Building a Bench with the Ballast Regulator and Hi Lift at MP 8
Вставка

- Lot's of ballast regulator action in this video as we are building a
bench along side the track at MP 8 to set new rail on. Regulator will
shove the ballast out away from the track, and then the Case hi lift will
shove that further away from the track. After the bench is completed
then take a ride up track on the back of my ballast car.

Another fun video. Thanks Dave! Always like seeing the less known workings of the railroad! Good to see 3098 putting in a little MOW work as well.

Considering the land the track was built on, bench building would be about the only way to store "supplies" along the track. Excellent job, Dave.

Thank you Mr. Dave, for explaining rail bed work. Your Videos are very informative for an old guy like me, who often wonders how things work. I am 72 yrs old and always learning. Just to show you, do not ever stop learning. I got my Doctorate in Theology at the age of 70, so always be teachable and continue to learn. Had I not drove 18 wheelers for 35 years and Pastored and started churches for last going on 44 years, I would had been an engineer or conductor, love trains that much, But growing up the closest rail office for trains was over 500 miles away from my home. I just was not in my Booklet of life, My Wife tells me all the time, She says: "I will be hauling people around Heaven either by truck or train, LOL." Mr. Dave, you have a wonderful day, stay dry, bunch of rain and snow heading to your area today: 1-9-24. Later, my Friend.
Thank you for the really nice comment RevHarry. What a really inspiring story! That's awesome. Quite an interesting diversion, driving
truck and being a pastor. One of our train operators here also
pastors a non denominational church in his time away from the RR. Very much appreciate your taking the time to write in and watch the building a bench video my friend.

I ran a Ballast Regulator most of my career on the KCS railroad! I retired in November 2020 after 41 plus years! I miss running railroad equipment but I don’t miss the Class 1 railroad rules and management!😊
Thank you for the nice comment Bruce. Maybe you can pay us a visit and share your expertise with the guy running the regulator sometime!

Thanks Dave very interesting video👍👍
Thank you for the nice comment Russell, glad you enjoyed. Very much appreciate your taking the time to write in and watch the building a bench video my friend.
It was great to see how the regulator can move the ballast around. It looks like it will not slip as the load gets too heavy. I think you showed it is a hydraulic drive so is why the engine is not labouring as the weight increases. The bench will make it a lot easier to load rails, good job. My SD 38 is in IL so on its way over the pond soon

TOWBOAT DARLANE B.,,,,,we pik up 6 barge loads of coal from C-MINE,, and take most of it to LaBELLE,, to be shipped CHINA,, MONONGAHELA RIVER, towboater
LaBelle where? Thanks. All google gets me is Florida on the canal through lake Okeechobee, the cross Florida barge canal. Used to see paddle wheel tows going down the Mon. by the old Lock 4.
Look up Fredricktown Pa. Alro, our facility we unload barges at and
then load the coal on CSX trains is at LaBelle, about a half mile
up river from Fredricktown. It's on the opposite side of the river
from Fredricktown. Vesta mine used to be there. The little town of
Vesta is across the river from our LaBelle facility.
We do appreciate your hard work in transporting our coal Roger. Be safe out there on the river. River is getting higher and higher right now

Pretty neat work there! Looks really nice. That's for a delivery of some sticks of rail?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed Trena. Yep we built that to store new
rail on when it gets delivered so it will be close to the track and the
grapple truck can grab the rail while the truck is sitting on track. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video my friend.
Happy wonderful 2024 start to you Dave. It sure seems the new year will be busy with repairs left and right. The greatest challenge in my eyes is the depressions that are to do soft ground and swamps. Upon the railway was once build. Now as far as my understanding goes and they just filled the depressions in until it was even or ground level. But over time the foundation would start to slowly sink to do heavy freight cars and erosion?
Thank you, may you also have a great new year in 2024 SuperMAZ. You are right, the excavating company that build the track bed just filled in many places and never compacted anything except with a
dozer. We have had numerous problems over the years because
of that. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video my friend.
@@ccrx6700Thanks Dave. I'm convinced the line currently under repairs will be much safer and better for freight trains. Today we have machines to compact the soil and filling materials. In the very old days people had to do all that by hand. Thats why some older foundations at some point became unstable in swampy areas. You could actually see the rails would take a certain curvature up or down in places where the foundation started to move. Have a bit of sad news as well. Our local railway company called OPERAIL scrapped 40 old GE C36 locomotives. A era on the railway came to a end.
@@SuperMAZ007 sad to hear of the scrapped locos 😭
me too :( @@ccrx6700 They where old Union Pacific locomotives from the 80s.I don't know why the company decided to scrap so many of them. 9 remained in service and about 60 arrived in 2002.
that flat will sure make it convenient to lay track in a spot close to a good pick up spot for laying down
where it is needed. so often it is hard to find a good spot that will work well for everyone. place the rail

main purpose of doing this was to have a place close to the track
to store rail or ties on so the grapple truck can be on the track and
just load the materials from the bench. The only compaction was
running over it with the loader. No need for more just to store
rail on. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video my friend.
🚂🚂🚂
Thank you, glad you enjoyed watching it Tom. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video my friend.
That things is underpowered. Take your loader, and with the bucket turned up a little, simply back drag the rock and smooth out what's beyond his reach.
Surprised that it got enough traction with those little wheels to move/scrape as much as it did.
Yes it is an older regulator with small engine and small wheels William,
sure would be nice if we had a bigger one like a Kershaw 925, but
we don't so have to use what we got. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video my friend.
I'm just curious Dave, is the plan to line the shelf with ties for the rails to sit on or will the just be placed right on top of the shelf as is there at the end?
A few ties will be placed on top of that bench to lay the rail on Scotty,
but it will not be lined. We are getting new rail in this Tuesday and
i will video that so you can see how it's done, but who knows when
I will get that video published. Supposed to be 9 degrees here that
morning! Very much appreciate your taking the time to write in and watch the building a bench video my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Ok, I figured at least a few strategically placed ties would be beneficial. It does seem that the new shelf will make things more efficient. Brrrr brrrr brrrr 🥶 9° is plenty cold enough. Stay warm. I'll be watching when that one hits the airwaves. 🤠👍
Hey Dave, I've heard that they don't actually change the oil in locomotives. It's just slowly added into the fuel and burned off. Is this true? What about filter changes? Thanks.
It's been a long long time since we've changed oil in one of our
locos here Brian. Many RR's very seldom change oil in their locos
either, same with filter changes. Very much appreciate your taking the time to write in and watch the building a bench video my friend.
Thank you for this nice video!
Would some filler like clay hold the ballast together and keep mud out?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed watching it Robin. We could have used
some fill dirt to build this and then put gravel on top, but management wanted it all gravel for whatever reason, sure cost a lot more to do that way! Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video my friend.
Bench, I thought you were going to make yourself a little rest area.
Well we kind of need one of those there shopshop! I may have to
branch out and expand this channel to include a wood working section next year....:-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to write in and watch the building a bench video my friend.
Can hunters park near your buildings as they walk to hunt or do they need to park farther away?
Some park near the entrance to our harbor and some park outside
the gate at our MP 8 siding. None of them actually get near the
buildings Shirley.
How do you keep the rail level on a long straight away ? I seen some do this with laser ?
Since I don't have laser equipment on the tamper, I pretty much do what I can by eye Keith. If need be I could bring in my laser transit and shoot the track to see exactly where it is low, and have done that a few
times in the past. But for a slow speed RR like we have doing it by
eye works well enough. If this was a high speed track then
things would be different and I would be more precise. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video and writing in my friend.
Can you please explain to me how you can measure trek curve using the term angle. I am an engineer, and we always have to use radius, and the angle would be the length of the curve
Take a 100 foot chord on the arc of a railroad curve. Then take the
radius from both ends of that chord to the center of what would be
a circle if the curve went a complete circle. The degrees between
the 2 radii is the degree of curvature. That is good enough for RR
work. If you were shooting a rocket to the moon then there is a
mathematical formula to figure out exact degree of curvature which
I'm sure you already know. Hope that explains it for you. Very much
appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench

Doesn't deer hunting begin the next day in PA? I used to live there and places would clear out while everyone went deer hunting.
They have changed opening day date since you were here Nolan. It
used to always be on Monday, but changed that in an effort to get
more hunters out on opening day. Very much appreciate your taking the time to write in and watch the building a bench video my friend.
I forgot to ask, can you regulate the speed that the ballast comes out of the railroad car?
Yes the doors open via air over hydraulics. Air off the loco runs a
hydraulic pump, then pulling a lever the doors can be adjusted to regulate the flow of the ballast out of the cars depending on how far you open the doors up Robert.
sounds like you need too grease that loader
It's old and has some creaky noises Greg, but actually it was
greased about a month ago and not many hours on it after that
was done.
Actally high time to go to bed but resisting Your video.... not happening.
It looks like a rather slow process. Wouldn't it pay off to hire more efficient machines? Moving ballast sideways in that small amount..... Okey, I know You're not the CEO.....
Cheers Dave!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed Stefan. It would be nice if we had a
bigger regulator but since we don't have to work with what we've got on hand. If I was CEO this railroad would be a showcase....:-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video my friend.
Seems as if the loader would have been quicker
Perhaps it would have been Tim, but I had to keep my buddy
working or else he would have taken a nap.....:-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to write in and watch the building a bench video my friend.
Know what’s amazing metro north workers don’t do any of this work it’s all outside contractors..from other states
I think if some in management had their way a lot of the track
work would be done by contractors here too Sunshinemano. Lucky
we have a union that keeps a lot of the jobs away from contractors.
Very much appreciate your taking the time to write in and watch the building a bench video my friend.
What the heck is a high lift? You mean a loader?
Yes sir a loader, we call them hi lifts around here, but you got
it right Eric. Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the building a bench video my friend.
American railroad is the laziest and dumbest of the whole world.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us John. Appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video.
Nice building something new
Thank you, it was an interesting diversion Wayne. Seems like there is always a new adventure going on here doing something or other. :-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the building a bench video my friend.
