I think the reason the credibility isn't an issue is because the guy had no reason to lie about thug at the time. It's on recording. In fact, he was incentivized to be truthful at the time because he thought being honest gave him something to gain, and lying at the time would have cost him. Whereas now, he has motive to lie on the stand to save face, reputation, and life and limb when it comes down to it.

Day 45 was funny how it ended. Judge asked one of the defence lawyers if they had any questions for him before they walked out & the lawyer said "oh no, I don't recall." Defence lawyers burst out laughing & forced a smirk out of the judge.
