You exploit the sea, the sea exploits you at a certain point. As for Syria, if you read about their history in Wikipedia, you will know that Syrian forces invaded Palestine and also during the World War I, they formed alliance with Soviet Union and did try to capture lot of nearby nations. All these are those karmic give-backs that we are witnessing now.
