Thanks for this history lesson about Rabbie. As someone who is from Kilmarnock i was brought up with only the works of Burns rammed down your throat and not the whole person
Wow, an entirely new 🆕 view of Robbie Burns, the great writer ( and Great Man)! Totally flabbergasted! Who'd have thunk ! Have to think about this one. Very Well Done ! Two " Wow" s !
Wonderful video, Bruce. My second Mum told me about Robert Burns when I was seventeen. I was too young to appreciate him at the time. As I've gotten older that's all changed. He really is the Bard of Scotland. Listening to Ae Fond Kiss gets me in the feels every time. All the best to you on your tour!
I was intrigued by the mention of Thomas Muir and watched the video :Scotland's Greatest Hero" but since that was several months ago I thought I'd use this more recent video to ask my question. Do you / or anyone know if Thomas Muir is any relation to John Muir (known in the US as the Father of National Parks). John Muir (1838-1914) was born in Dunbar Scotland and became a naturalist in the California / Oregon area "author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States." His story is interesting, and he was an admirer of Robert Burns and although he emigrated to America with his family "Muir never forgot his roots in Scotland. He held a strong connection with his birthplace and Scottish identity throughout his life and was frequently heard talking about his childhood spent amid the East Lothian countryside."
I wonder if John Paul Jones' sister, Janet Paul and watchmaker husband William Taylor (residents of Dumfries at the time) were subscribers to the building of the Dumfries theatre? John Paul Jones died in Paris in July 1792. Around the time of the theatre's September opening (and during the French revolution) Janet made her way to Paris to collect her brother's belongings.
It's so cool seeing the real cabin behind you. The Burns society in Atlanta,GA, USA, has an exact duplicate that they built in the early 20th century from plans drawn up by an architect near Ayrshire. But the drive and parking areas are gravel there, not cobbles.
A'reyt Bruce. Fascinating tale as usual. You got a couple of good plugs in for your upcoming show. Best wishes for that. Mind you, I keep noticing reaction videos recommended, saying UK plugs are best.
So much gravitas, you were born for the theatre! I dont know why but this video reminds me a lot of the St Crispin's Day Speech in Tombstone :) Thank you once again!
I intend being at TR in Sept to see you..still waiting on to see who is coming with me to get tickets...need a selfi too as my nephew in Littlehamoton ( a Scot) will be jealous..he actually introduced me to your work 😊😊
This is brilliant. I’ve seen some of your viral videos like the Glencoe massacre, but this is very good. Subscriber and notifications on now. Your passion is so intense I could almost see the fight happening behind you in the auditorium.
Iv literally just come across your channel...very good story telling (well most of us Scots love a gid blether eh😂) ...so looking forward to going through all your video's...hello from Perth Scotland 🏴🥃😂❤
I'm fae Perth masel. Are you comin' tae ma show at Perth Theatre in October? www.perththeatreandconcerthall.com/whats-on/bruce-fummey-stories-of-scotland-230002
Thanks Bruce another great video to lift the spirits on a Saturday. I just wonder what Burns would have made of the political situation now. Maybe it would be more like a football match in the 70s. 😮 Thanks again Bruce.
How very cool that you get to do your show in the same theatre that Robert Burns was a patron of! I'd love to sit on one of those benches original to it (if they still allow that) but I fear that your great story will be as close as I get. Scotland is still on my bucket list though!
You said, "If I had put on the show earlier, Roberts Burns would have set right there." Now, think about who IS sitting in your shows and subscribing to you channel. They may be unknown now, but may be the next thinker, philosopher, orator, leader, or revolutionary. You may unknowingly plant seeds that grow into big movements. After all, can anyone name the teachers of Burns, Payne, or Voltaire?
Crom’s teeth man…I could listen to you tell stories from sun up to sun down. It’s like some kind’a “Neil Oliver” level genjutsu, that compels you to pay strict attention. Anyway…that was good watchin 👍
I just checked out that song Burns referenced in his tribute to the Rights of Women. JEEZ, I thought the lyrics of The Marsilles were a bit bloodthirsty.
The Lord Queensbury referred to would be the 4th Duke, also known during his scandalous life as "Old Q". He was a notorious rake and gambler---and th se were the least of his outrages.
Did you hear about this about buymeacoffee they stopped helping the UA-cam channel Police activity and they said it's wasn't a good channel, but after a huge backlash of people going somewhere else for support they backtrack and the CFO said it was blah blah blah 🤬🤦🏻♀️ and decided to reinstate them.
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Okay I thought I would mention it to you, and be careful of using the self checkout at any store because I just read a article about some credit card scammers that are hitting Walmart and other stores. This is why I don't like them and I usually use cash or gift cards.
An interesting notion, the one and only 'Rabbie' warming a pew at a Bruce Fummey do. He may even have been inspired. Although nobody rocks the 'dready' like you do Brucey😁.
Ahh Bruce buddy, I hate tae be the one to point oot a wee mistake. In "randy" Rabbie's letter to wee Lulu I'm sure it actually ends "Let majesty first yer attention summon, c'om tae Dumfries fae cheeky wee pumpin'." If memory serves he sent this before "hookin up" with Highland Mary.....talkin bout Mary-doll, looking forward to yer show on the 1st September in Dunoon burgh Hall just across the castle gardens ("Cassie gardens" to local yokes like masel) from the statue of Mary looking longingly across the Clyde towards her beloved Rabbie. Furthermore during the ruckus in the theatre Rabbie reportingly said "HO!!! Marquis rules this, ya bass!" Only seconds before "sticking the nut" in 'um, & afterwards started chanting "YOUR GOIN HAME IN A F*€KIN AMBULANCE!!" Robert Burns...poet, lover,...football "casual"?🤔😂😂😂. Ta the next time, fair thee way pal👍
Though there, his heresies in Church and State. Might well award him Muir and Palmer's fate: Still she undaunted reels and rattles on, And dares the public like a noontide sun
To add a bit more historical perspective to Burns' "The Rights of Woman." In 1789 "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen," was published in France. Thomas Paine borrowed from that title and from the content for his, "The Rights of Man" defending the principles of the French Revolution in 1791. Also in 1791, Olympe de Gouges, a feminist French playwright and pamphleteer, published "Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Citizen in response to the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Burns' sympathies being what they were, he may have been aware of it or even read it. As with so many supporters of the ideals of the French Revolution, Olympe de Gouges became a victim of the guillotine in 1793.
Hopefully my great great great or something like that grand father William gregg might have helped craft those rebellious manners when he wiz pals way wee rab and was his manners and fiddle teacher
Yep. Nothin much changed... With competing choruses at Parkhead, Ibrox - or Hampden, pity that all the while, whether Holyrood, Westminster - or Buckingham Palace, all the ordinary folk these days ("there for honest poverty") have only to be just swallowed up by either the dictates of Brussels, the pandering of Edinburgh - or the wiles of Washington DC!
@@ScotlandHistoryTours when you consider the Scots are talking about another round... and consider we yanks set a precedent that enabled other countries to gain home rule without the level of violence we had.
'God save the ' is less of a national anthem, more a dirge. Never a tune, there. Good story as ever. (Btw, that cover pic of Burns having a go reminds me of a punching puppet I have; a Shakespeare one. You have wee paddles to make it punch. It is very funny. Nothing to do with the story, but amuses the lads and lasses in the pub)
Interesting to hear that "god save the unelected parasite" started (and continues?) as a nationalists (britnat) song, sung on the equivalent of football terraces. Our own "flower of Scotland" is looked down on as not being a national anthem, just a nationalists rabbles song . Seems they are more similar than some would like to accept 🤔

I do believe Robby would have been very proud of that unbelievable ending; so eloquent, tugged all my heartstrings.
Great stuff. Rebels and dissenters - love them. Shared. Keep it up.

Don't worry Bruce - even locals struggle to find parking in Dumfries these days 😂 thanks for taking the time to visit and hope you enjoyed yourself 😊
