I rebuilt (this weekend) the Quad off my 1974 Caddy that I bought 2 years ago.....found the reason why it was guzzling gas at idle(really bad black smoke in the morning).......lead plugs were a little loose(whacked them with a Punch and then a light coat of 2-Part Epoxy)......and whoever tried to rebuild the Carb the last time.....did not install the metering needles down the in the Jets below the Float. I did make a tool to hold those metering needles in place before placing the gasket and top part on. Your Quadrajet is laid-out different in many ways than the one on the Coupe Deville. Too save money on Brake Cleaner/Carb Cleaner....I bought a small bucket and lid and filled it to the top of the Carb with gasoline.......the next day.....almost the entire exterior/interior of Carb was spotless. Another tip, I used Q-tips in the hollow areas where Carbon and the slightest amount of varnish had gathered.
Love the video, I just bought a 77 GMC Vandura box truck with a 400, it has been sitting for a long time. It drove great till I put gas in it, then it started gasping for fuel. Bought a new fuel pump, haven't put on yet but was wandering if I could send you my carb because I know you would do a thorough job of rebuilding it. I don't know if anyone in my area would do as much as you did. I usually do my own work on my vehicles. After video I know I could trust your work.
I want to share some speciai information with you on my 40 years experience on these carburetors and the one you rebuilt in that video. Concerning the power piston and air horn upper carb gasket.. Whether it be the non computer rochestor carb or the computer carb from 80 to 90. On my personal cars ever since my cadillacs of the 1970s and 80s ive owned and my present 89 brogham cadillac with the olds 307 I MODERATE THOSE UPPER GASKETS.On that gasket, the part that goes around the power piston and the needles I CUT IT OUT!! It serves no purpose and as soon as you run that carb on your car that gasket sags due to gasoline and rubs against the power piston needles and they get stuck or dont work fully. Your airhorn assembly also on the top has two nostrils iike a nose in front of your choke housing or a cylinder so the float bowl can breath, and to have gasket material over that float and around those power piston needles sags and pushes down on the float and rubs those power piston needles when it tries to go back up or down. Cut the part out with scissors that goes around your power system and you wont be having trouble. I cut that part out of all my upper quadrajet carburetors. Even on the two barrel carbs cut that part OUT
This video has taught me more than any book has. My only wish was watching this before I first took my carburetor apart and struggled and cursed putting back together. I did horribly that i caved and took to a shop that didn't fix the original problem I had with it. Thats a story for a different time. Thanks for making this video and for giving me the confidence of working on my carb again cause you explained everything well. You got a new subscriber.
I have the Mercruiser 5.7 with the Rochester Quadrajet on my 1992 Crownline bowrider. It's been hard to start for the past three years. I thought it was just because the fuel was evaporating out of the float bowl if it sat too long. An easy remedy was just to hit it with some starting fluid in the driveway before I headed out to the lake, then it would run fine the rest of the day and start without a problem. I had read many boat forums concerning this matter, and everyone concluded that these older boats "just do that". Now I know why and how to correct it when I rebuild the carb next. Thank you very much for what I would consider one of the best carb rebuild videos on UA-cam !
I watch this video many times but I finally use it last week to help rebuild my 2 barrel Rochester. I found the filter was double gasket and piece of plastic was block my float and needle making my carburetor overflow. Grateful for this video! Thanks gbody garage
I have rebuilt many of these Qjets. Your video was great and im sure it helped out alot of new carb rebuilders. The only change i would do would be use the choke rod to drop in the choke lever when attaching the choke housing to the main body.
I wanted to express my gratitude to you for making this video. Two weeks ago my old Dodge truck stopped running and I knew it was the carb but I have NEVER build one in my life. I called 7 auto shop and no one would work on my old truck. I said what the hell. I bought myself a carb kit went on UA-cam and found your video. I have watched it several times and I felt as if I could do it. Today 2.18.3019 I went for it and step by step I cleaned replace and repair just as you suggested and BAM! MY old truck runs GREAT! Smooth as a new car, idles smooth, great pick up and that small secondary lever, I left it on and it worked great too. I'm so impressed with myself and thanks to you I did something I always thought I could not. You have a friend in Texas!
This is exactly what this video is all about. Keeping those old vehicles back on the road. So glad you attempted it and now you can have great pride whenever you drive it! Thanks for watching. Your comment means a lot.
Very detailed and well done video! Do not forget to check the primary throttle plate bushings, as they do wear with age and may present a vacuum leak, that you won't be able to 100% compensate for with the idle mix screws. If the screws were out of sync by two or more turns, there's a good chance, that the bushings are worn on the throttle linkage side. I used to overhaul these carbs for a living and really liked them as they gave very little trouble when cleaned, assembled and adjusted correctly.
The best information available to rebuild a Quadrajet Carb, A thousand thanks for taking the time and patience to teach an 80 year old man to feel confident enough to take on the Task. Great Job.
Best rebuild video ever, completely disregarded the instructions that came with my rebuild kit and followed your video with great success. Thanks for quality video!
I see this video was posted 9 years ago. This is 2024. I wanted to let you know you are still helping people. I purchased a 79 C10 and have been ordering parts to rebuild and restore. I will be using your video to pull the carb and rebuild it. It runs but chokes out when given gas. Thank you for posting and leaving this up.
One of the best carb videos I have seen. Very thorough, and well described. The entracies described in this video make the differences between a failed rebuild and a great rebuild. Thanks for taking the time, and helping those of us attempting this project.
I've watched 3 or 4 of these quadrajet rebuild videos. Except for the choke rod hiccup, It's the best one out there. Well explained and great video viewing locations. Thanks!!!
Thank you all for taking the time to watch my video. By the comments below it has helped many people. Please check out my channel for more how to videos. Thanks!
I was working on my hitachi dch306 but i don't know about the primary jet {slow} and the secondary jet {slow} , and they go a long way down and then there's a short screw that comes above them to cover them up , anyway my question is should i screw them all the way down , or should i screw them all the way down and then screw them up few turns and not all the way down ???? my air mixture screw stopped to have any affect on the carburetor after i have put it back after the rebuild , so can it be the reason is because i should not screw them all the way down and should back them few turns up ????? Classic G-Body Garage
I am not familiar with a Hitachi however If the mixture screws have no affect on the carb and the way the engine runs then there is an issue. Turn the mixture screws all the way and DO NOT tighten them or you will ruin things. Back them out 2-3 turns to start with and adjust from there.
Classic G-Body Garage Thank you for your reply , the mixture screw have no affect at all , if my float level is way up high , would it affect the mixture screw in a way that would prevent it from mixing the air with the fuel ?????
I'm restoring a replica Indy Car that was a barn find. It wasn't started for 8 years. I've never rebuilt a carburetor, but I wanted to do the restoration myself. I watched your video several times before diving in. It was very detail and easy to follow. After cleaning, I followed your video step by step and it went back together easily. I bolted it back on the 1969 Chevy 350 SB, hooked up the fuel line, etc., started the fuel pump and on the second try, the motor roared back to life. With the straight headers, a few neighbors came out of their houses to see what the hell was going on! Thanks for taking the time to make a great video!
fantastic video. Like many others I have been intimated to do anything to quadrajet. I have a family heirloom all original bigblock monte carlo that has been sitting in storage for over a decade. I put a battery in it and will turn ove and even run as long as someone is pouring gas in the carb. I am about to get the numbers off the carb, order a kit, and attempt a rebuild. All thanks to your instruction. If you are not doing it, you should be instructing people for a living. Hands down the best how to video I have ever seen.
I have seen a bunch of people toss a good q jet because it develops an off idle stumble- i take their “bad” q jet - install a new accelerator pump plunger and go do burn outs- your video is the best rebuild i have watched so far- people dont realize their is only 2 q jet sizes 750 and 800cfm- GM used millions of these carbs on hot small blocks and big blocks that were very fast- they are still used today by guys that can tune them to run 9s in the 1/4 mile - that is screamin fast-
I don't understand why this video doesn't have more views. I've been looking at rebuild videos for almost 3 hours now and this is the best one yet. Awesome job and very helpful. Looking forward to doing my first rebuild. 👍👍👍
@@mikeyhue2437 AND..... a lot of problems get blamed on the carburetor that are valve timing, weak sparks, ignition timing, worn, camshafts, and simple vacuum leaks.
The best description of rebuilding a Quadrajet, no doubt! Watched this a few times, worked like a charm. My model was the 17057229 1977 Chevy G30 6.6L (400). Hardest part I found was getting the choke set up properly again (like you said in the video), other than that was able to rebuild in 2 days with this video. When I share up my video on restoring a Chevy 400 V8 6.6L I will be linking to this video to show how to rebuild a Quadrajet. You the man G-Body!
I need to say thank you for making this video. I am 1000 miles from home in my 1981 Chevy G30 based RV, and needed to rebuild the Q-Jet on it. The info given was spot on. The last person to try it had several things wrong.
IT is amazing that people hate these carbs I love them they are so easy to work on and if you know how to work on them they can serve you a very long time and provide you with good performance. Thank you for the video!
great video! I have searched everywhere and haven't found a detailed video. I'm 17 and will be attempting to rebuild my quadrajet on my 1978 k10 tomorrow for my first time. this video is very detailed and will definitely help me out. Much appreciated!
I'm 40 and still learning this and much more. I'm bringing an 85 K10 Suburban 5.7 350. It doesn't have this carb on it but I've had one of these sitting on a shelf for a few years after a friend's dad gave me it thinking it was for an 86 F-250 and I found out a bit later it wasn't. Now I know what to do with the dang thing. I appreciate this info. You kids keep it up. We all should know this kinda work anymore.
You my friend should receive an award for this video.you are great. very thorough. I have been building hundreds of q jets for the last fifty something years. you are intelligent, thorough and detailed. I might add get a 2x4" block 3 too 6" long hand set your carb. base on stand. also use a white rag or towel too place small parts on hand set parts in groups. also after cleaning power VALVE use a small price of fine steel wool hand spin power VALVE around hand polish holding steel wool against. (6 or 8 spins or until shiney). the power VALVE will raise and lower more freely with vacum.and with time, heat cycles, and fuel vapors taking toll on rubber diaphragms of choke pulloffs, always change pri. and sec. pulloffs ; always !!! and don't forget too not over tighten carb bolts or studs, the carb already is trying too be sucked in engine. lastly when you remove carb too rebuild place a clean rag over carb. intake holes make sure too have a peanut (planters peanut) can too HOLD small parts, nuts. springs in. and when you get it started and running double check for gas leaks and seepage. note q jets best friends is a 5/8" line wrench and a 1" skinny offset OPEN end wrench. if you or your mechanic uses a vise grip pliers on your carb. fuel line then you are DUMBASS.
First off, thank you for watching, your comment and your great suggestions. Very flattered by what you said. I am simply spreading my knowledge to help others keep these old cars on the road. I will take your suggestions into consideration the next time I rebuild one of these carbs. Thanks Dennis.
Getting ready to rebuild the Quadrajet on the 1966 Buick Electra 225 I inherited. This video makes the task less intimidating. One of the better UA-cam instruction videos I have watched. Thanks.
This video is the reel deal. It is very detailed and walks you down the path from start to finish. Great job. You rock and is very good at what you do.
Did this once about 10 years ago for the first time, put it back on the engine and it ran great. Watching this made me excited to do it again. Awesome video, doin mine tomorrow boats running like shit. Thanks!!!
PERFECT video. i have worked on small engine carbs, but never an automotive carb. i wasnt scared to tackle the task, but this with the help of this video.....it was a breeze. thanks for sharing
I have a 84 Chevy G20 Van I bought to use as a work vehicle. I am having trouble with it bogging down when I try to accelerate. It will run fine as long as you keep your foot out of it. I change the paper fuel filter you show in the video and all new plugs, wires, and the craziest looking distributor I have ever seen. I know its not a G body but it has a G on the body and your video is spot on man. I cant thank you enough.
+Tim Lastname check the diaphragm that stops the secondary valve opening to quick, also try tightening the secondary air valve spring. check this video at 56.15 to test secondary air valve pulloff its incorrectly named a secondary choke pull off in this vid .
Great video. I remember messing around with these on my 78 olds about 30 years ago now. Always wanted to tear one down and rebuild it, but we didn't have You Tube back then. Wish I could have had this as a resource back then, it doesn't look so intimidating after seeing this. Time to subscribe...
Great Video man!! the Passion you have for this Craft is outstanding, you really and truly do care about everyone that maybe watching get the best understanding they can possibly get, this is almost a dying art nowadays, I'm 65yrs.and it's great to have watched your Video! 😊🙏
Excellent video. I used to be one of those who thought Quadrajet carbs were junk. Of course that was strictly due to my lack of knowledge and not the engineering of.the carb itself. Keep up the good work my friend and thanks for posting the video. Semper Fi!
Have futzed around with my Dual-Jet (2 barrel) a number of times already, but I just learned so much more about it watching this video. They're practically the same carb - but with double the barrels. Think I know what I did wrong this time. Thanks! Great vid!
Excellent quadrajet carburetor rebuild video.Plus i always wondered where the ball bearing(check valve) was located.Excellent information also on the power piston leveler adjustment(four turns from the bottom) count.Might be bedt to leave it alone to me.
I want to say thanks for the detailed process. You helped me rebuild my first Q-Jet today! I checked several videos and yours was the best. Good detail, to the point and no 5 minute intro or endless jabber between steps. My old truck runs like a bat out of hell right now thanks to the rebuild. To be honest the only thing I found seriously wrong was the tiny horseshoe clip that holds the power piston below the float was missing, which would explain the tremendous flooding problem I was having. At idle the exhaust fumes still burn my nose and I don't know why. I have the idle screws set to 2.5 turns and it idles well. Will check the timing and go from there but overall the 454 is fully awake again.
So nice to see someone who know what a great carburetor the Q--Jet is. Have fixed hundreds and can say after watching the video you got it down for sure. One of the best carbs ever made. Can be setup to work with just about any engine. Great for milage and performance too. Keep up the great work, V
@@MexhomieXlll The Q-jet is know for the best of both worlds, gas mileage and high power. I am certain you can fix the carb fella. Get a manual and read it and you will be fine.
Thank you so much , I'm mechanical but carbs are a mystery, had some anxiety took a Zen moment , deep breath ,then proceeded . My 79 Ramcharger has never ran so good since I rescued it from a field , thanks again TimT NY
Thanks for the detailed video. I rebuilt mine after watching your video. only took me about 6 hours. Mostly due to all the gunk in it. I decided to rebuild it because it started leaking gas from the accelerator pump. After researching it on the web i came to the conclusion that it was either my float or needle and seat. I replaced everything except the float. I cross checked the distance according to the instructions that came with the kit and they were pretty much spot on. I did notice though that when i moved the float up and down the needle didn't move. I reassembled it and it is still flooding out. I attached the needle to the float as per the instructions by just hanging it on the inside lip of the float arm and not through the holes. Should I visually be able to see the needle move when i move the float up and down? I made sure that the seat was all the way in and that i didn't forget to remove the old spacer. Out of the entire rebuild this is the only thing that was suspect. Thanks again.
I have rebuilt hundreds of Q-Jets in my day. When removing or installing the choke arm inside the body of the carb it is best to leave the rod on the arm. It helps when removing the choke arm. When reinstalling the choke arm it can hang on the rod and as you insert the shaft from the choke housing you can pivot the arm with the rod until it engages. Lots of memories from my auto mechanic days. The Q- Jet is my favorite carburetor. By the way Holley's suck.
Great vid. First QJet I did was in 197O ...took apart 3 times to check float level due to flooding out when trying to start. Turned out the float was saturated with fuel due to a small crack. They are not hollow like a brass float but are a foam type construction with a coating to keep the foam dry and buoyant. The weight difference would not alllow the float to rise up to close the needle snugly against the seat once the fuel, in the bowl, was at the correct level. Got a new float, adjusted height, reinstalled and a perfect startup. So, be sure to examine your float for chips or cracks. Hope this may help all those with post rebuild flooding problems. Best to you and yours.
Very helpful video. The next project for my 1978 C3 corvette was to overhaul the carburettor the accelerator pump was not working and the secondaries were not opening. The assembly tips were very helpful particularly for the power valve. When I reinstalled the carburettor after the rebuild the engine started first time with minimal cranking and ran extremely well. On the test drive there was an increase in power and the secondaries opened up well.
thanks for a very informative video, i got a carb off a 454 with no power spring ! wow! you touched on everything important, now i know -looking forward to more videos!!!
Thank you for this video! I am by no means a mechanic but your video made it very easy to follow and understand. I'm hoping to get my 85 silverado back up and running now.
great video I used to fear these carbs when I was young and they were in current use (had one on a 1975 Olds 350) but rebuilt my first one on a marine inboard (1988 Chevrolet 4.3 V6) and it really wasn't near as hard as I thought. Next time I'll have your vid running on my I-pad! Great tips.
I’m fearing one right now. Bought an old truck and the fuel tank has all kinds of trash in it, something must have made it through the fuel filters and into the carb. Doing research before I order a rebuild kit.
great. im about to rebuild mine out of my 8000 mile original 76 vanbulance I bought from a small city in oregon. carb cleaner on the outside makes it stumble. sat for 30 years and she runs good but sometimes not so much lol. thanks for the detailed vid. much appreciated
Thanks for the video, it sure helped out a lot. I just rebuilt a Rochester Quadrajet 7041211, after 26 years of setting up the car it was on is running again.
31:44 One of these rubber seals is placed behind the thermal spring bracket at the center of the choke housing (philips screw), the screw you said 21:35 not to mess with☝🏻Better you do🤷🏻♂️ Great vid! 💪🏻👍🏻
Great video, really appreciated the tips and tricks. Got an 85 C-10 with electronic choke quadrajet. Fired up in about 5 seconds. The rebuild fixed a number of problems.
Nice video, very thorough,Rochester Quadrajet, though complicated is by far the best 4 barrel carb ever and when tuned properly is the best in smoothness, power and economy,my other favorites are the Autolite 4100,Holley 4011 and Motorcraft F-2,but I'm using Quadrajets in everything for the past 35 years even in big block Fords and the results are always gratifying.I'd like to add a couple things you must do after installation besides what you already showed in the video:1-You have to adjust the idle mixture with a vacuum meter and engine running.2-You have to inspect the area below the secondary metering needles for cracks and distortions,if so you got to correct it and it's not easy.3-And once is up and running, all warmed up,you gotta debog the second stage. After that it's all good. Also I'd like to point out this new Summit carburetor is very good, not as sophisticated as a Quadrajet, but inexpensive, simple and it appears to work very well in some specific applications like Ford 289-302
+peter455sd Hey peter455sd thank you for the reply and the additional tips! I do need to get myself a vacuum gauge for proper tuning. I am not sure what you mean by "debog" though. Can you explain. Also are you referring to the Summit Quadrajet?
+Classic G-Body Garage No I'm talking about the Summit square bore www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-m08600vs?seid=srese1&gclid=CJaViOaD-csCFcNahgod60gC7A Now regarding to debogging it's basically adjusting the rear metering screw that controls the second stage opening in order to cut the gap between primary and secondary response under full throttle,it usually takes 4 passages, sometimes you gotta drive around for a couple days.I say 4 passages if you have stick shift if it's auto, assuming the kick down linkage is in good standing, you have to drive around for a couple days and fine tune the thing.Sometimes, something I never understood, the rear needles are not the right ones for the carb, too thin or too thick,i believe at some point Holley sold a tweak kit with several of those needles, but I never seen in-store.Anyways,once you do the debogging you reach maximum performance and economy.
Thank you for the time you spent to make this video. Very well detailed. Helped a lot. Sure it wasn't easy with having to explain and record this project. Probably would've took you 1/3 of the time to do this.
This video and narrative are a great guide for rebuilding a Q-jet. Kind of a shame about camera focus and size - old tech from 8 years ago. Maybe you can reshoot this again with a current phone camera, if you have another Q-jet needing a rebuild. 😎
Hey! Thank you so much for making this tutorial. Just rebuilt my first quadrajet for my ‘86 g20 van. I was a little hesitant to take this on but your step by step instructions were invaluable!
great video! just like anything else, you can get really good at this if you do it enough times. when i was 15 in 1979 i had a 69 chevelle with a 307 with a really bad carb and i was dead set on rebuilding it since it kept bogging out! I heard 2 older mechanics talking about how they "boiled" their carburators to get them super clean well, i went and got a big pot of water and took that carb apart and threw the whole bunch of parts in there!.. when i told my dad what was i doing and he almost died laughing. He explained to me that "boiling your carb" meant letting it sit in a "solution bucket" for a day. thats the part you are talking about at 30:20....the 2 or 5 gallon bucket of strong solution (kinda like really strong brake cleaner) for cleaning parts. true story. (to be honest, thats the cleanest carburator i ever had..even though the whole house smelled like gas and oil) after about the 3rd time rebuilding a Qjet, i could understand how it worked and how to fine tune it. again... this is probably the best Qjet video.
Love it man watched entire video my 76 chevy nova has the same carburetor it is running like a champ right now but Im sure on the future we will need to do this thanks man appreciate it super great video
Dude thank you so much for this. I'm rebuilding a Qjet for my Pontiac 400 right now. My local Napa did have the carb dip. HOWEVER! The carb body sections are slightly too big for the 1 gallon pale. Had to find a shoebox sized Tupperware container to soak everything in.

After watching this video I'm ready to rebuild the carburetor of my '85 GMC suburban 👍👌✅
Best rebuild video ever, completely disregarded the instructions that came with my rebuild kit and followed your video with great success. Thanks for quality video!
Glad it helped
Thanks!!!
Wow, thanks! Glad my video helped you out!
Thank you all for taking the time to watch my video. By the comments below it has helped many people. Please check out my channel for more how to videos. Thanks!
Can you help me out please ? i have a question , please reply as soon as you can .
What do you need help with?
Classic G-Body Garage
Thank you for your reply , the mixture screw have no affect at all , if my float level is way up high , would it affect the mixture screw in a way that would prevent it from mixing the air with the fuel ?????
Very cool! Love to hear this! Glad my video helped you. Thanks for watching
fantastic video.
Thank you. I really appreciate your feedback.
I have seen a bunch of people toss a good q jet because it develops an off idle stumble- i take their “bad” q jet - install a new accelerator pump plunger and go do burn outs- your video is the best rebuild i have watched so far- people dont realize their is only 2 q jet sizes 750 and 800cfm- GM used millions of these carbs on hot small blocks and big blocks that were very fast- they are still used today by guys that can tune them to run 9s in the 1/4 mile - that is screamin fast-
Outstanding. I followed you along and rebuilt a 76 Bette quadrajet that is on my olds 455 jet boat. I couldn’t have done it without you!🎉
I don't understand why this video doesn't have more views. I've been looking at rebuild videos for almost 3 hours now and this is the best one yet. Awesome job and very helpful. Looking forward to doing my first rebuild. 👍👍👍
Same here! This is the best video out there on it!
probably more a statement about the popularity of Qjets than the video itself
Theirs a ton of actual informal vids on these carbs, what to look for, how to fix/repair cause rebuild kits dont always fix the issue
Because working on and rebuilding carburetors is a art and sadly its getting lost
Great! Thanks for watching.
Excellent video! This was a big help. I've watched this probably 6 or 7 times. Just rebuilt the quadrajet for my 82 Blazer.
Those were the days when you can get your hands on your engine. Now, we are driving computers on wheels. Fantastic video!!!!
Thank you for this! I'm getting ready to do 2 Rochester Quadrajet carbs for my boat.
Nice! good luck!
great video! I have searched everywhere and haven't found a detailed video. I'm 17 and will be attempting to rebuild my quadrajet on my 1978 k10 tomorrow for my first time. this video is very detailed and will definitely help me out. Much appreciated!
Thanks man. It's very cool that someone your age is into old trucks. Take your time and enjoy your rebuild.
just wanted to let you know it was a success! my truck is running better than ever. I very much appreciate the help
I’m 16 and rebuilding my 79 c10 carb today😂
I'm 40 and still learning this and much more. I'm bringing an 85 K10 Suburban 5.7 350. It doesn't have this carb on it but I've had one of these sitting on a shelf for a few years after a friend's dad gave me it thinking it was for an 86 F-250 and I found out a bit later it wasn't. Now I know what to do with the dang thing. I appreciate this info.
You kids keep it up. We all should know this kinda work anymore.
How did it go, I got a 78 I’m completely rebuilding and doing the same thing
perfect video, Can't believe I paid someone to do this when I bought my first squarebody truck.
(6 or 8 spins or until shiney). the power VALVE will raise and lower more freely with vacum.and with time, heat cycles, and fuel vapors taking toll on rubber diaphragms
of choke pulloffs, always change pri. and sec. pulloffs ; always !!!
and don't forget too not over tighten carb bolts or studs, the carb already is trying too be sucked in engine. lastly when you remove carb too rebuild place a clean rag over carb. intake holes make sure too have a peanut (planters peanut) can too HOLD small parts, nuts. springs in. and when you get it started and running double check for gas leaks and seepage. note q jets best friends is a 5/8" line wrench and a 1" skinny offset OPEN end wrench.
if you or your mechanic uses a vise grip pliers on your carb. fuel line then you are DUMBASS.
Thanks!!!
Overhauled hundreds of these, good detail on what to look for and how to do it right.
Thank you !
PERFECT video. i have worked on small engine carbs, but never an automotive carb. i wasnt scared to tackle the task, but this with the help of this video.....it was a breeze. thanks for sharing
Very helpful. I like your straightforward approach. I'm restoring a 74 GMC motorhome with an Olds 455 with Quadrajet. Thanks again...
Nice! Thanks for watching.
I am getting ready to remove and rebuild a quadrajet carb and your video is AWESOME.
+Tim Lastname If it's bogging you might need to replace the accel pump but while your there you may as well rebuild the carb.
thanks for the heads up man. I just ordered one with the carb kit.
+Tim Lastname check the diaphragm that stops the secondary valve opening to quick, also try tightening the secondary air valve spring. check this video at 56.15 to test secondary air valve pulloff its incorrectly named a secondary choke pull off in this vid
.
Thanks for your comment. It means a lot!
This is what UA-cam is for. Excellent video sir. Thank you very much for taking the time to educate us.
Thank you for watching and for your kind comment. It helps fuel me to make more videos to help people out.
Great video i am going to attempt to rebuild my carb to my 1986 cutlass supreme. Thanks for the video i will be watch a few more times. Thanks again
Thank you for the video! Very informative and gave me the confidence to break down my Quadra jet and rebuild it.
Thanks so much for this tutorial. Tackled the rebuild with the help of this guide. Great results. boat runs and idles like new.
Nice!
Did not feel like an hour at all👍👍 great tutorial thank you
Excellent video. I used to be one of those who thought Quadrajet carbs were junk. Of course that was strictly due to my lack of knowledge and not the engineering of.the carb itself. Keep up the good work my friend and thanks for posting the video. Semper Fi!
Thank you!
Thank you for your time creating this video from a UK enthusiast. Answered a couple of questions I had on the Quadrajet.
Thank you for watching, commenting and supporting the Classic Gbody Garage Channel!
Best carburetor I've ever known, still want to get one to daily.
Have futzed around with my Dual-Jet (2 barrel) a number of times already, but I just learned so much more about it watching this video. They're practically the same carb - but with double the barrels. Think I know what I did wrong this time. Thanks! Great vid!
Thanks for watching!
Excellent quadrajet carburetor rebuild video.Plus i always wondered where the ball bearing(check valve) was located.Excellent information also on the power piston leveler adjustment(four turns from the bottom) count.Might be bedt to leave it alone to me.
Great video! I am rebuilding a Qjet off a 77 Corvette with 2 of my sons (16 and 14). Got the iPAD on the workbench and we study each of your moves.
Thank you so much
Sir, I successfully rebuild my carburetor of 1979. Very nice explain and detailed.
Glad it helped
I needed a refresher course on rebuilding my Quadrajet. I have your vid in my favorites. Thanks.
Great to hear!
Can u fix mine
@@MexhomieXlll The Q-jet is know for the best of both worlds, gas mileage and high power. I am certain you can fix the carb fella. Get a manual and read it and you will be fine.
Just rebuilt a carburetor for the first time, and it worked out great! Thank you so much for the great video.
Awesome! Glad my video helped!
Thank you so much , I'm mechanical but carbs are a mystery, had some anxiety took a Zen moment , deep breath ,then proceeded . My 79 Ramcharger has never ran so good since I rescued it from a field , thanks again TimT NY
Thanks for the best quadrajet rebuild video I have found.
and thank you for watching and commenting!
Thanks a ton now i can work on my 84 chevy c10 carburetor. Thanks also for being so detailed about everything keep up the good work.
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
Great Video!!!!! THANK YOU!!! I'M getting ready to do my 1963 buick skylark Rochester Quadrajet 4BC. THIS SHOULD MAKE IT A BREEZE... TY
Super good video man Got my old truck running Woulda been up shits creek without this video
This is the best video on how to take a chance on rebuilding it yourself also very clear vocabulary and friendly.3thumbsup!!! clean/clear 👍💯
Thanks for the tip! I also agree that Holley sucks and that is why I rebuild the Qjets. Great carbs. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
If we are talking about carbs that suck I want to add edlebrock to that list.

I know you have heard it a bunch already, but thank you for this vid. Helped me through a flawless first timer rebuild.
buntist Never get tired of hearing it.
Cool, thanks for watching
Thank you for this video! I am by no means a mechanic but your video made it very easy to follow and understand. I'm hoping to get my 85 silverado back up and running now.
Glad it helped
I rebuilt mine with reference of this vid...I did a great job
Love to hear this! Thanks for watching!
great video I used to fear these carbs when I was young and they were in current use (had one on a 1975 Olds 350) but rebuilt my first one on a marine inboard (1988 Chevrolet 4.3 V6) and it really wasn't near as hard as I thought. Next time I'll have your vid running on my I-pad! Great tips.
I’m fearing one right now. Bought an old truck and the fuel tank has all kinds of trash in it, something must have made it through the fuel filters and into the carb. Doing research before I order a rebuild kit.
@@Hammerback0 same, just picked up a 79 Stepvan , it’s running but running rich, I’m thinking it’s the carb ,
great. im about to rebuild mine out of my 8000 mile original 76 vanbulance I bought from a small city in oregon. carb cleaner on the outside makes it stumble. sat for 30 years and she runs good but sometimes not so much lol. thanks for the detailed vid. much appreciated
I'm about to rebuild an 82 Quad, Glad to of found your video Very well done, Perfect! Thank you!
Thank you and good luck! I am about to rebuild an 86

Awesome video! I just rebuilt the Quadrajet that was on my grandpa's 75 C10. Feels like a real accomplishment, and the step by step helped a ton!
Right on! Glad my video helped you out.
Excellent, clearly-expressed, very thorough video! Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Thanks for the video, it sure helped out a lot. I just rebuilt a Rochester Quadrajet 7041211, after 26 years of setting up the car it was on is running again.
Excellent! Thanks for watching.
Cheers for the demo it was very helpful. Cheers Kimbo west Australia.
Very good video he made it look easy very detailed thanks for sharing
The best video.... helped me rebuild my 1978 Chevy Scottsdale stepside carburetor thanks man
31:44 One of these rubber seals is placed behind the thermal spring bracket at the center of the choke housing (philips screw), the screw you said 21:35 not to mess with☝🏻Better you do🤷🏻♂️ Great vid! 💪🏻👍🏻
Great video, really appreciated the tips and tricks. Got an 85 C-10 with electronic choke quadrajet. Fired up in about 5 seconds. The rebuild fixed a number of problems.
Robert Hall Hey there. Glad the video helped you out!
Great video. Makes me wonder how in the hell they mass produced q-jets!
its like a puzzle that kicks ass and helps you go fast.
Probably would've took you 1/3 of the time to do this.
haha very true. It takes a long time to make and edit a video like this.
This video and narrative are a great guide for rebuilding a Q-jet. Kind of a shame about camera focus and size - old tech from 8 years ago. Maybe you can reshoot this again with a current phone camera, if you have another Q-jet needing a rebuild. 😎
Yeah I filmed this a while back with a cheap cam. I may do another as I am always rebuilding them. Thanks for watching!
Hey! Thank you so much for making this tutorial. Just rebuilt my first quadrajet for my ‘86 g20 van. I was a little hesitant to take this on but your step by step instructions were invaluable!
Love to hear how my videos have helped people out. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
Hey man! I got an 80 G20. You think the process is the same?
Thank you very much for taking the time to shoot this and walk us through it.
+Frog The Stoner Thanks for watching the video!
Very good job n smart knowledge , it's really excellent demonstration
I had learned a new experience
Thanks alot
Glad to hear that
great video!
just like anything else, you can get really good at this if you do it enough times.
when i was 15 in 1979 i had a 69 chevelle with a 307 with a really bad carb and i was dead set on rebuilding it since it kept bogging out!
I heard 2 older mechanics talking about how they "boiled" their carburators to get them super clean
well, i went and got a big pot of water and took that carb apart and threw the whole bunch of parts in there!..
when i told my dad what was i doing and he almost died laughing.
He explained to me that "boiling your carb" meant letting it sit in a "solution bucket" for a day.
thats the part you are talking about at 30:20....the 2 or 5 gallon bucket of strong solution (kinda like really strong brake cleaner) for cleaning parts.
true story.
(to be honest, thats the cleanest carburator i ever had..even though the whole house smelled like gas and oil)
after about the 3rd time rebuilding a Qjet, i could understand how it worked and how to fine tune it.
again... this is probably the best Qjet video.
Thanks for your comment and your great story! Love it!
Thanks man had a maunaul choke and couldn’t figure how to replace secondary cam you had one one this carb BIG THANKS
Love it man watched entire video my 76 chevy nova has the same carburetor it is running like a champ right now but Im sure on the future we will need to do this thanks man appreciate it super great video
Of course subscribed to your channel
Thank you.
Such a good tutorial. Dunno what i woulda done without you man. 77 Scottsdale 350 checking in, bout to drop this freshly rebuilt carb on top!
Glad to help
Dude thank you so much for this. I'm rebuilding a Qjet for my Pontiac 400 right now. My local Napa did have the carb dip. HOWEVER! The carb body sections are slightly too big for the 1 gallon pale. Had to find a shoebox sized Tupperware container to soak everything in.
Good to know was jus about start tearing mine apart to clean it an would if been stuck thanks for this
Glad I could help
Very nice video thanks a lot ! for all the details I like to rebuild my marine quadrajet for my boat
