  • This is not serious diet advice, and this is not a weight loss diet… this is what an Anglophile will consume in 24 hours if they have no regard for proper nutrition and weight management!
We decided to do this delicious binge whilst staying in the lovely market town of Tavistock in Devon, near the border with Cornwall. It was a very delicious and fun day that included all the English favourites… especially if you include what we ate the NEXT day as well!
Please subscribe to follow along with our travel adventures, culture videos, and taste tests. Check out the videos that I mention in the video via the links below. Cheers! XX Dara

Derbyshire is definitely a place we need to further explore (I have ancestors from Derby). We've driven through the Peak District a couple of times on our way to other places and both times the scenery was lovely. I recall driving the A57 down to Manchester and thinking that we need to take some time to check out this area with its forested hills and reservoirs. So far our only real experience in the area has been Chatsworth and Bakewell which is well worth the 2.5 hour drive from our flat in Gloucestershire.

I am impressed . The drive to Looe from Tavistock is quite a trip taking in Gunnislake but you are rewarded with the beautiful scenery on the way through the valley and one of Sarah's pasties , which come as close to the old recipes as any , and a beer in Looe . Top crimp , raised crimp ,side crimp and number of actual crimps is not written down anywhere and as with the Cornish mile and pronunciation of Cornish place names they are intended to trap unwary tourists and have become the myth of legend , like so much of Cornwall today .
I lived in the furthest flung part of Cornwall ( where the film ' Straw Dogs ' Dustin Hoffman and Susan George was made and shown annually at the cinema in Penzance for decades ) and they are probably the exponents of winding up tourists .
This was the district of Cornwall where the last speakers of Kernewek , the Cornish language was spoken and the only place that made pasty pies decades ago .
A true English breakfast how my Mum used to cook it ( a House Cook in Chelsea back in the 1930s) , included devilled kidney and black pudding , and no baked beans ( very much a WW2 introduction from your neck of the woods but loved ever since - I love Boston baked beans and clam chowder by the way - but not mixed together though ! ) which may sound gross and definitely no no for vegies , but the flavour of black pudding with tomatoes and buttered toast is really delicious and rich . The Cornish have a white pudding or hogs pudding which is entirely different . More like a bland polony that takes up flavour when cooked in a sauce .
Fish and chips in Cornwall is great , but you will not find certain fish on the menu . What we call ' Rock Salmon ' ( Lesser Spotted Dogfish ) and 'Rock Eel' ( Conger Eel ) is not available . The Cornish won't eat it , not even on Tom Bawcocks Eve when they " supped on sebem (7) sorts of fish " , but is either dumped or sent up country to the London markets . Its a delicious fish when treated properly ( aired a couple of days to remove the ammonia smell ) is pure muscle with a single cartridge bone . The fishermen always dropped some off on my doorstep to cook myself . I could help myself to a variety of fish at Newlyn Market too as I knew Skipper Robert Stevenson and have had the pleasure to take the wheel of his trawler PZ185 on testing to Tater Du light and back to Penzance Harbour .
Tavistock is a short trip from Dartmoor and we would take the long route back to Cornwall have a few beers in Widdecombe and park up on one of the Tors on a clear night and watch the shooting stars until first light . Two Rivers a beautiful place for a morning paddle on warm days . Then on through Tavistock , Tamar Valley , Callington ( avoiding the Ginsters factory !) eventually picking up the A30 .
When you return , try to arrange your trip around one of the Feast Days of the Cornish saints , St .Agnes ( with their Pasty Company and Mortons bakery ) , St . Just , St. Ives , St. Mawgan etc , which are a hoot and last as long as you can stand up , with lots of food , sports , fun and games and plenty of booze of course .

I would like to know when beans on toast was made part of a full English break fast! Traditionally the full English has a list of ingredients broken into three courses just like a dinner menu.
    1. Starters
    Cereal with milk
Porridge (rolled outs boiled water or milk then cream [try whiskey snuck in])
    Yoghurt with fruit
    Fruit juice
    2. Cooked food (just listed)
    Bacon (unsmoked or smoked)
Sausage (variety of types, Lincolnshire, pork, beef and now veg [just examples])
    Black pudding
    White pudding
    Kidneys
    Kippers (smoked fish)
Eggs (all the different varieties of prepared egg)
Tomatoes (all the different varieties [normally tinned Italian plum])
    Beans
Bubble and squeak (usually made from the previous days leftover potatoes
and maybe fried onions, fried usually lightly flavoured with beef or pork
dripping up like a lumpy stodgy pattey. this is where your fried hash brown
things came from, British mums needing not to waste anything during the wars
    3. Toast
Best fresh thick slices white bread
    Whole grain
    French baguette. (If you must)
    Real butter. Normally slightly salted
All the different jams (American jelly’s) you can think of
Marmite (always, always just a scraping on the butter)
    Pastries (if you must)
Theoretically this is the English breakfast menu you could choose from some times odd ideas from people just get added somehow spinning it into things like beans on toast which normally is eaten for tea time (around 6pm) not to be mixed up with high tea (around 3pm for tea crumpets, tiny cakes and delicate finger sandwiches [two slice sandwich crusts cut off and quartered])

Crack the box (we don't do boxes round here), or loosen the paper to let excess steam out. I always get my fish separate, and tear a corner off the wrapper to let the steam go. Also Christa, how did your pineapple become a veggie when deep fried? So many questions. When will Coke bring Coke Zero Vanilla to me in the US? Oh and I'd die for the clotted cream rhubarb. Yum!!! The tin miners had ate the dessert and savory pasty on one, but Dara can give you a better explanation than my pathetic attempt.
If I remember correctly, the cashier in the chippy said if we didn’t add golden syrup to the pineapple fritter, it was basically a vegetable 🤣
Yes please, Vanilla Coke Zero in the states!! When will be worthy?!

Sharisa, I was also confused about the vegetable comment! 😂
Allegedly when the miners would take a pasty for lunch to eat down in the mines, the original ones had a savoury course and then a little pastry divider and a dessert course on one end. I just think it’s very novel! But eating two pasties (one savoury and one sweet) is pretty awesome! I had never had a dessert pasty before… big fan now! It’s like a fried fruit pie in the south 🥧😉

Nice portion control on the english breakfast, i personally would have swerved the carby beans and thrown in a 97% or higher pork sausage. Would love to try a cornish pasty made there! There was some controversy a while back that pasties made elsewhere could not be called cornish but that seems to have since been overlooked! Ordering a pasty a day in advance? Wow, what a place! Think im with Ian on the whole pasty thing, it would have to be truly exceptional to put up with all that crust! The ice creams looked delicious, you are certainly getting the weather down there! Wow, well done on the steps, thats a great achievement. The fish looked freah and great as did your choice of sauces, the majority of the chips looked like they had been cooked more than once but im sure they were still tasty. Ooh, i love a pineapple fritter, not had one for years, thats going on my list to try in the very near future! Thanks for the reminder. Looks like a fun day!

@@MagentaOtterTravels your right, we nearly always avoid bread. English breakfast we do have nearly every day and yours looked exceptional! Id try a cornish pastie in Cornwall for sure. Always partial to a spot of ice cream and we do eat fish and chips on occasion, i have been known to be the person to send chips back though if they have been cooked more than once. I’ll let other cooking mistakes go but if taking a hit on chips they better be cooked first time from potato to order or i turn into the super grouch. My favourite bit was you guys trying the pasties and sheltering in the rain, that really sold the whole video, we’ve all been there, it’s quintessentially british and it put us right there with you. Pineapple fritters in golden syrup? I used to have them all the time and had completely forgotten about them. It wont be long before i am eating those again. Thanks for the reminder! ♥️

@@GENerationXplorers Yes, I totally agree with you! At the time I was not happy about the rain and hated having to huddle next to a smelly trash bin. However, it was the funniest part of the video!
About the chips, I think that’s really interesting… i’ve had other subscribers tell me that chips should be cooked twice to be extra crispy! My biggest complaint lately is chippies who are so busy they don’t cook the chips long enough. They are rather anemic looking and not very golden brown…
But for now we are back on our healthy eating plan until our sons get here and a little over a week. Protein shakes for breakfast, lots of fruits and veggies throughout the day! If you want to see what I drink for a protein shake, I have a homemade one I do six days a week. I have a video on my channel explaining how I make it. I don’t like protein powders, so I have my own version I make from scratch. It’s really crazy!

      @GENerationXplorers 2 роки тому

@@MagentaOtterTravels oh gosh, dont get me started on anaemic chips, ive had those once too! They were dreadful. Its a fine line. I know of a few chippies that i can rely on to cook potatoes upon request and make great chips but whenever im in a new area and in the market for chips i do stalk the customers in the area to see how their chips are being cooked! I know you eat healthy 99.999% of the time, just a cursory look at you or Ian shouts volumes towards that, which makes your indulgence videos even more entertaining and enjoyable, well done you! Right, im hunting down your protein shake video to learn a thing or two from you. Will pass the time as my post birthday, keto full english is getting prepped! ♥️♥️

I'm from Torquay, but my mother's mother lived in Devonport, and every time we visited for the day she gave us enormous pasties with a top crimp. We never called them 'Cornish' or 'Devon', and, since Devonport is just across the Tamar from Cornwall, I always assumed that 'Granny in Plymouth' was Cornish and was giving us Cornish pasties. Very many years later, I did a bit of family history research and discovered that she wasn't Cornish, or even Westcountry, at all, despite her strong accent - she was born in Holloway, London, and lived there at least until she was 12!
But there were indeed once tin mines in Devon - Tavistock is a 'stannary town'. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stannary?wprov=sfla1.
