the in and out at the same time. you then can crank the amp as loud as you would like and then use the volume knob on this little send and return box that is plugged in. For me this really took the amp to another level. In a way it's like a power soak but different. I have use power soaks in the past, but this seems different and really makes the amp come to life at lower volumes or louder volumes. Have you tried this before and have you had the same feeling about how this works?
    Thanks

    • @JackFossett

      Thank you! Yes I like those, I have one as well and have used a number of them. They work great as long as there isn't too much noise. Not the same effect entirely as a higher end attenuator, but better than a typical master volume.

    Nice vid Jack. Unfortunately, at the 5th commercial break before getting half-way through, I had to stop the vid. Love the BDRI. I agree, it's a different animal than many of the Fender amps. Decent price-point for that much power, but you need to do some experimenting with pedals and settings. I find the tone very temperamental, relative to the venue. But, dialed in, it sounds much better than the price would indicate.

    Thank you for the great video. I just bought one. It's an upgrade for me from the Blues Junior. Haven't even played it yet. I have a question. What is the signal chain? I have a pedal board with drives, mods and delay. Is it.....
    Guitar into pedal board
    pedal board into
    power amp in to
    preamp out into line 2 in on the amp??
    I obviously need help.... Thanks... Great playing and teaching. Subscribed.

    • @AndyPandyh
      @AndyPandyh 5 років тому

      No, you should only use the preamp out and poweramp in for your "time-based" effects, for example delay or reverb pedals. That will be it's own little signal chain, like this: Preamp out into delay pedal into reverb pedal into poweramp in (this is called an "effects loop/fx loop").
      Your other effects and stomp boxes such as tuner, compression, boost, overdrive etc. will be it's own signal chain not touching the delay and reverb pedal (or more correctly, not touching the effects loop). Your guitar will go into the start of this signal chain, and from the end of that signal chain you go into one of the channel inputs of the amp.
      Hope this helps. I also just bought this amp and will pick it up on monday :)

      @AndyPandyh 5 років тому

      @@douginny It might be, I don't think the Blues Jr has the preamp out and poweramp in connections, or even a dedicated FX Loop. In that case, you can still use timebased effects pedals, but for the "sweetest" sound I find it best to place them after your distortion pedals. If the amp I am using don't have an FX loop (like the Blues Jr), I prefer the following order of my pedals: guitar-distortion-delay-reverb-amp. There is no right or wrong here really, but most people I hear talk about this reccomend it this way. You will easliy hear the differences as you switch around the order of your pedals.

      Awesome! The Hands of Time is a great delay, I love the volume function built in. So honestly - I’d get the Deluxe Reverb.The main reason to keep a Blues Deluxe instead would be if you really want a two channel amp, but I think a Deluxe RI with an overdrive pedal would seriously smoke this amp. It just sounds more natural - the tone tips video for a deluxe reverb would be “turn it on. End of video.”

    The high input will give some gritty sounds if require, but the low input is where it all happens.

    The interesting thing about these Blues Deluxe RI's is that they all sound a bit different. I've tried 3 or 4 of them locally... some of them have been brighter/harsher with weak sounding reverb (like Jack said), and others were warmer sounding with amazingly deep powerful reverb. You just gotta go out and play a bunch of different ones because there are so many variables in components, tubes, biasing etc. even within individual models of the same amp. But when they are right, it might be Fender's best overall modern production amp along with the super reverb RI. They are so versatile as the normal channel is voiced like a higher headroom deluxe and the OD channel is a Bassman with gain control. Plus a footswitch that switches REVERB and overdrive (unlike the HRDLX). In my opinion this amp destroys the hot rod deluxe.

That input had a lot of buzzing bass that I couldn't get rid of and the drive and treble were weak. After watching a different demo clip by Staged Right, I plugged into the #1 for a short show last night, and I had to keep rolling down my treble and volume to compensate for the boost the #1 gave to them. Each one is probably going to be a little different, you're right.

    Great video!! I own a blues deluxe and I've tried all your tips except changing the speaker. I found however that the best thing to do with this amp is to use it on the clean channel, plug in to input 1, crank it up to about 8 (if you're using single coils) and then use an attenuator so you don't blow your ears off. By doing this, you get a fairly crunchy base tone without the ear piercing treble and you can just turn down the volume on the guitar to get a beautiful clean tone (without a noticeable decrease in the treble). To finish off, by using a tube screamer type pedal with the gain set low and the volume set high (kind of as a boost pedal) you can get a fantastic lead tone for your solo. This works especially great for blues and rock (SRV, Hendrix etc.)

    There is room for great improvement from the treble bite by swapping in better tubes. Mine built early 2023 had Groove Tubes which looked internally like Sovteks. I swapped in TAD matched 6L6 power tubes, a Northern Electric 12AX7 in V3 and TAD 7025's in V1 and V2 Huge difference. Treble bite is gone and the Fender tone is sweetened immensely.

    Thanks for the awesome review and information! Very useful for me. I just bought one of these and it looks like Fender has improved many of the issues I have read about this amp. The volume pots are now audio taper, and I have found the amp to have perfect even sweep in volume. The reverb tank is good quality and even though I heard they have loose/cheap rca connectors, I checked mine, and it is a new/upgraded tank compared to the older ones I have seen in this amp. The reverb has solid rca connections. The tweed appears to be lacquered now (which means it will last longer). The handle is brown now, and used to be black (people complained about this in the past). Last, I can say that if you really play with the eq knobs you will hear that when the treble comes up, it will actually cut the mids and bass, especially over 4.5 on the treble, so this is an interactive eq. I read that the eq is flat at 0 treble, 12 mids, 0 bass. Idk if that is true, but it sounded true when I checked it. I set it there, and then experimented from there. I found that I like the mids at 12, the bass at 8, treble at 4.5. With that EQ having the presence at 7 works well. When the amp is over 4 on the volume, the highs and lows accentuate (classic fender scoop), and mids at 12 will be appreciated. At bedroom levels the eq will probably want to be different, but ymmv.

    I’ve learned, expensively over the years, and of course technology has pretty much taken the tube and solid state centimeters apart. I have the had wired 64 Princeton, other tube amps etc etc. I’ve played over 40 years, on the road, in the dives you name it.
    This what I’ve learned. For much less money I can take one amp, no pedals, plug and play with my Boss Katana MKII 100, or bigger venues I use the Artist Katana MKII 100. Plug and play, sound guy loves me, the amp sound incredible at any setting, takes all my guitars and it’s built like a brick sh:t house. Like an old Peavey. Save your money, buy a Boss Katana make your gig life easier. I don’t get paid to talk about Boss, but, it’s the biggest no brainer ever!

    Two things have to be done to this amp to make it a great amp and rival any other fender amp. Change the Stocks speaker to a quality speaker with at least 70 or 80 watt speaker. Change the lineup of the preamp tubes in valve one from 12aX7 to a 12aY7. Change valve three -phase inverter) from 12aX7 to a 12aT7. 12aX7 is a 100% distorted tube….12aY7 is 45% distorted tube. ..12aT7 is a 60% distorted tube. These couple changes will render you an amp with a usable EQ section and a very fat warm tone. The hot Rod deluxe finally got an upgraded speaker so no swap is needed there but I still would change the preamp tube line up in that amp as well.

      @@MGMMirage2000 I really wouldn’t be comfortable recommending something I don’t have any experience with. What I can tell you is this, I would choose a speaker no less than 80 watts to handle the output of the deluxe. As you turn the amp up you need a speaker that will not lose its integrity. Also, I chose the ceramic Jensen speaker because I play single coil guitars such as the telecaster and jazzmaster which tend to be bright. Ceramic Magnet speakers tend to be warm which balance out the brightness of the guitars. Of course taste in tone is subjective to each player. If I played Humbucker guitars I probably would go within Alnico magnet speaker.

      Appreciate the kind words! For what it’s worth a lot of these tricks also work with the Hot Rod just with some tweaks. The clean channel in particular - the drive channel is quite different, but generally speaking the best way to get a good tone out of these is to use an overdrive into the clean channel. IMO.

    I run my Blues Deluxe with JJ tubes substituting 6V6s in the output to lower the power slightly. This gave me more of the tone I was looking for and removed some of the harshness of the stock Grooves Tubes. Then I began searching for a speaker to complete the package. I really liked the Celestion Vintage 30 when playing solo but found my sound disappeared in a band setting. I found the WGS ET65 to be a great improvement in sound and held up with the band. I mostly play Les Paul/humbucker guitars and am pleased with where I landed with the amp. I mostly use the clean channel and get my dirt from pedals as the tone shift when going to the drive channel is too severe for my taste. I can get usable tone from the drive channel and augment with pedals if I never need to be clean but have not found success in switching between channels. Personally I find the drive channel to sound better in its cleaner range. I run the master at or toward wide open and adjust the drive control to get the volume I need.

Speaker - I used the Original, an Eminence Private Jack, a Cannabis Rex, and a Red White & Blues. I like the RW&B the best. 2. Tubes - replaced the preamp V1 12AX7 with a 12AY7. These 2 simple mods smooth the tone spikes and give it an even sweeter, more responsive and controllable character.
