I have a Fujifilm XT-2 and a Nikon D610. I like the results and enjoy the smaller form factor of Fuji, as well as the retro look, feel and utility, and what-you-see-is-what-you-get (thru the viewfinder). My intent was to downsize/minimize with Fujifilm and ditch Nikon. Can't do it - the D610 offers a different physical shooting experience and results that I still very much enjoy - sometimes I just like a larger/more substantial tool in my hands. I like having a full-frame option at the ready, too.
Nikon D800 and D700. Now I want, need, covet...but can’t quite afford, a D850. They cost a small fortune down here in Australia. Love your images Julian.
Sounds like you have the best of both worlds! The WYSIWYG that you get with the Fuji certainley is a thing I would like to see eventually in a Nikon camera. Very useful for long exposures I've heard! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. :-)
Hey Keith, sorry if I've made your life a bit more difficult! :-) I've heard everything is more expensive down in Australia. Price you pay for living in paradise? The D850 was a stretch for me, even with a good D750 trade in value. :-)
Great video. I use a Canon 5D Mark IV and the feature my images get most benefit from would be the dynamic range. As a Canon user it's interesting to see some of the features of the Nikon - some small touches can make a difference, I like the easy way of covering the viewfinder. Nice images at the end, I liked the one with the sun rays best.
Hi from the Ottawa Valley, Canada. I have two D850s. Favourite feature is the auto-iso for 'run and gun' - able to lock the shutter speed to avoid motion blur and use a small enough aperture to keep some depth of field.
Focus Stacking is a great boon for me, if you want to keep the shutter speed up, to reduce foliage movement for instance, but dont want to increase your ISO, I shoot wide open, focus on the foreground and then select focus shift shooting. I will typically use 3,4 or 5 shot bracketing with a Focus Step width of say 4, you need to experiment with that one and press start. It will then move the focus point in each image, with just that one press. It is so easy to shoot wide open and get everything sharp from front to back
Cheers Steve, I eventually did a video on focus stacking with the D850 - ua-cam.com/video/wx014kIUNJw/v-deo.html I don't use it all the time, but it's good to know how to use it and when. 👍👍
Look at his camera. Moisture all over it. I love that these cameras are so well built you don’t really have to worry about it getting a little wet. I can’t wait to get my hands on my own D850!
For me, now a recent owner of a D850, I really appreciate your take on features you like. I recall your previous videos on the D850 and they gave me helpful insight. I have not tried the focus stacking yet, and would like your take on how you use it. Looking forward to using it someday when the composition would benefit. And I would like to see what you have to say about the time lapse feature as well. So far what I like the most is the dynamic range for the same reasons you covered. And I am impressed with the auto focusing, I photograph birds as well. I look forward to the time when many species return and hope to capture them in action, movements we cannot recognize with our human eye. I tried taking video but did poorly, I was not prepared when I had the opportunity which is my fault for not being prepared. I will correct that. I recognized all your images shown at the end from your previous videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Glen, always nice to see a comment from yourself. :-) I'll try and plan in a focus stacking and timelapse video at some point in the future then. And thanks for sticking around to watch the slideshow at the end :-)
I just stumbled across this video as I was looking for D850 related content, having just upgraded from a D800 to the D850. I agree with everything you have said. It is a fantastic camera and I am so glad I upgraded. Also, your images shown at the end of this video are superb. Subscribed and liked!
Thanks Martin, that's great to hear! The D800 was a superb camera, but I think you'll have noticed a bit of a jump going to the D850. It's an amazing camera isn't it?! Glad you liked my images and welcome to the channel! :-)
Julian...thanks for the video and sharing your favorite 8 things. I am waiting for my D850 to arrive next week and can't wait to give it a run through its paces. This will be my first FX camera and am so excited. I'm not a professional but am a lifelong hobbyist. I've got two FX lenses and two vintage manual only lenses...plus two DX lenses from my first Nikon which is a D5100...
Hi Terry, no wonder you are excited...getting a D850 as your first FX camera is awesome. I'm sure you'll love it The good thing is that you've got some FX glass to start of with. :-)
Great video, Julian. I've been loving my D850 for a good five months and no regrets. Fav feature is incredible dynamic range followed by all that resolution which can make it possible to grab a shot under pressure without having to quickly change a lens because there's enough resolution to crop. That resolution also makes it possible to set the camera up perfectly level when vertical lines matter, shoot at a wider angle, then simply crop afterwards without having to try to straighten everything in post-production. Love it.
Thanks Derek! Yeah, having all that dynamic range and pixels sure is handy. Not essential, but like I say in the video they can really make the process of capturing images easier. Thanks for watching! :-)
Hi Julian. Cracking video - I'm still dreaming about a D850 but I've got a D750 and absolutely love it. It's bomb-proof (and needs to be with me !!) and just keeps delivering, whether I'm up a freezing cold mountain or getting it covered in salt spray at the coast. Great slide show in the VLOG. That's a collection of images that any photographer would be proud of. Thanks for sharing Julian.
Thanks Tim! If I still had the D750, I'd still be happy with it. I look back on all the images I took with the D750 and I can't really say it every let me down. I let myself down a few times that's for sure! lol
Ya I'm in the same boat, also rocking the d750 and it delivers great results. I even compared it to the sony a7riii and could not see a reason to switch though Sony had great auto eyefocus
The D750 was and still is an amazing camera. Most of my best images were all captured with the D750. If the D850 hadn't come out I reckon I'd still be happy with it. :-)
I had the D810 and was very happy with it. I bought the D850 a couple of weeks after it was released and have now found my camera for life, meaning it will do everything I want it to to a standard that can produce large prints with fantastic resolution. The flippy out screen has been wonderful for my old knees, no longer requiring me to get into some complex yoga moves to look through the eyepiece. Don't get me wrong the D810 was a fantastic but Nikon has made one of the most rounded cameras ever made in the shape of the D850 for all the reasons you have said in this video . This one I will be living with for a very long time. Keep up the good work Julian :)
Hey Steve, great to hear how happy you are with the D850. I'd almost forgot about the tilting screen. Not because I don't find it useful (I use it a lot), but because I've had it on several other cameras, including the D750, that I forgot to mention it. I agree, I think the D850 will be with me for some years to come! :-)
PS I will be trespassing on your stomping ground, I'm taking a trip to Dawlish Warren tomorrow :). The forecast looks OK with a cross and off shore wind and 33% cloud, might be good, fingers crossed
Fingers crossed for you Steve! My previous video, Shoot, Print, Surprise! was shot at Dawlish Warren in case you missed it: ua-cam.com/video/6X_vK5lts5c/v-deo.html
Thanks Julian, that video inspired me to take the short drive from Plymouth to Dawlish. I haven't been there in years, I had forgotten all about it, I've been spending most of my time in the far west of Cornwall.
I've had the D850 since November and found it to be a superb camera, I use the 24-70 2.8 ED VR lens and the 70- 200 2.8 FL ED VR lens and I find it important to have good glass to complement the D850. In low light conditions, the D850 performs superbly and as you commented on the weatherproofing of the camera, it gives you confidence that in poor conditions it won't let you down. I look forward to seeing what you are up to next, keep up the good work.
Hi Glyn, thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. As you say good glass is critical. Did you see my previous video Print, Shoot, Surprise! ? It builds on the premise that good glass is important. Thanks for your continued support! :-)
Hi Julian, I did see your video print, shoot, surprise!? And I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm hoping that one day we could meet up and living in Somerset I'm not too far away. Unfortunately I will miss you at the photography show as I am going up on the final day. All the best.
I bought a D500 a couple years ago for shooting sports and wildlife. I definitely want to get a D850 next. But I first need to round out my arsenal of lenses. Right now, I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.8, a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 and a Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6. My next couple of lenses to get are a wide-angle, a 24-70mm and an 85mm prime. Then it will be time for the D850.
Man Nikon really went all out and hit the nail on the spot with the D850. I’ve had my Mark IV for about a year and half now and though I’m waiting to see what Canon does in the next year or two. The D850 is definitely lustful. Thanks for sharing buddy.
Hey Diego, there's always a camera to lust after isn't there? :-) But yes, as far as DSLRs go Nikon really have given Canon something to think about. :-)
Blimey; has 6 months already passed since getting your D850!!! A bit surprised you didn't mention the articulated screen, but then again you had that on your D750. Oh, almost forgot, some great images in the slideshow. :-) Looking forward to your next one, which will hopefully include focusing stacking.
Hey Paul, excatly, I'd been using an articulated screen on my D750 for 3 years, and most of other cameras all have one so it wasn't really new or improved. I use it so much that I forgot it was a thing! :-) I'll try and get a focus stacking video done soon as I can as it seems to be a popular request. :-)
Great Vid. I upgraded from a D200 and wow, I'm having to learn all over again. Thankfully the D200 gave me the grounding to understand the "basics" but the D850 is an awesome camera and it's going to take me a while yet to go through its many features. And yes, my pictures are better. Keep up[ the good work.
Thanks Captain A! Coming from the D200 that is a big jump in technology! But as you say, having a solid grounding in the basics is the key bit to getting good photos (just watch my previous vidoe Shoot, Print, Surprise). As I said in the video, all those features generally mak the process of getting a good image easier. They don't actually create a good image for me. :-)
Thanks, just watched this again, as you say the eye and imagination comes from the photographer but the D850 is a great tool to bring them to life! :-)
Thanks Ian, completely agree. If you haven't already watched this other video of mine, you should check this one out: ua-cam.com/video/6X_vK5lts5c/v-deo.html It's on a similar theme to the relationship between gear and composition.
Enjoyed the video especially your sections on the slit screen focusing and focus peaking. I am not a fan of borders on images but I greatly enjoyed your photos. A big thank-you for picking appropriate background music in a video.
Thanks Mr Lek! I really appreciate you watching and for taking the time to leave a comment. That's the first time I've used white borders when displaying images lol :-) Glad you liked the music. :-)
Thanks and great to hear you've found my review as one of the better ones. 👍 I did think this was an excellent written review: photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-z7 😀
Great to hear your thoughts now you’ve had the camera for 6 months Julian. You keep tempting me with these videos on the features of the D850, and I keep resisting...for now! 😊 I think it’s interesting to learn how the D850 has not necessarily changed the images you capture but how it’s impact how you capture them. Thanks for sharing mate!
Hi Andrew, You are so right, the D850 will enhance how you take your photographs, but at the end of the day it is a steep learning curve to be where you are now. It is a great tool, but that is all it is, the basics are down to the photographer. Ron
Cheers Andrew.... I will continue to make D850 videos until you buy one! lol But yes, the features help me make the photos but if my composition is rubbish or I have bad light, all those bells and whistles won't make a bit of difference! :-)
Very comprehensive mate. I shoot with a Canon 6D. It's full frame and had the highest dynamic range of any Canon camera at the time when I bought it. The only thing I wish it had is a articulated screen for when I'm working low to the ground.
It is so easy to shoot wide open and get everything sharp from front to back
My camera is a sony A6000 and I've outgrown it, but my favorite feature is simply its size and weight. As someone who does a lot of hiking despite being older and out-of-shape, that is really important to me.
Hey Theresa, I don't really consider the D850 to be very heavy...it's the lenses, tripod (x2) and all the vlogging gear that weigh me down! If all I did was head out with the D850 and my 16-35mm f/4, I'd be floating between locations! lol Perhaps you thought about the new Sony A7 III?
Great video and images! I’ve rented the D850 a few times now and it’s truly amazing! I still use a D4s but after using the D850 it’d be tempting to sell the D4s and get the 850. I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and seeing some of your favorite photos as well... thanks so much!
I’ve been hankering for this camera for ages, so watching this was a mistake, nevertheless it was interesting to hear your thoughts Julian, thank you. I moved to Fuji (XT1) a few years ago,but for me, it was a mistake as I just found it too small and fiddly to handle. I made the jump back to Nikon (D810) late last year and love it. Yes, it’s obviously a lot more weight to carry around but that’s a small price to pay for bringing the joy back into my photography. Hard to pick one favourite feature really, but I guess it would be dynamic range.
Hey Trevor. I've only heard of one of other person switching back to Nikon from a smaller camera like a Fuji. The D810 still is an amazing camera, but I apologise for making you want a D850! :-) I traded in my D750 to WEX to help pay for the D850...if that helps.
Thumbs up for your way of presentation. Clear language and competent at the same time. Happy to follow your channel. I myself own a Fuji X Pro2. Started as a hobby I am now getting first little jobs (mainly portraits) and thinking about switching to FF, but at the moment my clients are happy with the results. Let's see what time brings.
Thanks for watching and for your nice comments. I try not to do to much gear talk and generally focus on going out and taking landscape photos, so no matter what camera you have hopefully there will be something on this channel for you. I've only ever heard good things about the X Pro 2!!
Thanks for your kind reply. You are so right. It's not only the gear. I just came home from a shooting with a friend, and having a decent glass on - and even more important - with a nice model with much energy and positivity - we were rewarded by a beautiful first spring day in Berlin with a wonderful blue (golden) hour light.
Really interesting info Julian, thanks. I've been considering changing up to the 850 from the 750, and you might have just convinced me! I'm surprised more models don't have the built-in viewfinder cover. I think my old F5 had that feature. Actually, the feature that caught my eye to think about upgrading originally, was the megapixels combined with the ability to convert 35mm transparencies with the special adaptor which I believe is only available for the 850. Cheers!
very nice blog Julian love the 850 but its out of my price range although i do have a 750 and 500 both of which are excellent cameras. Love the images at the end
Great features you discussed Julian on the D850 and I agree with you. I have also been putting my D850 through its paces and love the results I'm getting. I use Focus Shift (focus stacking) shooting on some of my landscapes and get great results. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your results using the Focus Shift feature. But I also love the dynamic range of this camera, I do use ETTR technique but in some cases its not necessary. I'm still in the testing phase with the D850, but so far no complaints 😊
Thanks Richard. With spring just around the corner I'll be taking some photos of the cliff flowers (thrift) along the coastline which should be a great test for focus stacking. So hopefully I'll get a video done soon. :-)
"all sorts of conditions"?? you're in rainy Britain, of course you love weather sealing!! agreed the dynamic range is the #1 reason to own one. i waited a couple years and found one with a couple minor nicks for $1800!!
Tell you what Nair, I need that weather sealing at the moment with the storms we are having! (Well, they are bad storms for the UK that is). You've got yourself a stellar camera for $1800 😀👍
Thanks Thomas. Nothing wrong with a F2a...if you can still capture great images with it then it's still worth using. However, the D850 is a different beast so I'm sure you'll love evrything it brings. :-)
Great tutorial Julian I enjoyed your appraisal of the stunning D850 despite being a Canon shooter(please don't un-subscribe and block me). But I was reminded of your previous video 'shoot, print, surprise' in which you got absolutely stunning prints from your 2006 Nikon D80. Having the very latest camera really is an expensive luxury for most people don't you think.
Thanks Andy, don't worry I bet half the people that have watched this are Canon shooters! I even have a friend who is a Canon shooter. :-) For me, I really had to push the boat out for the D850, but over the years I've been working my way up, trading in as I go. :-)
I'm not a Nikon user but those images where stunning when viewed as a collection! For me, I can certainly see the value of all those extra pixels too. My 1dx is quickly becoming a bit of a dinosaur it seems! The fast frame rate is most certainly the favourite feature when I am shooting wildlife.
Julian Baird - Landscape Photography Thanks Julian. I was hesitating between Sony A7RIII or the Nikon D850! After all the reviews and after I saw the price of the lenses I choose The D850! I already have 2 Nikon lenses so the choice is evident! Love your stuff
Very informative vlog Julian and great images loved the one of the cobb, if that’s where it was? I have D7200 and need to get out more. A vlog on timelapse would be great. Thank you.
Thanks Michael, yes it is The Cobb...and if you want to watch a video of me creating that image just have a look on my channel...I think it was published 2 videos ago, so it should be near the top...in fact it's here: ua-cam.com/video/HuXNGmwhtr8/v-deo.html
Focus stacking and Timelapse are from the features that encourages me to buy the D850 , a video about these 2 features will be appreciated... thank You 🙏🏼
@@jbairdexp Yes sir, there are. However, the weather where I live has been dismal, so as of this writing on 12/27, I have yet to use my new D850. I do hope to in the VERY near future.
You can display a histogram in Live View? Oh that’s nice! A feature surely missing on my D810. I’d also enjoy the new rear monitor for work low to the ground.
Only one thing I want now is all that information from live view displayed in a EVF....so I'm very much looking forward to the Z version of the D850. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. :-)
Julian Baird - Landscape Photography well in theory I don't need the d500 as I could use dx mode on the d850 but it's useful as a backup. This is a 100% crop from my d500. instagram.com/p/BgGzm58j_3c/
Hi Nigel, Let me say from the outset the D850 is awesome. Mine is 2 months old and now for sale. Why.. because it made me lazy with the live view autofocus, and focus on screen, never trusting it and wasting time on the split screens checking it. The pull out screen is a luxury that I never used. My camera of choice Nikon D3x, after selling mine I was lucky enough to get another as new. Good old fashioned manual focus suits me better so I can concentrate more on the image and less on the features, and 25 Mp is enough for me. Features vs Benefits :-))) Don't let me put you off buying a D850 it is awesome. Ron
Hey Ron, you're right it is awesome and I'd miss all those things if I didn't have them. Still, it wouldn't stop me getting good photographs...did you watch my previous video Shoot, Print, Surprise? :-)
Yes it was interesting with the D80, and the single digit D series has had the viewfinder blind for ages. Don't let the D850 make you lazy and forget the basics. Ron
Thanks! Glad you learnt something new. That is why I watch other peoples videos on cameras and post processing.... you never know what you might learn! :-)
I learnt to remap the front FN button to "back button focus", because on my d7100, the ae/AF lock button is too close to the viewfinder, making it an awkward reach.
Hi Julian, great video, I've just subscribed to you channel. I found this video after looking at D850 videos as I have a D750 and I'm not sure if I just want or need the D850. You've shown some good reasons in this video one of one of my big reasons is like you I always forget to cover the eyepiece when doing long exposure. I also have an Olympus E-M1 MKII and I use loads of the features you mentioned like touch screen and focus peaking etc Did you notice a great difference to the D750, I know you said the dynamic range which is a great help but are there enough to make it a need. But new camera day don't come that often and everybody needs a treat now and again Thanks Billy
Thanks Billy, and I really appreciate you subscribing :-) Great to hear you've found the video useful. I'm not sure if the change in dynamic range was "great"...it was definately noticable though. I found there was a lot more data in the shadows so recovery seemed to be easier....but is the difference big enough to justify the upgrade? Well, that's hard to say. Just dynamic range...well, maye, but as a whole package, for me at least, the D850 was worth upgrading from the D750. Not sure if that was any help? lol
I am Canon shooter, 1DX, but recently bought Fuji XT-20, it amazed me how the evolution in technology making fast progress , crazy the price versus futures.....hmmm
Think I’m going to go full frame later this year! Very jealous of you pixel monster lol, great video bud. That brentor image isn’t the one you got the other weekend was it?
Well if you don't want to bust the bank, you'll probably pick up a new D750 for a decent price, or even a used D810. No, that image of Brentor was from back in October. :-)
If you are too poor for this latest wonder, don't despair. There was a D850 at my portrait class recently and, yes, I felt rather jealous. However - I was using a £550 12MP D700, and I got the best pictures. LOL. Consider the words of Lance Armstrong before mortgaging your house.
Excellent video. My favorite feature of the D850 is hard to choose. There are several that I like. IS064. Focus tracking. But I think I'll go with your favorite also. Dynamic range. The details I get ouf of shots, especially over/under exposed ones. I do have to ask though, why did you get rid of your D850?
Thanks for watching. Coming from the D750 there was a definite jump in dynamic range with the D850. I sold the D850 to get into the Z system, and if you want to know why, this video of mine sums it up - ua-cam.com/video/csrV12tyUH8/v-deo.html :-)
@@jbairdexp thank you so much for replying. I jumped from the D7200, so you can understand my enthusiasm for the D850. I don't know if I'll ever go mirrorless. But if I did, it would be the Z system. Also, I don't want to have to invest more money. All my lenses are full frame. I don't believe in getting adapters for lenses, so the option of using my F mount with an adapter is out of the question. In the end, the D850 exceeds all my needs. It's a beast of a camera in my opinion. Thank you again so much for replying. It made my day.
Hi Julian, not sure if you remember me but I was out on the photography trip to Dorset with Ross in November. Just watched this video and now I am itching for a D850! I would be really interested in a timelapse video :)
Hi Evie, yes, I think I remember you. I think I spoke to you down at the beach at Kimmeridge? I think you were studying a marine or bio-science in Cornwall? Anyway, I take no responsbility if you spend all your money on a D850! lol I see you have some content on your channel. I'll check it out later!
Yes you did! I am studying Marine and Natural History Photography :) Hahaha, I so desparetly want one! Yes, I have just started vlogging. I would love to collab one day.
Thanks again for making this video & giving your favorite things about Nikon D850 & would love to see a review on time lapse shooting & shooting video i also was wondering what's yours favorite lens to shoot with your Nikon D850
I think my favourite lens has always been (even before I had the D850) is the Nikkor 16-35 mm f/4. It's an older lens, but for landscape photography it's a great choice. The 24-70 mm f/2.8 VR is also a great choice. (though a little expensive). Thanks for watching. 😀😀👍
Thanks for that Julian. I got my camera for a trip to Iceland in October. I love it. I always enjoy your videos. Heading over to the Lake District and Skye next week from Canada with my d850. Hoping the weather calms down. Cheers Mark. @walkacrossitall
Nice review, I have been using the D850 for two months now (upgraded from the D3200) and have used focus stacking (unsuccessfully) and time-lapse mode (for star trails). Any tips you have for processing shots easily (i do not find LRTimelapse easy to use) please try and produce a video to advise us of it. Many thanks
Hi Ross, congrats on your upgrade to the D850. 👍 I don't actually use my D850 for captring timelapses so I'm afraid I can't offer any specific advice on that topic.
I didn't have enough for the D850 but I do have a D500 on the way. I would LOVE to see a Focus stacking video. For landscapes I would have thought it would have been something you used often. I would very much like to see what you think if you took a focus-stacked landscape photo...
Cheers Simon, the D500 is an awesome camera. I've heard it called a DX version of the D5...so you are sure to be happy with it! I definately will look at the focus stacking in the future. I'm a bit of a "lazy" post processor, so I guess I've always tried to as much as possible in camera. But with these great features I might be a bit fool for not trying it properly! :-)
From what I've seen and read, photoshop can do all the blending for you. It looks very easy (famous last words right? hehehe). When I get a D850 it will be one of the very first things I try :)
Nothing that was said in this video is new to me. It's fantastic camera. No doubt. I am Nikon D750 user and I'm thinking of switching to either D850 or changing system to Sony Mirrorless. Sony is very tempting with their new A7 III and A7R III. As much as I love Nikon cameras Sony brings few features to the table I can't really stop thinking about. Should I go for Sony A7 series or Nikon D850?
Hi, unfortunately that is a question only you can answer! There are features on other cameras that I would like on my D850, but still for me the overall package of the D850 is the best fit. :-)
My 9 lens collection will probably make me stick with Nikon. Nevertheless, there are pros and cons in every system. Hopefully, we'll see mirrorless edition of D850 from Nikon. P.S. Beautiful images Julian.
Though I only have 3 Nikon lenses, that was enough for me to stick with a Nikon DSLR. The cost of replacing those lenses like for like with Sony equivalents was too much compared with the additional features I might get. And yes, a mirrorless version of the D850 would be most welcome. Great to hear you like the images as well! :-)
Thanks Robin. It's a Manfrotto, model MT055XPRO3. :-) If you are interested I'll be publishing a video on the D850's Focus Shift feature really soon, so stay tuned! :-)
Thanks for standing in the rain for us viewers, I am currently waiting for my D850 to be available so this heads up reviewing is excellent. I only have 2 questions Julian, what lavier mic do you use and I noticed the audio switched temporarily during your video? What happened :-)
Hi Carky Media! If you liked this D850 video, make sure you check out my D850 playlist (ua-cam.com/play/PLJU6FMi6Tvo8FhKU2jUnA8T7ZaF4JIUFy.html). The lav mic I use is the Rode LavMic+ with a Zoom H1 recorder (all the links are in the video description). As for the audio change, well, to say that I had "switched" audio would be kind. To be honest, it looks like I had forgot to press record on my Zoom H1, so I had to use the audio from the camera (Sony RX100M4). I normally check audio for every take, but for some reason I screwed up for that scene. :-)
Julian Baird - Landscape Photography I have just purchased a Tascam DR-10L voice recorder, highly recommend them. 1x AAA Bty is all you need. I'm not advertising, I just found it extremely versatile.
Nothing really to convince me to move from my D810 for landscapes. You mention that it is 42mpix but it is actually 46mpix. The only reason I would think of updating would be the articulating screen - surprised you didn't find that one of the features that had helped?
Hi Dave, thanks for correction. After 40MP, whats a few pixels between photographers! lol The reason I didn't mention the articulated screen is that I've had one for so long (3 years with the D750, plus a few other cameras) that having one of the D850 hasn't really changed things for me. :-)
Thanks Julian - Sorry - I had wrongly assumed you had moved from a D810. I took a long hard look at the D850 but it just is not worth the extra money over my D810 for Landscapes. If I needed video and / or a single camera to cover wildlife and landscapes then I would have got one without hesitation. I would still like the articulating screen though!
No worries Dave. If I had a D810 I definately would have to have given it a lot more thought to see if it was worth the upgrade. It was an easier decision coming from a 3 year old D750. The flippy out screen was a significant benifit to me as a landscape photographer when I got it with the D750. It's like a lot of these small features and things they introduce into cameras...you think you don't need them, but when you get them you wondered how you'd do with out them. :-)
Since you seem to be geotagging the photos via SnapBridge, can you say something about the increased battery usage? I was until now reluctant to have the camera connected to the phone all the time but I do miss the feature.
Hi Raphael, can't say I've noticed any difference in battery performance from my D750. The camera uses a low power bluetooth connection so it should really impact the battery anyway. :-)
Hi Peter, thanks. I've definately noticed more detail in the shadow areas, but can't say I've noticed anything specific in the highlights. That's not to say there isn't, but it's maybe just the way I work in post processing. :-)
Hi Julian. I congratulate you for the awesome videos you make. Currently I have a D5200 which I feel I have outgrown. Considering the D750 at the moment but I am unsure whether to wait for the upgrade or not. I have a small question for you: do you notice any difference in the details captured by the D850 vs D750 considering that the D850 does not have an anti-aliasing filter? Thanks and keep the videos coming.
Hey Andrea, can't say I noticed a huge difference with a removal of the AA filter. Definately an improvement in dynamic range though. Saying that though, the D750 is hardly a poor camera in that area. You won't be dissapointed with one. :-) Glad you like my videos. :-)
Thanks for the feedback Julian. I need to decide before my trip to Cornwall in May :-) Cornwall really seems a beautiful location and really looking forward to spending some time among nature and maybe take some nice images.
Thank you for sharing your videos. I have recently upgraded to the 850 from the 610. I was so excited but am actually having trouble adjusting. I dont think my pictures seem quite as crisp as my old ones which doesnt make sense. I also seem to be having over exposed pictures often which is not usual for me. Any suggestions on what could be going on?
Thank you for watching and congrats on your purchase. In terms of the over exposure, first thing to check is your histogram when you are shooting. If that looks right, but the image comes out over exposed, just double check you haven't switched on exposure compensation, and make sure you've got Active-D lighting switched off. Also, shoot in raw with a flat profile, and see what the image looks like. :-)
Ah I see what you mean. I did do a similar video to the D850 with Z7 but it wasn't a direct comparison. Would be interested to see someone else point of view though. :-)
Check out my Winter Solstice, Long Lens Challenge, and Bad WEather Photography videos as they all have shots in them with 10 stop NDs at ISO 64. You can see the images for each video on my blog as well.
I own a D750 and shoot stills and video. I just can't decide whether I should add this camera or the new A73 - video is becoming more important to me. If the touch screen AF in video is reliable it maybe the camera I choose.
Hey Mark, that is a tough choice. Obviously you already have Nikon lenses so for me that would be a big factor in my decision. I've not had any problems with the touch screen AF but I'm not sure how it compares to the Sony.
What camera do you have and what is your favourite feature?
Some great work , I shoot with the d810 and d500 . I did not realize you could access focus peaking in stills. That is so nice .
Hey Troy, that's a great camera setup you have there. Do you get focusing peaking on the D500?
I wish all UA-cam videos for cameras were like this one. Factual, helpful and straight to the point.
No unnecessary comedy at all.
Thanks Meshack, glad you liked the approach. 😀
Hi from the Ottawa Valley, Canada. I have two D850s. Favourite feature is the auto-iso for 'run and gun' - able to lock the shutter speed to avoid motion blur and use a small enough aperture to keep some depth of field.
Hi Hamish! Wow, two D850s. One for each hand? lol I sometimes shoot concerts so have use the auto-iso feature as well...very useful!
Hi Andrew, hope you get your D850. I've never worried about d850 being out in the wet. Which is just as well as it gets wet a lot! :-)
I just bought this camera, an upgrade from my Nikon D5300, which has served me well.
That's a great upgrade and I'm sure you'll love the D850 like I do. 👍😀
Always impressed by your presentations Julian, thanks for the insight into the D850.
Thanks Andy, that is very kind of you to say. :-)
Greta Video Julian. You present it really well. Thank you :)
Thank you, most kind of you to say. :-)
Thanks. My 850 arrives on Wednesday. Can’t wait.
Great to hear, your going to love it. Probably the best DSLR out there. 👍
That's a tasty set of lenses you'll have! :-)
Just received D850 and still getting some of the accessories. So far, I'm very happy but only scratching the surface of its capabilities.
Nice one Bob. Even after 6 months I'm still learning what it can do. It's fun though! :-)
Excellent vid and great choice in shots at the end. May pick your brains on settings as am a new 850 owner
Thanks very much. I've moved on to the Nikon Z system, but I'll try my best with any D850 questions.
You are several generations removed from the D200. Congratulations on your purchase. I just bought one myself in December 2019.
Very good explanation....tq d850 is very interesting spec..... Anand
Thanks, it's a great camera for sure. 👍
You never said you are a movie star! Excellent presentation style Julian. I need to upgrade my job so I can get a D850 😉
Thanks mate! :-)
Cracking as always mate :) loved the selection of images especially the light over the Lake District
Cheers David! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Glad you liked the Lake District image. :-)
great video, unfortunately i cant find any good reviews online, only a few, your is one of the best
Hi Andrew,
You are so right, the D850 will enhance how you take your photographs, but at the end of the day it is a steep learning curve to be where you are now.
One of the best camera and I bought my D850 on 9-September-18. Really privileged to have one 👍👌
Well I hope you have lots of fun with it and you manage to capture some great images :-)
Undoubtedly it is the best DSLR ever made.
Can't say I disagree! :-)
Yes please do a photo stacking video with the Nikon D850.
Thanks for watching - here's the video on focus stacking....ua-cam.com/video/wx014kIUNJw/v-deo.html 👍
Great job mate!!! I'll be using my d-850 this Friday for a wedding shoot...This will be my 1st wedding....Cheers mate!!
Awesome, good luck with the shoot! :-)
Wow. Do love the castle on the hill shot. Thank you.
Thanks Alex! It's Brentor Church on Dartmoor if you ever fancy visiting. :-)
thanks Julian, for sharing.
Thanks for watching! :-)
I will upgrading from my Fuji xt2 to the d850, cant wait to get my hands on it.
As you can tell, I'm very happy with my D850, and I'm sure you will be too :-)
Very comprehensive mate. I shoot with a Canon 6D. It's full frame and had the highest dynamic range of any Canon camera at the time when I bought it. The only thing I wish it had is a articulated screen for when I'm working low to the ground.
Cheers mate, yeah the titlting screen is very useful. I forgot to mention it in the video because I was so used to using one from the D750. :-)
I just got a d850 and love that I can have different profiles for photography and video.
It's a great feature isn't it. Hope you enjoy your D850! 👍
Focus stacking is something I would be interested in seeing you use on the 850. Great video here.
Thanks Janet. I'll get a focus stacking video done in the near future then. :-)
It is so easy to shoot wide open and get everything sharp from front to back
Thanks Julian for a great video! I didn't know about the split screen focusing - keen to give this a try.
Thanks for watching Kanika! :-)
Yes, I am planning on getting an A7iii sometime later this year (hopefully). I want the high ISO performance and improved dynamic range.
Thanks Brad. That's a tough choice between the D4s and a D850....good luck! And thanks for watching :-)
Nice work mate!
thanks Tim!
Exactly. You should check out my previous video Shoot, Print, Surprise! It should be a good example of using good glass with great light. :-)
Just stumbled upon your channel Julian. Keep up the amazing work! Looking forward to seeing more videos from you :)
Thanks so much! :-)
I was on the fence between this and 5dmk4/sony a7r3 but this is just an all round beast, thanks for the review
Thanks for watching JR and glad the review has helped a little bit with your decision making :-)
Cheers!
Hey Simon, I take no responsibility for the reduction in your bank balance! lol The 35mm adaptor has just been released I believe. :-)
very nice blog Julian love the 850 but its out of my price range although i do have a 750 and 500 both of which are excellent cameras. Love the images at the end
Hey Andy, that's rather a good camera setup you have there! Great to hear you liked the images. :-)
You've got yourself a stellar camera for $1800 😀👍
Beautiful photos at the end there. I am thinking of getting the 850. Don't laugh, I'm still using a Nikon f2a film camera.
Thanks Thomas. Nothing wrong with a F2a...if you can still capture great images with it then it's still worth using. However, the D850 is a different beast so I'm sure you'll love evrything it brings. :-)
Great video Julian
Thanks Paul!
Re. even have a friend LOL!!!!
Lol, we all have "one of those friends"! :-)
Well done, and your images are fantastic. Thanks for this.
Thanks and no worries! :-)
Absolutely interested in video about focus stacking and time lapse. Both are features that are tempting me to upgrade my 810
It seems to be a popular feature for a video so I'll get one done soon. :-)
Outstanding
Thank you!
Cheers Simon. Camera's become dinosours very quickly though...but in the right hands they will always produce great images. :-)
Can't wait to get mine in 2 long weeks
Hope it arrives a little sooner! You'll love it. :-)
Julian Baird - Landscape Photography Thanks Julian. I was hesitating between Sony A7RIII or the Nikon D850! After all the reviews and after I saw the price of the lenses I choose The D850! I already have 2 Nikon lenses so the choice is evident! Love your stuff
Same for me. I had all Nikon lenses so the choice of sticking with the D850 made more sense. Thanks for watching :-)
Focus stacking and Timelapse are from the features that encourages me to buy the D850 , a video about these 2 features will be appreciated... thank You 🙏🏼
Hey Janabi, thanks for watching. You can see my focus stacking video here: ua-cam.com/video/wx014kIUNJw/v-deo.html
Hello Julian, I hope after 6 mos. with my new D850 I can rave about my favorite features as eloquently as you have here.
Thanks Paul, I'm sure after just 6 days you'll be raving about everything you like about the D850. There's a lot to rave about afterall!
@@jbairdexp Yes sir, there are. However, the weather where I live has been dismal, so as of this writing on 12/27, I have yet to use my new D850. I do hope to in the VERY near future.
Sounds like the weather I had when I first got my D850...I was desperate to get out with the camera but the weather was rubbish for nearly two weeks!😜
Another great video Julian. Can I ask if you use the "Silent Mode" when you're shooting landscapes at all?
Thanks Mike. Yes, sure you can ask...but the answer is no. The camera is rarely out of MUP. :-)
Thanks Julian.
Great video and same camera as me now. Upgraded from the d500. Although still kept the d500. 😂
Great! A D500 and a D850.. the perfect camera combination?
Julian Baird - Landscape Photography well in theory I don't need the d500 as I could use dx mode on the d850 but it's useful as a backup. This is a 100% crop from my d500. instagram.com/p/BgGzm58j_3c/
True, but as you say, nice to have a backup body! :-)
Hi Nigel,
Let me say from the outset the D850 is awesome.
Features vs Benefits :-)))
Don't let me put you off buying a D850 it is awesome.
Ron
OK Julian... honest mistake... did you not find it funny :-0
Hey Ron, sorry, I must have missed your original comment! I wasn't ignoring you! :-)
Ron
Great video! Thanks. I didn't know about the split screen focus or GPS tagging
Cool, I've yet to find a useful function to assign to the FN button :-)
Hi Julian, great video, I've just subscribed to you channel. I found this video after looking at D850 videos as I have a D750 and I'm not sure if I just want or need the D850. You've shown some good reasons in this video one of one of my big reasons is like you I always forget to cover the eyepiece when doing long exposure. I also have an Olympus E-M1 MKII and I use loads of the features you mentioned like touch screen and focus peaking etc
Did you notice a great difference to the D750, I know you said the dynamic range which is a great help but are there enough to make it a need.
But new camera day don't come that often and everybody needs a treat now and again
Thanks Billy
Thanks Billy, and I really appreciate you subscribing :-) Great to hear you've found the video useful. I'm not sure if the change in dynamic range was "great"...it was definately noticable though. I found there was a lot more data in the shadows so recovery seemed to be easier....but is the difference big enough to justify the upgrade? Well, that's hard to say. Just dynamic range...well, maye, but as a whole package, for me at least, the D850 was worth upgrading from the D750. Not sure if that was any help? lol
D750 which I have been very satisfied with until watching this video. Thanks Julian??? ;-)
I accept no responsibility for any reduction in your bank balance Chris! :-)
Very cool, on my latest camera what I love it has to be touch screen, dynamic range and 4K....lovely machine is that Nikon, cheers
Cheers Verdon. What are you shooting with again?
I am Canon shooter, 1DX, but recently bought Fuji XT-20, it amazed me how the evolution in technology making fast progress , crazy the price versus futures.....hmmm
A great video Julian and I’d love you to do a video on Focus stacking and editing the shot in Photoshop please. Thank you my friend.
Cheers Tony, I'll do something on focus stacking (including post processing) sometime in the future then. :-)
You have a valid point and I believe I may have demonstrated it in this video of mine: ua-cam.com/video/6X_vK5lts5c/v-deo.html
Just viewed it - excellent images from the Surprise Camera. (it's cheaper than the D700!) :-)
Hi, I had an eye piece cover on my Canon T90 in about 1985, and my Sony HX90V point and shoot has gps tagging built in.
Thanks Glen, I've also got a Sony camer that GPS tag my images, as does my phone. Just glad it's finally made it to my DSLR :-)
Fantastic content. Really enjoyed it 👍
Thanks Neil! 😀👍
Yep, it does... never mind ~ just keep producing good videos
Will do and thanks for your support! 👍
@@minkymott If the D850 exceeds your needs then it's the perfect camera for you! The D850 is probably still the world's best DSLR. :-) Happy shooting!
Great work thank you ..i bought one
Thanks! And have fun with the D850 :-)
Cool! Yeah, let's meet up in the future. Maybe you'll have a D850 also?! ;-)
Nikon D850 - Sigma 24-105mm f4 DG OS HSM Art Recommended
Yep, those Sigma lenses get very good reviews.
Thanks for that Julian. I got my camera for a trip to Iceland in October. I love it. I always enjoy your videos. Heading over to the
Lake District and Skye next week from Canada with my d850. Hoping the weather calms down. Cheers Mark. @walkacrossitall
Thanks Mark, I really appreciate your continued support. Sounds like you've also been putting the D850 through its paces, and will be again soon! :-)
Yes, you are absolutely right. I've seen a few videos on it and it certainley looks relatively straight forward in PS. :-)
Great points highlighted.. Just wanted to ask you which tripod are you using in the video.
Probably still won't be able to remind me if I haven't pressed the record button though! lol
Very helpful! Thank you!!
Thank you for watching! :-)
Nikon D 850 is the 1st camera with quality dynamic range what I need is how to use it with full benefits
Thanks
Thanks for watching Safeer! I'm always sharing my photography tips so stay tuned. :-)
It was good if you could get a chance to elaborate more about dynamic range
Thanks
Hi Safeer, thanks for watching. What would you like to know about dynamic range and the D850?
Nice one Julian.....itis a super camera even tho I use a canon 👍
Cheers Steven! :-) Will be really interesting if Canon release a much rumoured full frame mirrorless camera this year.... :-)
Great video Julian thank you - just wondering if you noticed any significant improvement or extra latitude in highlight control when doing ETTR cheers
What ever you buy you'll love Cornwall. It's such a great place to photograph. :-)
Cheers Julian :)
you should do an updated video on the D850
Not sure what else I could say about this excellent DSLR. 😀
@@jbairdexp compared to the z7. but okay okay, ill do a video on it in september.
Ah I see what you mean. I did do a similar video to the D850 with Z7 but it wasn't a direct comparison. Would be interested to see someone else point of view though. :-)
I'd love to see the ISO performance when shooting long exposures with a 10 Stop ND
