Maria is not the most powerful player in women's tennis but I love how in these tight, high stakes matches she swings herself out of her shoes. She goes for EVERYTHING! Safina really kept her nerve together
I don't care what anybody says, Sharapova is a better player now than she was before the shoulder injury. Her serve may not be as good as it once was, but overall her game has become much more consistent. She's developed a more effective game plan, added some shots she didn't have before, and significantly improved her movement. Take today's Sharapova and put her in this spot and no way would she have lost this match.
i agree! Sharapova is a much better player after her 20 minute shoulder scan. She keeps getting better and better and better, but she keeps losing and losing and losing to SERENA WILLIAMS lol Seriously, how does one keep getting better but keeps losing?
lol and thats the thing, she isn't even cute. I do not understand why they think she is cute.. she's F ugly... if anyone is cute, it's Serena & Ivanovic.
Safina was a great player, just unlucky with injuries, wish her well though. I used to follow her like crazy along with Chakvetadze, Dementieva, Petrova and Zvonareva.
I used to follow the Ladies Red army. I had a soft spot for all the ladies you mentioned. I loved Safina, but I always felt Petrova was the most talented of the bunch.
@@hajime2k I think all were talented but Dementieva was the most talented of all even with her worst serve, she still go deep consistently in most slams but was stopped by her more quality opponents. 2010 French Open semi finals against Schiavone was her last chance but sadly she couldn't take it :(
@@shngain100 I am still mind-boggled as to how Petrova, Dementieva, Safina were all talented playing on clay, yet couldn't win the French. Yet MYSKINA, a frequent flop on clay, got the French Open title.
@@hajime2k Henin was too good then. Safina just couldn't handle the pressure. Petrova has the serve and thundering groundstrokes to win both the FO and Wimbledon but never reached a slam final. She's not that tough mentally. Had Elena played till 2014/2015 I guess she would have won a slam.
whynot0224 I am suprised because deficits like that are not easy to comback from, just because you did it was once doesn't mean you are guaranteed to do it again.
Shane Terry well again remember the context, this was maria the quote unquote "cow on ice" era....she wasn't doing well on clay then and certainly wasn't comfortable grinding matches on her worst surface. dina loved the clay and wasn't beyond grinding matches.
Safina was number one and a three time grandslam finalist also she won some wta titles some double titles and had a nice career..she had a huge back problem that ended her career she did try a comeback did ok but the her both shoulders gave problems and she would run into players like serna venus and azarekia... at their.peeks and she was not better then them..but great player and fighter
Safina reminds me of Davenport, theyre similar being big boned..too bad she seems a good player, she, Jancovic, Zvenovera, Sabine Radwanska & Dementieva are those mid 2000s players who deserve at least 1 slam. Glad Caroline & Ivanovic got at least 1.
I wouldnt say domination, but major improvement and her adaptibility, i think Maria realized that the high bounce of the ball on clay can work to her height advantage well.
@@kookajoyonly Maria is way better than Rybakina and actually had formidable opposition - the Williams sisters (30 Slams combined), Henin (7), Hingis (5), Clijsters (4), Davenport (3), Mauresmo (2), Kuznetsova (2) and others later in her career such as Azarenka, Li, Kvitova, Kerber and Halep, all of whom are multiSlam winners. Rybakina beat freaking Jabeur to win her Slam. Lol.
Dementieva was definitely the more talented player. She had a overall better career and was a contender for ten seasons. Safina had two great years, 2008 and 2009 and other seasons where she was ok. Dementieva deserved a slam more, but Safina did as well.

you can never know what would happen until the last point. It's just one of such matches in tennis history. Anyway the winner earns and deserves it.

I had no idea Sharapova had a 5-2 lead in the second set. I am surprised Safina was able to comeback. Great Effort
Sharapova was also up 5-2 in 2nd set tie-break.
Why are you surprised? Safina did it two years earlier on the very same court in the very same round.

even she's lost this match, it's actually a sign of Sharapova's domination on clay. she play way better than before
domination on clay? lmao, 2 slams is not domination. It's great performance on clay. Rafa, Evert, Serena are examples of clay-court domination.
Losing is not = domination, tho.

nice of Maria to sign those poor fans balls at the end of the match, not 😑 not nice losing I know, but her fans were there for her either way.
