  • In order to hunt your property effectively, you need to know how the deer using your land. The more improvements you put in, the more consistent the deer movement becomes. But if you are not creating your own deer trails, you're not going to have as consistent of deer movement as you could have. Creating a deer trail or deer travel corridor is just as important as creating a bedding area or a food plot. If you tell the deer how to move through your property, your odds of accomplishing your hunting goals increases significantly.
In this video we talk about a few different ways we have created deer trails to increase our hunting success.

Excellent information sir! This is exactly what I need on my property. I’ll be doing some of this here in the next six weeks or so. Thanks for all the great info and more importantly the examples of what these trails look like.

Thanks! I feel like showing you guys what my improvements actually look like is more beneficial when you're trying to create them yourself. Now keep in mind that deer are deer but every deer herd is a little different. Some are more finicky than others. Meaning that some deer might not like an 6 foot trail and they'd prefer 4 feet.. kinda trial an error but on the properties I hunt on, 6 feet from edge to edge works for doe families and young bucks.

Well though out dialogue. Your presentation is professionally done in a manner that clearly conveys your information to me your audience. You have a beautiful property and a deep passion for deer habitat enhancement. Totally enjoyed the video. Cris

Thank you Cris, I really appreciate it. I'm glad that you enjoy the videos they are fun to make. I figure I might as well make a quick video while I'm doing the work on the property to explain the thought process and hopefully it helps someone out!

Great video, every trail I've ever made for myself seems to be used by deer more than me,lol, they love them just like we do

It always amazes me out well these work. You really are telling them where to go. It works the best when you follow a path that they already want to take but you can redirect them a little bit as well.

I literally have to do this is open hard woods haha! Im right on riverbottom so its a good trade off but i have to make a bedding area then gonna create this for easy food to bedding structure! Lots of red twig dogwood will be planted!! Great video

Dogwood would absolutely take off in a wet river bottom, just make sure they get enough sunlight. Deer would love to browse on dogwoods as they made their way to a green food source in the afternoon.

Great Video. Love to see you out in the woods with your Son! Couple of questions. 1. Are you attempting to connect buck bedding to doe bedding to food sources with your trails? 2. How close is your doe bedding from the food plots? Is it right up against so you can gain more depth on your property or do you set it back from the food plot a certain distance? Thanks again. Good luck with your property.

He loves it out there. I can't wait until he's able to sit out in the woods with me.
      1. Yeah I am trying to connect these trails from where I think the bucks will bed with where I think the does will bed. Property is a skinny rectangle oriented north to south, with all of my food on the north half. I have been doing a lot of cutting to create as much cover as close to the food plots as possible in hopes that I can get the does to take up residence there. The plots and bedding locations are all separated from each other but within close proximity as well. So there are multiple plots and multiple bedding areas. There are trails in the middle of the property but the trails I hunt are on the outside (running north to south) connecting these food plots / bedding areas to the southern half of my property. This year I need to work on creating more cover on the southern half of my property to encourage more bucks to stay on my property.
      2. The distance varies anywhere from 10 yards off a food plot to 50 yards off a food plot. I placed bedding near food but also in a places that I could take down / hinge trees in a dry area that I thought deer might want to hang out. I tried to keep them as tight to the food as possible to give more space on the back end like you mentioned.
      Thanks again for the comment!

@@whitetailevolution Are you attempting to separate your doe and buck bedding with anything such as open hardwoods (probably an are where deer would not bed) or a "tornado" area of hinge cuts to discourage bedding? Just trying to get some ideas for the future. I have acquired a 40 acre parcel and am just in the beginning stages. My first priority is establishing a secure food plot but am also trying to plan ahead. Great channel, I have learned a lot already!!

You nailed it! That is exactly what I am trying to do on my property. I have food on one half (away from neighbors) and several small bedding areas surrounding the food. These bedding areas are either separated by food plots, open hard hoods or ATV trails. So they are pretty close to one another. I except most of the does and maybe an occasional buck to bed here. My property is only 200 yards wide so I chose to put them closer in the center to allow more room for me to sneak around the outside.
I also have 3 more bedding areas about 100 yards away from those doe bedding areas. They are more spread out from one another. I’d say about 40 yards apart and they are about 1/8 of an acre in size, not very big. But just big enough for a buck or maybe a few does to hang out and be hidden. I need to create more of these this year, maybe 4-5 more. More room for bucks and more cover so they think they can sneak around more during daylight.
The separation between these bedding areas not only allows these bucks to be by themselves but it also creates more edge, so it creates a pinch point between the two thicker areas . Deer go in there but if they are passing through or just want to get to the food they pass around the outside of each one, pushing the movement right in between. Might be hard to visualize without a picture..

Great Video.......I subscribed. I am in MI too. Question for you, does your property line access trail get used by deer?

    • @whitetailevolution
      @whitetailevolution  2 роки тому

Thanks Lloyd! And yes, unfortunately because we make clear easy paths for us to walk to our stands, the deer use them as well. They are lazy and will take those nicely manicured trails.. That's just something you need to plan on and try not to have any vegetation growing into your access that you might touch. Hopefully you have other trails inside your access trail that are more deer friendly (not as open) that they'll prefer to take. But even if you do, they'll still walk the access trails from time to time.

Do you find any sheds on these buck sneak trails?
