Resident Evil Outbreak is a survival horror game set in the Resident Evil universe, released by Capcom in 2003 for the PlayStation 2. Unlike traditional Resident Evil games, Outbreak focuses on cooperative multiplayer gameplay, allowing up to four players to team up and survive the zombie-infested Raccoon City.
The story unfolds through five standalone scenarios, each featuring a different group of ordinary citizens trapped during the T-virus outbreak. Players must solve puzzles, manage scarce resources, and fight their way through hordes of zombies and other bio-organic threats. The game introduces a real-time infection meter, which gradually increases, creating a sense of urgency as players attempt to escape before succumbing to the virus.
Each character has unique abilities-such as lockpicking or stronger melee attacks-that can help the team survive. Despite its single-player option, Resident Evil Outbreak's appeal lies in its cooperative gameplay, which was enhanced through online play, making it one of the first Resident Evil titles to feature online multiplayer.
