- La Linea is a Spanish coastal city built on the drug trade. Smugglers and policemen often come from the same street. Off the Grid met people on both sides of the divide.

Looks really pretty
its all for cannabis? bro u must be outta u mind
Literally none of that hashish is meant to be sold in spanish soil.
Cannabis associations have been legal in Spain for almost two decades now and growing weed for personal use is legal (with pretty strict limitations, though). What's ilegal is smoking it in public (wait until the po-po hears of alchoholic tinctures).
That hashish is meant to be smuggled to the rest of Europe. Their price gets bumped with every border they cross, leading to more violence from the gangs that smuggle and distribute it, as the stakes can get incredibly high.
For context, the average price of hashish in the two cannabis associations I'm in is just over 5€/g today, and it used to be under 4,5€/g about four years ago. Literally nobody thinks undercutting those prices is a niche worth filling, as the only people forced to look for alternatives are minors, who can't join cannabis associations, but then, if one gets caught selling drugs to a minor... it's not going to be pretty.
Do you know the size of cannabis market in France alone? It's hugely lucrative. But no it's not just cannabis. It's also cocaine. They make hundreds of millions off this
@@ade910 Been there, seen that xD No cocaine comes through La Línea, tho. That's more of a Galician kind of business, although a good volume gets smuggled in large comercial ports such as the ones in Barcelona and Tarragona. You'd be surprised by how few people are on it in those kinds of shenanigans. An efficient operation is run safely by bribing/threatening the smallest possible number of key people. You're right about the money, tho; it's... it's a lot xD
@@KirillTheBeast most cocaine comes in through Algeciras which is the port next to La Linea just a couple of miles away. Not sure where you have been or what you have seen but Galician operations were largely dismantled back in the 90s with operacion necora so your info is a bit out of date.
Besides major European ports (mainly Rotterdam and Algeciras) a large amount comes in through the same routes as hashish since it is dumped in places like Guinea Bissau and brought across the Sahara and Morocco to the entire stretch of southern coast of Spain - from Huelva to Granada and of course the groups in La Linea are involved.
@@ade910 M8, I'm old and have been out of the loop for almost two decades now... I used to haul hash both from La Línea and from Galicia.
The reason I mention cocaine coming from Galicia even after Operación Nécora is because back in early 2003, I went to pick up some hash in a little village in Huesca where I met a crew who had literally hauled that hash AND a bunch of cocaine by car all the way from Galicia (balls of steel, those guys). I remember that purchase because it was the first time I bought drugs using euros instead of pesetas.
I personally never got involved with cocaine, so my info on the street market comes from either users or small time distributors that felt the change in the upper echelons of the drug trade in the form of remarks such as "we don't get 'manzanita' in Barcelona anymore because the guys who used to bring it here did it on their way to France...".
Otherwise, it's as you said; big ports are the optimal environment for smuggling huge batches of high value contraband. I mean, you just can't have ridiculous volumes of goods being traded and imported without there being any MAJOR slipups every now and then, can you? xD
Living in Canada where cannabis is legal, watching this is bizarre. There is an outdoor farm up the road from where I live with about 5,000 plants. They don't get stolen and there is so much around the prices have crashed. For the old dealers their previous market has substantially disappeared. I was talking to the cops last summer while sitting on the tailgate of my truck rolling a joint. No crime. No problem.
Obiously weed isnt the main cause for the crime rate in Canada but after looking at your crime statistics and amount of overdoses I think Ill pass on legalizing so many drugs. Weed isnt that bad tho
@@bread4014 I lived in South East Asia, late 70's in an area known as the golden triangle. A gram of pure heroin (97%) was $10 and it could last two weeks. In NYC at the time a gram was $600 and under 10%.

We have taken a valuable medicine, disallowed medical professionals to prescribe and distribute, demonized it, allowed criminal empires to be developed, built a massive prison system and it all layed the foundation for the current fentanyl crisis.

Unemployment levels like that are in part due to layer upon layer of employment legislation slapped on by government/EU/UN etc. making hiring someone a Kafka-esque knightmare. Similarly operating as a one person business may require an under-the-counter operation just to be able to maintain an over-the-counter one.
The rules cannot be impuned though as to do so would appear to challenge human/worker rights & bring opprobrium down, to put it politely.
