    I'm not in the market for a new preamp at this time. A nice eq(likely ssl) and maybe a another compressor is on my list currently. But wit all the research I've done over the last couple years. This sounds and looks to be one of the best. Especially at the price point. I would definitely invest in one of these if I needed a preamp. Great review! Thanks!

    So I upgraded my interface a while back and have really loved it. I’m using the Apollo X4
    But I heard there’s no way to truly bipass the preamps on it. If I were to get a unit like this would I need to find another interface?
    Is there a way I could combine an outboard preamp with the unison slot and use my 1176 plugins?
    I understand not everyone is about the unison tech but for my budget it has worked well for me, I’m just wondering how much I can build on top of it as a foundation or if it’s better to just start from scratch and use the Apollo and it’s plugins for more mobile applications

    Excellent Option. Did you have a Gate engaged while recording the voice on this video? When you engage the lift function, the floor noise a little bit but when the voice enters, the noise floor disappears. If so, what gate are you using. Thank you.

    Holy F**k I Drool 4 Drawmer. & as always what a well thought out piece of gear. Only thing I could think to tweak perhaps is maybe an extra knob to move or recenter the tilt buttons (but whatever with all these great features). I love the 6dB stepped gain section, and wouldn’t this be nice combined with their 1976 Saturation box.. thanks for sharing David!

    It’s hallowing to hear 🧚‍♀️Bella’s dry vocal.
    This unit really brings it to the polished pop sound quickly… as a naturalist it’s good to hear that raw sound from her heart.
    The unit is such a amazing tool separate from that.
    In it’s price range it’ll make a great multiple preamp expansion to record entire bands from a studio that maybe only had a couple very sort after ones for those coupe mics they have.
    I’m definitely thinking about a few of these as a studio expansion.
    I wouldn’t be saddened at all if these were my only preamps though.
    It has such a great sound, or Bella’s just sells it well… hahaha joking, I luckily can hear through that.
    Thanks for bring another great thing into sight David.
    Still, more and more love and appreciate your channel

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  Рік тому

      No you always plug microphones into mic input, if you have a tube mic where the PS provides the phantom power, you simply don't use the 48v on board (of the unit). The impedance is meant for ribbon mics but you can try and using it with any other mic as a tone tool

    I have just ordered one. Will compare it with the Great River 1NV and ISA One. I hope Drawmer 1972 will win. Though I am attracted to the special features (specially the lift function) and it's 2 channels (in order to also use it for mastering or adding subtle character to different stereo tracks), in the end it's the sound on vocals (and Bass/E-Git) that will define the winner...Drawmer rocket could hit straight into the gap ..the special, tiny spot that's exactly the right sound for me..a quite neutral but warm sound, still having a subtle character. ..less "dirty" and brighter/lighter than Great River (which is maybe a bit to heavy and dark for me) and higher class and more musical / with more character and smoothness than ISA which has a certain, lovely sweetness but lacks definition and tightness in my opinion... I will hear...

      Thank you Luigi. The preamp is of course very different than all you mentioned, which are very different one another with API being the punchiest, Germ being the more vintage sounding and the 73 being an in-between. The 1972 is warm and fuzzy, not too detailed but very flattering because of that. Plus the extra features are very useful in real life use. You can't beat this for the price. If you want to hear the preamp you can watch my 1970 video (same preamp without the extra features) ua-cam.com/video/xwNw0_1LtCM/v-deo.html

      @@barneyrubble8255 it really depends on what is needed. For vocals I usually take Isa One, which is fairly clear, but has some nice vibe. For guitars I like Great River but also Looptrotter or even built-in preamps of new SSL interfaces (2+). GAP 73 pres also sound pretty "colourful" when pushed.

    I tested the "Drawmer 1972" a few weeks ago but I sent it back. It was not was I was looking for. But it is a great piece of gear!
    Here is my full review (just my personal opinion and just considering my recording situation):
    It's built very well, the buttons etc have a great feel and the device itself has a sophisticated and high-class "aura". I recorded some vocals with a Gefell m930 microphone (male higher baritone voice) and placed them in mixes of songs.
    The special features like the lift function weren't useful for me. I got better results by using waves vocal rider and compression plug-ins. The shape function as well.. I just checked out the pure sound of the pre-amp. It sounds very "clean, sober, "mint", natural, dynamic with a very smooth high-end. On the one hand I really liked the high-end but on the other - when over-exagered (shape function) or volume turned up very loud - the high-end sounded a bit rough, like shards or nearly like a bit-crusher...
    The sound appeared to be wide in the stereo image and was not really centered/focused. It was just there without a fixed point where it sprung from in the stereo panorama, as well as in depth.. Somehow like a ghost... (Great River and BAE DMP 1073 did have this centered definition) ...The Drawmer somehow reminded me of the "after eight" chocolate or an artist who just does carbon-painting. That's the way the drawer sounds to my ears.
    If you're looking for that it is great. But if you are looking for a tight, centered and more outlining vocalsound the drawer is not the right one. At least in my opinion. Even mixed with vocal rider, compressor etc... the Great River Pre-Amp always had more punch, warmth, outline but less sophistication, and less smooth high-end (a bit less) . But I also sent back the great river. Both were not was I was looking for. Looking for something in between ...
    The Drawmer sounded better than ISA One (just my opinion)
    But anyway I liked the Dawmer, but it didn't make sense to me to keep it.

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  Рік тому

      Just to be clear: you recorded a mono vocal and you found it being wide in the stereo image and not centered?

    • @hammerscheich
      @hammerscheich Рік тому

      @@mixbustv yes, exactly. I just re-listened the tracks I recorded with it. At first sight (listen) I thought "I've just posted false wrong claims" but I compared it to Great River and ISA One again (on headphone...weeks ago on headphones, monitors, in the car, on the smartphone...). And im comparison to the other two preamps the signal is really lacking a centered "home". First you listen it feels like there is some fixed point in the middle...but if you really focus on it, there is no center. Somehow spooky..a bit like the fact that there is no middle in anything. You can never be in the real middle of anything in a dual world/universe. Somehow the great River manages to create "more solid ground" ..it is just tighter in the lows and mids.... The drawmer's signal is in the middle...it is not as wide as artificial imaged vocal track or synth-pads or what ever...but it's not as centered as other mic-pres.
      Listend to it one more time: I recorded vocals in a booth. In the booth the drawmer delivered a more centered sound, but not as centered as the Great River. I also recorded vocals in an not really treated living room (quite big but it sounds totally ok). In this case the drawmer sounded really wider. But the Great River still stood strong in the middle.
      But in the end: it just very very subtle but it is just not the sound I prefer. And maybe it's also depending on the mic....

    Hey David... don't know if you're answering questions like that from the UA-cam comments, but I thought I give it a shot...... I am recording rap vocals in my treated room.... my tube mic (T-Bone SCT2000), goes through the PreSonus Bluetube V2 (Tube Pre-Amp) into my Interface/mixer hybrid (Allen&Heath ZEDi10)... Everything is a budget solution so far, but it does the job in a (for me) satisfying way... But I still want to optimize and this is where my question comes into play: What part of the chain would you optimize first? I am considering a. adding a nice hardware compressor for minimizing the needs of vocal-riding and adding even a bit more color b. exchanging my Preamp for one that sounds "better" and includes a compressor or c. getting a channel strip for having more options going into the box (EQ, Comp, De-Ess etc)..... I love the mic itself, because it already gave me a sound that I really liked before I added a preamp

    Thanks for the amazing review David! This was a great video, however there were a few things I couldn't tell from the review. For one what is the character of this pre-amp? Does it have any interesting saturation or mojo, or is it a very clean and neutral pre? Personally I can't tell from these isolated examples, I need to hear side by side comparisons of the same vocalist or instrument going through a few different pres, for instance a Neve style, an API style and maybe something very clean like a UAD Apollo, to function as a pallet cleanser. With that context I find I can actually get a sense of the tone of the pre-amp. It would also be cool to hear it driven to the max to exaggerate the character, even into over driven territory, I'm always curious about that :)

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  2 роки тому

      It is colored if pushed, that's why the output trim is there. I did record a couple of examples with low and high gain settings but I thought it was too long and boring.
